Syri is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

Minister zei niks te weten van verhaal dat Erdogan jihadisten steunt
CDA-kamerlid Pieter Omtzigt kan deze dagen op stevige belangstelling rekenen in de Turkse media. Hij is in het bezit van geheime bewijsstukken over Turkse wapenleveranties aan jihadisten in Syri. Omtzigt en zijn fractiegenoot Raymond Knops positioneren zich al langer als activistische critici van president Erdogan, vervolgstappen in Turkse EU-toetreding en de mensenrechten in het land. Maar met de documentenkwestie heeft minister van buitenlandse zaken Bert Koenders er een probleem bij in het hoofdpijndossier Turkije.
De zaak begon te spelen onder Koenders' voorganger Timmermans. Op 17 oktober bevroeg Omtzigt hem over uitspraken van de Turkse oppositieleider Kilicdaroglu. Die zou een proces-verbaal en getuigenverklaringen hebben ingezien over een wapentransport van de Turkse inlichtingendienst.
Op 1 januari 2014 reden drie vrachtwagens van een nauw met de Turkse regering verbonden hulporganisatie in Zuid-Turkije richting de Syrische grens. Iets buiten Adana, de stad die Nederland met de Patriotmissie beschermt, hielden gendarmes en een officier van justitie ze staande. In de laadruimtes troffen zij wapens aan. De wetshandhavers werden vervolgens snel van de zaak afgehaald en beschuldigd van het illegaal doorzoeken van de vrachtwagens. Die zouden van de geheime dienst zijn en niet gehinderd mogen worden.
Volgens de Turkse oppositie bewijst de vondst dat Erdogan wapens levert aan Al-Qaida in Syri. De autoriteiten in Ankara wijzen dit van de hand. De officier van justitie in Adana zou banden hebben met de invloedrijke geestelijke Glen, een tegenstander van Erdogan. Het zou gaan om vuil spel om een politieke tegenstander zwart te maken.
Na zijn Kamervragen in oktober kreeg ook Omtzigt de documenten uit Adana in handen. Hij oordeelde direct dat dit werk voor de Nederlandse inlichtingendiensten is. Op 4 november had hij een gesprek met minister van veiligheid en justitie Opstelten en de nationaal cordinator terrorisme en veiligheid. Toen overhandigde hij hen de stukken. Weer twee weken later, op 13 november, beantwoordde de nieuwe minister Bert Koenders de Kamervragen. Er is Nederland niets bekend over Turkse steun aan extremisten in Syri, zo schreef hij.
Vorige week werd Koenders door CDA-Kamerlid Raymond Knops herinnerd aan het gesprek tussen Omtzigt en Opstelten. Koenders bekende dat hij bij zijn beantwoording niet op de hoogte was van de documenten, en beloofde er op terug te komen.
Die reactie wordt een pijnlijke aangelegenheid. Ten eerste moet Koenders uitleggen waarom Opstelten hem niet over de documenten vertelde. Maar nog gevoeliger is dat de Turkse regering de documenten inmiddels tot staatsgeheim heeft verklaard. Twitter sluit accounts waarop ze verspreid worden, want anders blokkeert de Turkse regering de dienst. Peace talks conference held in Damascusquote:The Israeli regime is reportedly cooperating with the al-Nusra Front terrorist group in the battle against the Syrian government.
Citing reports on Syrian opposition websites, the Haaretz newspaper said that the militants operating in the Golan Heights “provide ongoing intelligence information to Israel, and also receive help from the latter in the form of weapons and military training.”
The Nusra Front is a terrorist group and is responsible for horrible acts of terror against innocent civilians in Syria.

- In its official obituary for the six martyrs, Hezbollah did not employ the phrase “martyred while performing their jihadist duty,” which was used in all other obituaries for their fighters in Syria. This is a clear sign that the six fighters were killed in a confrontation with Israel, which proves the veracity of Hezbollah’s argument that the war it is fighting in Syria is a war with Israel and its allies, without neglecting the takfiri danger. This is a point that the party will benefit from later, on both moral and operational levels.
- The attack proved that Israel is intervening directly in the Golan Heights, contrary to reports that it is engaged in only indirect intervention, logistical and informational support, treating the wounded and participating in some bombing operations.
- Expanding what Israel calls its northern front to include the Golan Heights, as well as South Lebanon, once again proves the veracity of Hezbollah’s logic and its keenness not to allow Israel or the takfiris to separate the two fronts.
