A total of five explosions targeted the General Kurdish Security Office building along 60 meter street in Erbil around mid-day Sunday. The death toll reported from security forces has varied from 2 to 6 deaths and there are reports at least 36 people have been injured, Rudaw website reported.

Nawzad Hadi, the governor of Erbil province, told AFP that four members of the Kurdish Asayish security service were killed.

The Ministry of Healthcare of the Kurdistan Regional Government, said that number of victims of the terrorist attacks, that 6 people have been killed and 61 others have been wounded.

The Kurdish security sources of the city have started serious investigations on the attacks.

Sunday's blasts were the first to hit Erbil since May 2007, when a truck bomb exploded near the same Asayish headquarters, killing 14 people and wounding more than 80.

Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region has become increasingly embroiled in the bloody conflict raging across the border in Syria.

Kurdistan president Massoud Barzani has threatened to intervene in the Syrian conflict to protect Kurdish civilians, although officials have since backtracked on those remarks.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—Six people were killed and more than 40 others injured in Erbil today after suicide bombers tried to storm the main security headquarters, said a statement by the security office.

“A minibus driven by a suicide bomber tried to storm the security office in Erbil, but he was fired upon and killed by the guards, and as a result the vehicle exploded,” read a stamen from the Erbil security.

Kurdistan’s Minister of Health Rekawt Rashid said in a press conference that most of the victims are from the police and security forces.

“Immediately following the explosion four suicide bombers armed with weapons and hand grenades attacked and tried to enter the security headquarters, but they were killed by the guards,” read the security statement.

The attacks happened at 1:24 p.m. according to security officials.

Minutes after the first attack, said the official statement, a second suicide bomber had arrived at their headquarters, driving an ambulance packed with explosives.

But the health minister denied that any of their ambulances had exploded. One ambulance was damaged in the attack while trying to rescue the victims, he said.

The Kurdistan Region has been the safest part of Iraq, escaping much of the violence that raged the rest of the country since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

“Our forces have undoubtedly foiled many such plans in the past six years,” said Erbil security.

Today’s attacks came as the Kurdistan Region was celebrating a successful parliamentary election.

Interessant artikel wel. Heb net gelezen dat er 10 terroristen zijn gedood en dat de Koerdische overheid tijdelijk de grenzen sluit en geen Arabieren meer binnen laat. Ook de grenzen met Syrie zijn gesloten. Tot nu toe hebben ze ca. 200,000 Syrische vluchtelingen opgevangen, maar daar zaten dus waarschijnlijk een aantal terroristen bij.

En inderdaad (gelukkig) een matige score. 4-5 autobommen, 6 Koerdische agenten gedood tegenover 10 terroristen.

Waarschijnlijk best veel. Maar daarom is de grens ook gesloten.
De vluchtelingen zitten trouwens in kampen, ze mogen die kampen niet verlaten. En ze worden bij aankomst gescand etc. dus het risico wordt daarmee wel veel kleiner.

Wel jammer dat dit gebeurt, maar eigenlijk best knap dat er ''slechts'' 2-3 aanslagen zijn gepleegd sinds 2003, terwijl ze omringd zijn door landen waar oorlog & verwoesting heerst. Denk maar aan Iran, Syrie, Irak. Zelfs in Europa zijn er meer aanslagen gepleegd en die hebben al die risico's dan weer niet, dat zegt dus wel wat over de veiligheid/controle die de Koerden hebben over hun regio.

Gelukkig zijn er geen burgers omgekomen.
