Chisinau (AFP) - Moldovan Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici announced his resignation on Friday, just four months into the job, after being accused of faking his education credentials.
"I have decided to announce my resignation. I can't stay in this position any longer," Gaburici said in a statement posted on the government's website.
"I am not a politician, I am a manager. I don't want to to take part in political games," the 38-year-old premier added.
Gaburici, who was questioned by prosecutors on Thursday over allegations he faked his high school diploma, said he hoped his stepping down would take the political focus off him and help ensure stability.
"I don't want the question of my education to become a topic of national importance," he said.
Gaburici took office on February 18 after his Liberal Democratic Party parties managed to form a coalition with other pro-European parties after November elections.

House representatives also voted to prohibit training of Ukraine's Azov Battalion
US Congressmen have banned the supply of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine, with some House representatives also labelling the Ukrainian paramilitary Azov battalion as 'neo-Nazi'.
They voted on the amendment of a defence bill late on Thursday. The decision means all American training and funding for the unit is now prohibited.
One of the authors of the amendment said: "If there's one simple lesson we can take away from US involvement in conflicts overseas, it's this: Beware of unintended consequences. As was made vividly clear with US involvement in Afghanistan during the Soviet invasion decades ago, overzealous military assistance or the hyper-weaponization of conflicts can have destabilizing consequences and ultimately undercut our own national interests".
Now approved by congressmen, the law must pass the Senate and be signed by President Barack Obama before it becomes enshrined into law.

The United States is operating underground laboratories that conduct research on weaponized disease, the Russian Foreign Ministry has alleged. These labs are creating biological weapons even with U.S. agreeing to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention or BTWC, a 1972 international treaty aimed at stopping development of weaponized disease worldwide.
U.S. seeks other countries to develop weaponized disease
Russia is concern about the U.S. developing biological weapons especially that one of its neighbors, Georgia, hosts one such undercover labs. According to Russian Foreign Ministry, the Richard G. Lugar Center for Public and Animal Health Research is an undercover American bioweapons lab. The center is allegedly a branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
“American and Georgian authorities are trying to cover up the real nature of this US military unit, which studies highly dangerous infectious diseases. The Pentagon is trying to establish similar covert medico-biological facilities in other countries [in Russia’s neighborhood],” a statement from the Russian ministry stated as quoted by RT.
Russia alleged that with U.S.’s continued development of weaponized disease, it is disrupting the BTWC.
“The US administration is obviously not interested in strengthening this convention. It’s known that in 2001 the US unilaterally torpedoed multilateral talks in Geneva to work on a verification mechanism for the BWTC and have since obstructed their restart. Decades of international effort to strengthen the convention were derailed,” the statement said.
