Brighton and Hove City Council said due to the storms over the last week the shape of the beach had changed and was extremely steep in some places, making it dangerous to walk close to the water's edge.

It urged people to stay well away and to be extra vigilant of young children, holding their hands, and also keeping dogs on leads.

Hastings Borough Council urged residents in low-lying areas of the town to take "common-sense precautions".

It warned that very high tides were expected at about midnight on Thursday and at midday and midnight on Friday which, combined with strong winds creating high waves and low pressure, could lead to "overtopping of the sea defences".
'Exceptional weather'

The Environment Agency said recent heavy rain, saturated ground and high river levels meant there was also a continued risk of river and surface water flooding across the region.

Earlier, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson chaired a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee, in which the UK's flood response was discussed.

He warned that a period of "exceptional weather" would hit the UK with tidal flooding expected in "numerous locations".

Mr Paterson said ministers were working to ensure all agencies were prepared.

A period of "exceptional weather" bringing rain, wind and high tides is set to hit the UK, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has said.

The Environment Agency issued several severe flood warnings - indicating a danger to life - for south-west England, Gloucestershire and Wales.

Tidal flooding is expected in "numerous locations" on Friday due to large waves, high tides and strong winds.

Mr Paterson said ministers were working to ensure all agencies were prepared.

He was speaking after chairing a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee, in which the UK's flood response was discussed.

Dozens of flood warnings are in place in England, Wales and Scotland.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings - the lowest of its three levels - for rain and high winds on Friday in Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland, Wales and England.

Further warnings have also been issued for Sunday.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has said there is potential for flooding in a number of areas across the country, including Belfast, as a result of a tidal surge expected at midday on Friday.

And Devon and Cornwall Police and the Isles of Scilly Council have declared a major incident as waves of more than 30ft (10m) are predicted to hit the coasts in those areas.

Cornwall's emergency management centre will be opened in Truro to co-ordinate the response in the county.

Part of cliff collapses into sea near Hastings

Een deel van een klif in het Engelse Hastings is in zee gestort nadat een krachtige storm voorbij raasde. Enkele mensen waren getuige van het natuurgeweld en legden het moment vast op video.
Het deel van de klif verdween vrijdagmiddag in de zee. Kevin Ice filmde het moment en gaf zijn beelden aan de BBC. Hij vertelde dat hij nog nooit eerder zoiets zag. 'Gelukkig was er waar wij stonden niemand voorbij de reling gegaan.'

Extreem weer
Groot-Brittannië heeft de laatste dagen te kampen met extreem weer. Harde wind en hoogwater leidden gisteren opnieuw tot overstromingen. Autoriteiten waarschuwen nog altijd voor levensgevaarlijke situaties in delen van Wales en het zuidwesten van Engeland evenals in Schotland en enkele plaatsen aan de oostkust.

Ook voor de rest van het weekend voorspellen meteorologen storm. De nooddiensten hebben de bevolking opgeroepen weg te blijven uit kustgebieden uit vrees voor meer overstromingen bij hoogwater.
