Police Officer Shot at Chattanooga, Tennessee, U.S. Naval Recruiting Building

A police officer was shot Wednesday at a Navy recruitment building in Chattanooga, Tennessee, NBC affiliate WRCB reported. It was not clear whether the gunman was on the loose.

The first calls came in after 11 a.m., and police responded to a shooting incident on Amnicola Highway, the station reported.

The U.S. Navy confirmed a shooting at one of its buildings, and said officials, including ATF special agents, are investigating at the scene.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke said there had been a "horrific" incident, but he had no immediate details.

Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga confirmed to NBC News that it was treating one person involved in a shooting.

Local facilities, including the nearby Chattanooga State Community College, remained on lockdown Thursday afternoon.

Carolyn Taylor, who works in an area of Chattanooga that was locked down, told WRCB that she heard several gunshots before police began rushing to Amnicola Highway near the incident at the Navy recruiting building.

"I've worked on Amnicola for several years," Taylor said. "I've never seen anything like this. Never."

The U.S. Navy tweeted Thursday that there has been a shooting at a Navy reserve center on Amnicola Highway in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Navy also said it was investigating a shooting at another Navy building in the city.

One officer is "down" in connection with the shooting, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke told reporters.

He was not specific about the officer's condition.

"This is a very, very terrible situation and we need to go figure out how we can handle it," he said.

Meanwhile, a witness in Chattanooga told CNN that she saw a gunman fire shots at a building that houses military recruiting offices Thursday morning.

The witness, Gina Mule, said she was watching through a window from a restaurant where she works as a server. In an earlier account, she said she** saw a man with "a high-powered rifle" fire multiple shots around 10:50 a.m. ET.

Authorities were investigating an "active shooter incident" late Thursday morning in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Fire Chief Randy Jackson said.

"Horrific incident in our community," tweeted Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke. "We will release details as they are confirmed. Prayers to all those affected."

Officials gave conflicting information about where exactly the shooting happened.

Jackson said paramedics were standing by but had not transported anyone at this time.

Photos posted on Twitter by media outlets showed police blocking a road and a large number of patrol cars.

A witness told CNN that she saw a man with "a high-powered rifle" fire multiple shots at a military recruiting center, and that he had been in a silver Mustang. She said she was watching through a window from inside a restaurant.

Gina Mule said she heard "Pow, pow, pow!" around 10:50 a.m. ET.

"I don't know how many shots he fired, but it was a lot," she said.

Chattanooga State Community College asked people on its main campus to stay inside because of a "confirmed shooting," the school said on Twitter.

Tiger Alert!!! Main Campus: Confirmed shooting. Stay away from Riverpark. Everyone stay inside, close doors.

A gunman opened fire on a Navy and Marine Reserve Center in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday, leaving four Marines dead, and a recruiter wounded. The gunman was also killed.

Officials said during a news conference that gunman had numerous weapons, and the police chief, Fred Fletcher, said that the Marines had been “brutally and brazenly attacked.”

Several other people, including a police officer, were injured in the episode that began at about 10:45 a.m. at a recruiting center on Lee Highway in and ended about 30 minutes later at the facility on Amnicola Highway, where all of the deaths occurred. Photographs of the Amnicola facility showed the windows riddled with bullet holes.

The United States attorney Bill Killian said that federal investigators would take the lead on the case, which he initially called an “act of domestic terrorism” before backing away, saying that the investigation would determine how the crime should be labeled.

The mayor of Chattanooga, Andy Berke, said a number of others had been wounded in the episode, including at least one police officer.

In a statement, the White House said, “The president has been briefed by his national security staff on the Chattanooga shooting, and will continue to get updates as warranted.”

The episode unnerved one of Tennessee’s largest cities. The Chattanooga State Community College posted an alert on its website that urged people on its main campus to remain inside and to close doors. Lee University, which is near Chattanooga, temporarily ordered a lockdown, the university said.

Bradley Square Mall, in the nearby suburb of Cleveland, also said it had initiated a lockdown, but the mall’s management said that local media reports of gunfire there were inaccurate. “There have been no shots fired at Bradley Square Mall,” the mall’s Facebook page said. It called the lockdown “a safety precaution.”