- The attack provided the resistance with the justification to continue to work with the Syrians — an effort that is already underway, and which has seen a great amount of progress — and prepare a support base and operational environment in Syria to launch a resistance movement in the Golan Heights. This attack will accelerate the process.
If Hezbollah’s announcement of the Labbouneh operation in August 2013 took months and its announcement of the Shebaa operation in October 2014 took hours, it is not unlikely that the announcement of this coming strike will be simultaneous with its execution.
The question of Hezbollah’s retaliation to the airstrike is a foregone conclusion. The discussion is only about the place and the time, which is not supposed to be too far in the future. Although Hezbollah does not operate based on the logic of tribal revenge, a painful military response is inevitable for many reasons related to the morale of the resistance movement’s supporters, and the fact that this was an intentional and public assassination of its cadres. But the most basic and important reason is Israel’s attempt to change the recognized rules of engagement and impose new ones. The response therefore will be clear and unambiguous.
If Hezbollah’s announcement of the Labbouneh operation in August 2013 took months and its announcement of the Shebaa operation in October 2014 took hours, it is not unlikely that the announcement of this coming strike will be simultaneous with its execution.
Therefore, the time, place and nature of the response is being discussed by the leadership of the resistance. It is a decision that takes several factors into consideration, including the condition of the resistance movement itself, the circumstances of the Syrian army, the internal Lebanese situation, regional realities, the possibility of an Israeli response to Hezbollah’s retaliation, and the possibility of escalating to a broad war.
Hezbollah is prepared to confront any kind of escalation. However, the initial assessment indicates that Israel might be forced to swallow this retaliation no matter how harsh it is, primarily, due to US considerations regarding the nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran. This does not preclude the continuation of the war involving “strikes under the radar” that is going on between the two sides. Indeed we might find proof of Israeli efforts to calm the situation in its statement yesterday that the Quneitra attack was not aimed at assassinating the general in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, Mohammed Ali Allahdadi, and that they saw this as “a limited tactical operation” within this context.
Informed Syrian sources told Al-Akhbar that the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, General Qassem Soleimani, stopped in Damascus about 10 days ago on his way to Beirut to meet the leadership of the resistance. The visit coincided with reports of Iranian diplomats saying that there was major progress in the nuclear talks, and that Washington had informed its allies in Riyadh and Tel Aviv of this. Regardless of US intentions, they are interested in reaching a major regional agreement, as well as coordinating with Tehran against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) at least in Iraq, and conducting preliminary talks about the general outline of a political solution in Syria. Thus, the US will not allow the Israelis to drag the region into an all-out war that destroys this achievement, which Barack Obama has been working towards since his first term.
[I]t is not in Israel’s interest to wage a war that restores Hezbollah’s stature in the Arab world and takes the conflict in the region back to its core (Arab-Israeli conflict).
On the military level, Tel Aviv has realized — in light of what Nasrallah recently said about Hezbollah’s arsenal — that the war with the resistance movement will not be a walk in the park, given the tens of thousands of precise and advanced missiles it has, and that no electoral project inside Israel could withstand it. Politically speaking, it is not in Israel’s interest to wage a war that restores Hezbollah’s stature in the Arab world and takes the conflict in the region back to its core (Arab-Israeli conflict), in light of the sectarian tensions, which are convenient for the Zionist state.
By attacking Syrian territories, Israel provided the resistance with the justification to retaliate from the Syrian front, without neglecting other fronts. Not to mention that Lebanese parties would be more accepting of a response from Syria, as it may spare Lebanon its own repercussions, and does not subvert the climate of communication and dialogue with other political parties.

Vier jaar later probeert Driss het weer. Ditmaal reist hij af naar Kenia. Waarschijnlijk om van daaruit door te reizen naar Somali en zich aan te sluiten bij de islamitische terreurgroep Al Shabaab. Opnieuw wordt Driss aangehouden en teruggestuurd naar Nederland. Hier zit hij kort vast, maar tot vervolging komt het nooit. In december 2013 vertrekt Driss opnieuw. Ditmaal naar Syri, om zich aan te sluiten bij IS.
Goede vrienden
Driss is niet alleen op reis gegaan. Hij vertrekt samen met zijn goede vriend Soufian Z., die op latere leeftijd in Den Haag is komen wonen. Het lijkt geen toeval dat de twee elkaar hebben gevonden. Want zo volhardend als Driss is, blijkt ook Soufian te zijn. In 2011 zit hij enkele maanden onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden vast in Pakistan. Mogelijk was dat land een tussenstation tijdens een reis naar Afghanistan. Maar het wordt nooit duidelijk of Soufian daar echt heen wilde.
