Protests start ahead of Putin's UN speech on Sept. 28

Protests have already begun today in New York ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech on Sept. 28 at the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where President Petro Poroshenko will also speak.
Putin is expected to use his time to condemn Western sanctions against Russia for its annexation of Crimea and war against Ukraine, but analysts expect that Putin's focus will be promoting multilateral action against ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
Poroshenko, who is expected to speak ahead of Putin, will likely bring more attention to his call for the United Nations to cancel Russia's veto as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Putin, whose speech is expected to start about 7 p.m. Kyiv time, is also scheduled to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama later, about midnight Kyiv time.
The focus of the Obama-Putin talks is expected to be Syria, where Russia has long propped up the dictatorship of President Bashir al-Assad. But Ukraine will also likely be a topic, with Ukrainians hoping that Obama will stay firm on economic sanctions until Russia returns Crimea and ends the war in Ukraine's eatern Donbas.
A Stand Up To Putin at the UN rally got under way at 10 a.m. New York time on Sept. 27 and was expected to last two hours. A second one was scheduled to take place at 2:30 p.m. outside the Russian Mission to the United Nations, on East 67th Street and Lexington Avenue.
Another rally is expected to take place on Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. New York time at Dag Hammarskjld Plaza, East 47th Street & 1st Avenue, and last until Putin starts speaking.
Several groups are involved in organizing the protests, including the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America.
According to Porosheno's website, Ukrainian will "propose changes aimed to restore the historical mission of the UN Security Council as a mechanism to protect global security."
Speaking to journalists in New York, Poroshenko said: "After the annexation of Crimea and aggression in Donbas, when a permanent member of the UN Security Council blocks the actions and instruments of the Security Council, we must either increase the efficiency or build new security mechanisms."
He also will press for international unity and solidary with Ukraine.
"The annexation of Crimea, aggression in Donbas, sanctions against Russia and well-coordinated actions aimed to force Russia fulfill the Minsk agreements are the first priority of all our partners," Poroshenko said.
Poroshenko discounted as Russian propaganda allegations that Ukraine could become a bargaining chip in negotiations between the U.S. and Russia on the Syrian issue. "It is a part of Russian information war against Ukraine and the entire civilized world aimed to show that the world is allegedly tired of Ukraine," Poroshenko said, stressing his commitment to the Minsk peace agreements which, among other conditions, require Russia to withdraw troops and equipment from Ukraine, end support of separatists and allow Ukraine to resume control of its borders.
"We efficiently coordinate our actions to ensure the fulfillment of the Minsk agreements, prevention of fake elections that Russia plans to conduct in October and November and implementation of actions in response in case the elections are held. We must force Russia to return to the negotiating table and do everything to ensure immediate implementation of the Minsk agreements," Poroshenko said.

President at the 11th annual CGI meeting: Global security depends on the success of Ukraine

The Ukrainian President delivered a speech at the opening of the plenary session “Future of Impact” in the course of the 11th annual CGI meeting in New York. The Head of State noted that global security depended on successful resolution of the situation in Ukraine.
“Of course, I cannot accept that, but if Ukraine theoretically loses this war, global security will be destroyed. For sure. Thus, it is our joint action for peace and security in the world,” the President emphasized.
“After the annexation of Crimea and aggression in the east of Ukraine, we are living in an absolutely different world. Global security system doesn’t work anymore. The UN Security Council doesn’t work the way it should,” the President said. According to him, Ukraine urgently needs Transatlantic unity and solidarity. The President emphasized that Ukrainians were fighting not only for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country. “We are fighting for freedom and democracy of the whole world,” he said.
The President noted that Ukraine needed assistance in the enhancement of its defense. According to him, Ukraine needs not lethal weapons, but means of electronic warfare. “Ukraine is an outpost of global security and freedom. And these additional investments are the investments in freedom and security of Europe and the entire world,” Petro Poroshenko stated.
The President underlined the importance for Ukraine to remain the top priority for global democracy.
“Issues of Syria, ISIS, North Korea and other problems shouldn’t overshadow the priority of the Ukrainian issue, because these 45 million people want to be and will be the European nation with the highest democracy and freedom standards,” Petro Poroshenko said.
“I have a very strong bias that a strong, independent, peaceful, secure Ukraine being a bridge between Russia and Europe,” the 42nd President of the United States said inviting the Ukrainian President to deliver a speech.

Pensioenen zijn veel te laag, de salarissen liggen rond de 60 euro per maand, de Hryvna is gekelderd en het toerisme ligt stil (er is een negatief reisadvies voor grote delen van Oekrane en met al die nazi's in het westen en Kiev ben je als toerist je leven ook niet zeker).

Russian bridge to Crimea going up at lightning speed
Mainland Russia is one step closer to a direct link to Crimea. Workers are building temporary bridges that will carry construction machinery and deliver materials to the Kerch bridge site. Eventually there will be three bridges, one is already working.
The Crimean Peninsula’s only land border is with Ukraine, but currently regular passenger and cargo deliveries are organized by direct flights and ferries from ports in southern Russia.
The 19-kilometer long main bridge is expected to open in December 2018 and will connect Kerch in Crimea to mainland Russia and by-pass Ukraine.
“The construction material for the temporary bridge is more than 3,500 tons. Bridge support piles were sunk to a depth of 35 to 56 meters. This is the first span. Soon there will be two more such bridges,” said Leonid Ryzhenkin who oversees the building in an interview with Russian daily
October 1 also saw the beginning of the construction of a four-lane highway to link the new bridge with the Krasnodar region in the south of Russia. It will be 40 km long with five interchanges.
“A new road is designed for 120 km/h traffic. It will have a capacity of 36,000 cars a day,” said Dmitry Gorb who heads the construction.
The second auxiliary bridge across the Kerch Strait and a temporary railway will be built this winter, said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, RIA Novosti reports.
This September, the Ukrainian far-right tried to implement a trade blockade of the Crimean Peninsula, which is still dependant on goods delivered from Ukraine. The Kerch Strait Bridge aims to end Crimea's reliance on Ukraine.
