Betekenis van R.E.M. - Losing My Religion

Op een of andere manier word ik op het moment geïntrigeerd door "Losing my religion" van R.E.M.. De combinatie van tekst en muziek, gewoon geweldig, en dat terwijl het toch een nummer is van een tijd geleden.
Misschien een stomme vraag hierover... wat is de "betekenis" achter de tekst? Ik kan het wel letterlijk vertalen, maar wat "vertelt" het nummer?

But that was just a dream
