A long list today, merely because due to too many earthquakes and no need of urgency at El Hierro.
Almost all the ver weak) earthquakes today were right below the center of the island. We think none of them was felt by the islanders.

Nothing really spectacular but still a bunch of earthquakes at El Hierro. When a crisis starts, these weak earthquakes are almost never listed. It is a pity that IGN stopped doing that. Publishing them, eventually in a separate list, would be great as this seismicity gives an even better view on the activity.
IGN has done this during the first pre-eruption crises. Why they stopped publishing them is one of the many unanswered questions.

2 more earthquakes since our last update. The avcan image below shows the epicenters of the last 14 earthquakes. All of them 9 to 13 km below see level.

A lot of seismic activity since midnight (12) and the last couple of days. The earthquakes are however weak to very weak. Hard to say what will follow but me might have more attention for El Hierro today than the preceding days. The CHIE graph is simply USELESS for volcano followers like us. The amplitude of the events has been scaled back so strongly that even an earthquake is hard to see. This kind of behavior of the authorities was in earlier times reserved for some dictatorship states who did not want to get “bad news” outside the country.
En nog een die wat meer opvalt.quote:2013-07-29 07:36 UTC
Less earthquakes since our latest update, but 2 of the few remaining (M2.8 and M3.0) have been felt by the islanders.

The Magnitude of the earthquakes is gradually increasing. Today, only 2 earthquakes reported by IGN but with a Magnitude of M2 and M2.6. Epicenter in the El Golfo area and a second spot near the Lighthouse (Orchilla).
To soon to attract conclusions on the current events but the following days might see a further increase of stronger activity. Keep a look at it together with us and send a comment if something interesting is taking place.

For some it might be another boring update, but those who are following El Hierro from the beginning do know that it all starts with increased seismicity. What to retain about the below list ? Almost all of the 10 to 12 km depth weak earthquakes are happening in the El Golfo area (near the coast or below the coastal area. Only the M2.5 or more might be felt be people and we have only 1 of the list like that.

A bunch of (weak to very weak) earthquake below or around El Hierro since 4 days :

A big number of new (however weak to very weak) earthquakes. Most of them in the immediate vicinity of the island and almost all of them at a depth of 10 km. You won’t see them on the CHIE seismograph but we would not be surprised that some increasing action would start soon. (Thank you Chris and Leona for telling us). All what happens at the moment can only be recorded by instruments. People on the island will not feel it.

And another 11 earthquakes since our latest update, which brings the total today up to 28. Even the CHIE seismogram is showing more and more earthquakes.

Seismicity also continues today, at least many times more than the preceding weeks. Compared to the powerful earthquake periods in the past, the current earthquakes are really nothing. Nice that IGN shows us this list but keep in mind that the current weak earthquakes did not even show up in the lists at that time.

Nature and volcanoes especially are really unpredictable. What yesterday looked as a new start of seismicity and more action has died down again today.

Less earthquakes than before but one serious M2.9 with an epicenter in the Las Calmas sea. Depth however at 16 km (deepest of all today’s earthquakes)

Seismicity report for the last 2 days
quote:2013-08-18 06:20 UTC
While on CHIE we can’t see almost nothing, another seismograph has started to show some consistent tremor. this may be caused by a badly working instrument, but the tremor shows like real at least. Strange however that there is ni increase in seismicity as the tremor shows a lot of small peaks. We will keep en eye on it during the day to find out whether it is real or wrong.
quote:2013-08-18 21:00 UTC
The tremor stopped later in the day as you can see on the seismogram below. We still do not know whether it was instrumental or real but without recognizable seismicity we think it might have been weather related or instrumental. No additional reported earthquakes since this morning.