Dalya Qualls, the deputy communications director for the Tennessee Department of Public Safety, said the Tennessee Highway Patrol was assisting with the incident but did not provide further information.

Tennessee gunman was armed to the teeth and ready for war with America

Mohammad Youusef Abdulazeez, the naturalized American-turned Islamic radical who killed four Marines Thursday, was heavily armed, wore an ammo vest and was bent on waging war against America, according to authorities who spoke a day after the horrific attack at two military facilities in Chattanooga.

Abdulazeez, 24, a Kuwaiti-born Chattanooga resident who was killed by police to end his rampage, used an AK-47 to gun down the unarmed Marines after crashing into a gate at the Navy Operations Support Center, according to Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. And the troubled gunman, who officials believe had become increasingly radicalized in recent months, wore an ammo vest with multiple rounds of ammunition, while carrying other weapons.

"Some of the weapons were purchased legally and some may not have been. We will examine that," FBI Special Agent in Charge Ed Reinhold said, speaking at a news conference in Chattanooga hours after McCaul gave his briefing.

In addition to the small arsenal Abdulazeez brought for his maniacal spree, authorities are investigating recent travels by the apparent Islamic radical, including a trip to Jordan in 2014 and another possible jaunt to Yemen.

Sources close to the investigation told Fox News authorities are trying to determine whether Abdulazeez had any contact with extremists during his seven-month stay in Jordan. Abdulazeez is believed to have traveled to the Middle East between April and November 2014.

Authorities continued to search Abdulazeez's computer Friday, but had not found an extensive online presence and had not uncovered evidence suggesting he was directly inspired by the Islamic State.

The FBI is investigating two blog posts written on Monday to determine if Abdulazeez was behind them, including one that proclaimed that life is "short and bitter" and urged readers to "submit to Allah," the Wall Street Journal reported.

The National Counterterrorism Center said it is still reviewing its data holdings and watch lists and have so far found no positive hits for Abdulazeez, though it emphasized the review is ongoing.

At approximately 10:50 a.m. Thursday, the gunman opened fire from his silver Mustang convertible at a military recruitment center in a strip mall east of downtown Chattanooga, where one Marine was wounded. Authorities said the shooter then drove 7 miles to a Navy Operations Support Center, crashing his car through a security gate before opening fire on four Marines, killing them. A police officer and sailor were also wounded.

McCaul said Friday he believes Abdulazeez was radicalized online by ISIS members or their supporters in Syria.

"Based on my experience, I think he was radicalized by these individuals in Syria," he said during a press conference at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla.

"This is a new generation of terrorists," said McCaul, who was briefed on the case by the FBI. "The threat is real and it comes from the Internet."

"They don't have to travel to Iraq and Syria," he added. "They're already here."

The FBI said Friday afternoon it could not confirm Abdulazeez was inspired by ISIS. Federal authorities also declined to elaborate on the specific weapons used. Reinhold told reporters during a separate news conference that Abdulazeez had "at least two long guns and one hand gun."

"Some of the weapons were purchased legally and some may not have been. We will examine that," Reinhold said.

Abdulazeez got an engineering degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2012 and worked as an intern a few years ago at the Tennessee Valley Authority, the federally owned utility that operates power plants and dams across the South. For the last three months, he had been working at Superior Essex Inc., which designs and makes wire and cable products.

In April, he was arrested on a drunken driving charge, and a mugshot showed him with a bushy beard. In earlier photos, he was clean-shaven.

Hussnain Javid said they graduated a few years apart from Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, where Abdulazeez was on the wrestling team and a popular student.

"He was very outgoing," said Javid, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. "Everyone knew of him."

Javid said he occasionally saw Abdulazeez at the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga, but the last time was roughly a year ago.

Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez pulled up to his military targets in a rented, silver Mustang convertible, wearing a vest with extra ammunition, wielding at least two long guns and a handgun. His once clean-shaven face was covered with a bushy beard. A short time later, four Marines he had shot lay dead. A sailor wounded by him died Saturday.

The image of Abdulazeez described by investigators doesn't square with the seemingly ordinary man described by neighbours and classmates: A clean-cut wrestler, the brother of a tennis player, the son of parents who drove no-frills cars. A man who played with the neighbourhood kids growing up, gave a lift to a neighbour in a snowstorm.