Soufians detentie, de 'jihadreizen' van Driss en hun gezamenlijke rotsvaste geloof bezorgen de twee aanzien bij andere radicale moslims in de Schilderswijk. Net als hun afkeer van de VS en democratie.
Radicale denkbeelden
Maar de twee oogsten ook afkeer. Van geloofsgenoten, die de opvattingen van de twee niet delen. Vanwege hun standpunten worden Driss en Soufian, samen met andere jongens, rond 2005 uit de Haagse As Soennah-moskee gezet. Hun denkbeelden gaan zelfs de leiding van de omstreden salafistische moskee in Den Haag te ver.
Terwijl Driss bij het grote publiek uit beeld verdwijnt zodra hij de wapens opneemt tegen het regime van president Assad, komt Soufian na zijn vertrek naar Syri juist steeds nadrukkelijker in beeld. Hoewel weinigen weten wie er schuilgaat achter de alias Abu Muhammed.
'Oh oh Aleppo'
Soufian maakt als 'fighting journalist' een documentaire over het leven van een Syriganger. De titel 'Oh oh Aleppo' is een knipoog naar de tv-hit Oh oh Cherso. Zoals Sterretje, Jokertje en Barbie heel Nederland laten meegenieten van hun avonturen op Kreta, zo wil Soufian mensen laten hoe het er in Syri aan toegaat. Vanuit zjn oogpunt.
Nog maar enkele weken terug haalt Soufian - wederom onder zijn schuilnaam - de internationale pers. En opnieuw is het een 'knipoog' die hem in de kijker speelt. Als iemand op Twitter hem ervan beschuldigt Jihadi John te zijn, de beruchte IS-strijder die de hoofdrol speelt in enkele onthoofdingsvideo's, trekt hij prompt een masker over zijn hoofd.
Soufian en Driss verblijven de maanden voor hun dood in Raqqa, de 'hoofdstad' van het door IS uitgeroepen kalifaat. Enkele weken geleden geeft Soufian voor het laatst een teken van leven. Via zijn twitteraccount.
Martelaarschap
Gisteravond kwam het nieuws dat hij is overleden. Het martelaarschap - zijn grote droom - heeft hij behaald in een bloedige oorlog. Samen met Driss is hij waarschijnlijk gedood door Amerikaanse bommen. Ze zijn ongeveer 26 jaar geworden.

Christina's a member of Syria's National Defence - an organisation that works with the Syrian army to help locals in each city and village protect themselves from militant groups. Christina believes Syrian woman have always stood alongside men to build and safeguard their country. "My brother participated in battles right here,” she said. “I'm not more precious than my brother, nor more precious than my son or any other Seidnaya man."
Christina and other local women have also created a movement called "White Hands". They deliver food to Seidnaya's defence forces who spend days at their surveillance postions in the mountains. "Here in Seidnaya, when there are bombs targeting the city, the bells of the monasteries and all the churches ring, but we never care, we go and bring sandwiches for the army. We never stop. Nothing can stop us," said Rita, a woman from Seidnaya.
Christian women are aware they risk their lives defending their communities. Extremist rebels could kidnap them for instance, if they leave Seidnaya. But they remain fearless and are not alone. When Christmas approached, Muslim women stepped in to give their fellow Syrians a well-deserved rest.
One 24-year-old fighter, and a former photography student, is proud the women in his family are defending Seidnaya. "Syrian women are defending their country not only because their husbands are, but because it's their country," said Aghiad Al-Sheikh, a volunteer soldier of Seidnaya.
For those fighting in the name of Syrian unity, religion and gender do not seem as important anymore. And in the fourth winter of the Syrian war, it is the white hands of women that protect their communities at all costs. Women of Seidnaya prefer not to stay in the backseat, but instead share the risks, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the men defending the city - and showing a united front to the world.

They persist in this line despite the lack of any convincing evidence that these rebels, however noble their cause, represent a plausible instrument for overthrowing Assad, much less defeating the jihadis.
Not only are these State Department officials blinded by their passion for the good guys (and we’d all like the good Sunni rebels to win), but they also protest fiercely that any move away from the rebels toward Assad would totally alienate key American allies in the region such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Thus the professionals want to stay the current implausible course.
As for their leader, Secretary of State John Kerry, he’s all over the lot on this one. Sometimes, he’s doggedly anti-Assad and pro-rebel. Other days, he’s pulling the door open slightly to an Assad arrangement against the jihadis.
