Most Dutch speakers of English think their English vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation are the bee's knees.quote:Op zondag 3 januari 2016 00:04 schreef RickoKun het volgende:

True that. Those Yankees and British are right. However, to my own experience, the Dutch often brag to themselves that they can speak english fluently; but I do not often hear this in practice.quote:Op zondag 3 januari 2016 00:13 schreef motorbloempje het volgende:

All they hear from Brits/Yanks is admiration, that 'it's so remarkable how good your English is'... Well, that 'compliment' isn't worth that much for two reasons.. 1. Politeness, especially from the Brits. Just politeness. 2. The average Brit, let alone American, doesn't speak anything other than English and finds someone able to make themselves understood in another language 'remarkable'
I'm actually more amazed at German people speaking Dutch and they typically do a better job at that. But lets be honest, usually the people who's mother tongue is a bigger language and who learned one of the smaller ones, often are more motivated to do so (they chose to learn it) while the other way around you kinda have to.quote:Op zondag 3 januari 2016 00:28 schreef RickoKun het volgende:

When I attended international exchange courses, I was amazed how bad everyone was at speaking the english language to the foreign students. I did not expect this to happen at hbo level (no, not the channel).

I seriously doubt there's a single native speaker using this forum. So I suppose this is just a subforum where we're all gonna circle jerk and show off our English.
Can we have another one for Chinese?
Could you explain me what a circle jerk means please?quote:Op zondag 3 januari 2016 09:21 schreef SuperHarregarre het volgende:

There's a truckload of people with university degrees who can't do simple math, or have mastered their own language in a proper way. We can't expect those people to be able to understand Sponge bob without subs.quote:Op zondag 3 januari 2016 00:28 schreef RickoKun het volgende:
