Actor Richard Harris, who most recently starred in the Harry Potter films, has died at the age of 72 at University College Hospital in London. No cause of death was named, though Harris's family said he died peacefully. Recent reports noted that Harris had been undergoing chemotherapy since August after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease, though Harris and his family had been optimistic that he would be able to reprise his role as Professor Albus Dumbledore in the third Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harris's film career took off with the 1963 movie This Sporting Life, which earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination and made him one of Britain's most sought-after actors. Other notable film roles of the era included Hawaii, Camelot, A Man Called Horse, and The Molly Maguires. Harris was also famous for his offscreen exploits, and was characterized along with Richard Burton, Oliver Reed, and Peter O'Toole as one of Britian's most hedonistic and charismatic leading men in the '60s and '70s, living a life of wine, women, and song (including his Grammy-nominated interpretation of "MacArthur Park"). Harris went on to become an accomplished character actor in the '90s, appearing in supporting roles in Unforgiven, Patriot Games, Gladiator, as well as the Potter films; his role in 1990's The Field garnered him a second Best Actor nomination. Harris was married twice, to Elizabeth Rees and Ann Turkel, and is survived by three children, actors Jamie Harris and Jared Harris and director Damian Harris.
