quote:A new video by Polestar Racing shows a first glimpse of Volvo's new touring car.
As Motorsport.com understands, the video features a TC1 car that will be raced in the FIA World Touring Car Championship from the 2016 season onwards.
The team has not yet given more details but an official announcement is expected soon.
Volvo's new foray into the WTCC has been in the rumour mill for quite some time.
The brand had previously completed an evaluation WTCC campaign in 2011 with the aim of launching a fully-fledged works program after that. However, there was no Volvo factory squad in the field in the subsequent season.
The last time Volvo took to the track in WTCC was at Shanghai in 2013 when the brand gave a farewell race appearance to their C30 car before the World Championship switched to TC1 regulations in 2014.
quote:Volvo factory squad Polestar Cyan Racing will join the World Touring Car Championship from 2016, fielding a pair of S60 Polestar TC1s as the Swedish manufacturer returns to the series full-time after four years away.
Volvo Polestar Racing has dabbled in the WTCC before, running their C30, developed for the Swedish Touring Car Championship, at standalone races before joining the WTCC full-time in 2011 with a single-car entry for Robert Dahlgren.
The Swedish marque has made just one appearance since, entering the car for four-time STCC champion Thed Björk in Shanghai 2013.
With the new S60 Polestar TC1, Volvo will join Citroen, Lada and Honda as manufacturer entries in the 2016 WTCC season, the first time four manufacturers have been on the grid since 2009 when SEAT, Chevrolet, BMW and Lada fielded entries.
”We have chosen the WTCC as our global motorsport platform as it combines the cutting edge technology of our Volvo cars with exciting racing all over the world,” said Polestar COO Niels Muller.
“The championship enables us to further develop our technology and utilise development from the racing circuits directly to our products for performance oriented Volvo customers.”
”We have got respect for the task ahead of us that we take on with absolute commitment,” added Cyan Racing CEO Christian Dahl.
“This is a long-term effort and we have an extensive testing programme during the winter that will continue alongside our first WTCC season in 2016 that is all about learning.”
The S60 Polestar’s engine will not be a Global Racing Engine, but will be based on Volvo’s Drive-E 4-cylinder unit, producing up to 400bhp.
”To use the Volvo engine as base and not go for the available generic WTCC race engine for our car was a no-brainer," said Mattias Evensson, Cyan Racing’s head of engine development.
"Volvo engines are suitable for racing purposes in terms of power, technology and durability, as we have proven previously in the STCC, V8 Supercars and WTCC.
Volvo’s three factory drivers - Bjork, Dahlgren and Fredrik Ekblom - have already been testing the car at Mantorp Park in recent months. A decision on the team’s driver line-up for 2016 has not yet been made.

quote:Lada Sport has confirmed that Gabriele Tarquini and Hugo Valente will join Nicky Catsburg at the Russian squad for the 2016 WTCC season.
As reported by Motorsport.com last month, Tarquini will continue in the championship for a 12th successive season in 2016, effectively swapping seats with Honda-bound Rob Huff.
The 53-year-old Italian had been informed his services would no longer be required by the Japanese manufacturer last December, saying he had been told he was "too old".
Valente, meanwhile, moves across from the Campos Racing Chevrolet squad, which has yet to confirm its 2016 drivers after running Valente alongside John Filippi full time last year.
Catsburg will have his first full season at Lada in 2016, having been drafted in from the Moscow round onwards last year to replace the departed James Thompson.
The Dutchman's best results of his part-campaign were two fourth places, with Huff securing the Russian team's best result of second in the reverse-grid race at Moscow.
The team finished a distant third in the manufacturers' standings behind Citroen and Honda.
Nicolas Lapierre formed part of Lada's line-up in the closing stages of 2015 alongside Huff and Catsburg, but will focus his attentions on the European Le Mans Series in 2016 with the new DragonSpeed team.
Lada is promising "significant updates" to its Vesta WTCC machine for 2016, including new suspension and chassis components as well as an upgraded engine.