Just days before the shootings, Abdulazeez was seen dribbling a soccer ball in his yard. He told two longtime friends he was excited about his new job at a company that makes wire and cable products.

"Everything seemed fine. He was normal. He was telling me work was going great," said Ahmed Saleen Islam, 26, who knew Abdulazeez through the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga and saw him at the mosque two or three nights before the attacks. "We are so shocked and angry ... we wish he would have come to us."

Hailey Bureau, 25, recalled sitting next to Abdulazeez in high school because their last names were close alphabetically. She said she broke down when she learned he was the gunman, saying, "It's so shocking. I imagine him the way I knew him then, laughing and smiling."

Bureau recalled Abdulazeez's wry sense of humour in a quote next to his yearbook photo: "My name causes national security alerts. What does yours do?"

The 24-year-old Kuwait-born man opened fire on two U.S. military sites in Chattanooga in an attack that left four Marines dead at the scene and a sailor who succumbed to his injuries later. The death of Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Randall Smith, a reservist serving on active duty at the Chattanooga centre, was announced Saturday by the Navy.

It's not clear what set Abdulazeez on the path to violence that ended with him being gunned down by police.

Abdulazeez did not appear to have been on federal authorities' radar before the bloodshed Thursday, officials said. But now counterterrorism investigators are taking a deep look at his online activities and foreign travel.

"It would be premature to speculate on exactly why the shooter did what he did," FBI agent Ed Reinhold said. "However, we are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether this person acted alone or was inspired or directed."

In the quiet neighbourhood in Hixson, Tennessee, where Abdulazeez lived with his parents in a two-story home, residents and former classmates described an ordinary suburban life. However, court documents allege it was an abusive and turbulent household.

Abdulazeez's mother, Rasmia Ibrahim Abdulazeez, filed a divorce complaint in 2009 accusing her husband, Youssuf Saed Abdulazeez, of beating her repeatedly in front of their children and sexually assaulting her. She also accused him of "striking and berating" the children without provocation. Weeks later, the couple agreed to reconcile, with the father consenting to go to counselling.

Abdulazeez graduated from Red Bank High School in Chattanooga, where he was on the wrestling team. A fellow Red Bank High graduate, Hussnain Javid, said Abdulazeez was "very outgoing."

"Obviously something has happened since then," said Sam Plank, who graduated two years ahead of Abdulazeez but hadn't crossed paths with him since 2006. "He was as Americanized as anyone else."

Bilal Sheikh, 25, said he had known Abdulazeez since they were teenagers and he never expressed any negative feelings about the United States or members of the military.

"He never said anything that would have been a red flag," Sheikh said. "I have so many questions in my head. I want to know why? What made him crack all of a sudden? It's mind-boggling."

Abdulazeez got an engineering degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2012 and worked as an intern a few years ago at the Tennessee Valley Authority, the federally owned utility that operates power plants and dams.

He was conditionally hired as an engineer at the Perry nuclear power plant near Cleveland and spent 10 days there before he was let go in May 2013 because he failed a background check, said Todd Schneider, a FirstEnergy Corp. spokesman. A federal official briefed on the matter told The Associated Press that Abdulazeez was dismissed because he failed a drug test. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing law enforcement investigation.

For the past three months, Abdulazeez had been working at Superior Essex Inc. In April, he was arrested on a drunken driving charge.

Karen Jones, who lived next to the family for 14 years, said she was surprised last weekend by his appearance when she saw him walking with another man in woods behind the house, where he liked to shoot pellet guns at a red target in a tree.

"He had this big beard, which was not how he used to be," Jones said.

The official Kuwait News Agency on Friday quoted the Interior Ministry as saying while Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait, he was of Jordanian origin.

A U.S. official who was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity said Abdulazeez was in Jordan last year for months, and those travels and anyone he met with are being looked at.

Florida governor orders National Guard recruiters to leave storefront locations

The comments came as Navy officials confirmed a separate incident outside Atlanta, where a recruiter accidently shot himself in the leg with his personal .45-caliber pistol while discussing the Tennessee shootings with one of his recruits. Officials said he showed the sailor the unloaded gun, then reloaded it and inadvertently discharged it as he was putting it back in his holster.