Civilian and military Pentagon officials are pushing hard for a better strategy and for more authority and wherewithal to enhance their fighting capabilities against the Islamic State. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s recent secret memo to the White House was an attempt to clarify an incoherent strategy. Meantime, the Joint Chiefs want to further increase the 2,000-plus boots on the ground in Iraq and expand authority for air attacks in Iraq, and in Syria as well.
What’s truly fascinating in this picture is that the main official flirting with the idea of a working arrangement with Assad is President Obama himself.
Most importantly, Obama’s core of highest level humanitarian interventionists continue to lead the way against any efforts to align with bad guys like Assad and Iran to fight the jihadis. They’re still fixated on Assad’s clearly proven massacres of his own people. He has indeed done terrible things. But these advisers simply don’t get the plain fact that the jihadis are quickly overtaking Assad in atrocities and will go frighteningly further in the end. National Security Adviser Susan Rice and UN Ambassador Samantha Power remain the key knights for this crusade.
What’s truly fascinating in this picture is that the main official flirting with the idea of a working arrangement with Assad is President Obama himself. Administration officials explain his reasoning, privately, as follows:
First and foremost, he’s unalterably against the U.S. getting immersed in any sort of new ground war in the Middle East.
Second, he is much more skeptical than his subordinates about the Sunni rebels getting stronger in any near-term sense, and about America’s current allies contributing significant ground troops to the joint effort.
Third, he realizes that the Islamic State cannot be checked or in the end defeated without strong ground troops.
Fourth, as much as he despises Assad, he understands more than his colleagues do that the jihadis are a far greater threat to American national security and to our allies than Assad ever was or will be.
Fifth and finally, all of this is causing Obama to inch toward some sort of de facto and informal battlefield cooperation with Assad’s forces.
Various forms of tacit and indirect cooperation are all already underway, such as U.S. aircraft not striking Assad’s forces or interfering with Iranian airstrikes (and vice versa) in both Syria and Iraq.
The overwhelming problem is that Obama’s baby steps in the right direction don’t go nearly far enough. He just can’t seem to bring himself to make big and bold strategic choices. He hasn’t figured out how to overcome key and significant issues in a realistic strategy.
For example, the president needs to have his staff develop an approach to political accommodation between our rebels and Assad. The essence of this would be a promise from Assad to focus his forces solely on fighting jihad and one from the rebels to focus their energies on desperately needed humanitarian relief. And to fashion and guarantee such political accommodation, the U.S. needs to work with Assad’s closest allies, Russia and Iran, which are even more fearful of the jihadis than is the United States. These intricate maneuvers won’t be easy, but they are manageable given the common interests of all these parties in battling the jihadis.
Then comes the even knottier problem of bringing the Turks, the Saudis, and others on board. They insist, or rather they act as if, Assad and the Iranians are a bigger threat than the Islamic State. Maybe they still believe this or maybe they are waking up to new realities. In any event, the reality that Washington should wake up to is that our Saudi, Gulf, and Turkish allies have done us more harm to us in dealing with the threat of terrorism than any other countries. Until quite recently, they have been the main providers of arms and money to these Islamic terrorists.
They did more than anyone else to create the tremendous problem that now faces us all. Obama has to say this to their face and tell them that they need to make a major effort to fix it. Specifically that will mean their acceding to a strategy that includes Assad and Iran as the key players in countering the jihadis.
The U.S. confronts major challenges around the world from cyberwarfare, to Russia and China, from global warming to trade pacts. None of these is more dangerous in the next years than the threat of terrorists establishing a viable state in the heart of the Middle East. It will be a hub for worldwide terrorist attacks, as we saw in Paris. It could even get hold of nuclear weapons.
Key American officials and the new powers that be in Congress understand this threat. But they strongly resist the obvious strategic conclusion. The U.S. must have effective working arrangements with Syria and Iran to check and defeat the Islamic State. There is no other way.
Key elements of this approach have to be put together with other countries, and the mutual interests are there to make this doable. As in all foreign and national-security matters, however, it is up to the president of the United States to make the very tough decisions and to lead the way. By precedent, if not law, the president does not require congressional authority to continue fighting this war, but he has asked for it to demonstrate national resolve to friend and foe. First, however, he must demonstrate to Congress, the American people and the world that he knows what he is doing and has a strategy to win with the means provided by Congress. Until he does, they must continue to hold his feet to the fire and take the heretical step of playing a useful role.
