quote:It was Grandfather John Crocker who, having startled the absentee landowner into selling, had erased St Monica from the map of Surrey and put Lashwater Park in her place. The old man had lived for ten years in his fine new house, ruling his family and servants like the despot he was, and died in 1855 at the age of eighty-two. The Park had passed to his only son Gervase, already a man in his late thirties with two sons and a daughter. These boys they were who now, back from the party at Mount Felix and within a few yards of the gates of home, saw that, just inside and at the door of the lodge, stood a cab. It was a recognisable station-cab and had evidently just arrived. The cabby was unroping a small tin trunk on the roof, while Frost, the second gardener who lived in the lodge, waited below to receive it. Mrs Frost and Marsham — the butler from the Park — stood by the open door, and between them was a female child. Mervyn and John, frankly curious, stopped and stared. The girl appeared pale and frightened. She was about Mervyn's height and wore a shabby black cloak and a plain black straw hat. Her eyes, like those of a trapped animal ready at the first opportunity to make a bolt for it, darted hither and thither in scared dismay. But Mrs Frost had her by the hand (...). (...) The butler regarded them with great solemnity. "There should be room for all of us" he said "unless your lordships prefer to run the last lap also." The boys made a dive for the cab, which moved off in the direction of the big house. "What's on, Marshy?" demanded Mervyn. "Who's the kid and where' ve you been?" "Acting on instructions from your papa, I fetched from the station a child I have never seen before and deposited her with Mrs Frost for reasons of which I know nothing." "Oh, cheese it! You might tell a chap!" "Hardly my place, Master Mervyn, to tell even a chap what is not my business. Besides, beyond the fact that the child's name is Heape I have nothing to tell. No doubt your papa . . ."

quote:The central feature of Ganderton's design was Larne Circle, a ring of tall houses boldly conceived, facaded on a curve and pierced by entries at four opposite points.
(...)Having planned his Circle and carried the houses to within reasonable distance of completion, Ganderton proceeded to create an outer ring of even more unconventional dwellings. This involved a semi-circular road enclosing the north-westerly curve of the Circle and, where at each end it somewhat lower level. (...) Before the circular road was fully built up, Ganderton went bankrupt and died; the property was put up for forced sale by the creditors, and fell into hands very different from those foreseen by its luckless creator. It became, in brief, a divisional headquarters of an organization comprising some of the worst men and women in London, and of this particular headquarters little William Slode, with his twinkling eyes, his cheerful giggle and his smooth pink cheeks, was in command. Already by 1860 when Lottie Heape was brought there, Larne Circle and its outer ring carried the marks of premature decay.

Lijkt me dus niet echt relevant.
