Als je zelf wat beperkte ankerpunten hebt vind je al gauw iets dwaas. Hoe kleiner je referentiekader, hoe dwazer voor jou de buitenwereld. Het lijkt erop dat je dat wat afwijkt van wat jij normaal vindt geen plek kunt geven en dus verleen je het een plek door er een stigma op te plakken. In dit geval: "Gebrek aan intellect". Iemand's eigen zijnswijze voor jou afgesloten en in een hokje gestopt, jezelf een beperking bij verbreding van je leefwereld opgelegd.

Ik verbaas me er vaak over dat mensen hun eigen kwalen etaleren middels hun verbale en non-verbale ontboezemingen.

Gezien ik al even niet meer in Utrecht ben geweest ga ik denk ik die kant op. White Noise en Plato zitten daar (hoop ik nog steeds) op een steenworp afstand van elkaar dus da's dubbele kans

Well people, the deal is finally done. Iced Earth will be calling SPV home
for the next few records. After over a year and a half of intense
negotiations & music business bullshit I made the decision to go with the
company that did such an amazing job on the Demons & Wizards release. I am

Ik heb ze jaren geleden voor 't eerst gezien, toen Matthew er pas net zong, ik sta nog met 'm op de foto voor de Biebob in Vosselaar (B). Oh ja en een jaartje of 5 terug hebben ze nog een DOA warming up concert gegeven in het Dynamo Kaffée, daarna zijn met de band en een handjevol andere scumbags, stratumeind nog lekker onveilig gaan maken!

I wanted to post a quick update for you guys.
We will begin recording around the first week of April. I am very happy with the way things are going. I've never felt so good and excited about a record before, this will really be a special one.
A while back I was working on a song called Gettysburg and it was a nice piece of music but it really wasn't giving me what I felt I needed to tell the story of what went on there 140 years ago. It's nearly impossible in 5-6 minutes of music. So around Super Bowl weekend I scrapped the original idea and started writing what I hope will be the biggest and best epic I've ever written. It has, without a doubt, been the most challenging subject matter and emotionally taxing undertaking that I've ever tackled. It will be just about 30 minutes long and told in 3 parts; one for each day of the battle. It will be called Gettysburg (1863) but will consist of 3 songs entitled "The Devil to Pay", "Hold at all Costs", and "High Water Mark." I will be hiring the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra to perform on it, as well as a few parts on a couple of other songs. I am working on string sections and the other symphony parts now and finishing up lyrics on it and on some of the other tunes.
Here are some more titles, these are pretty much final. "Declaration Day", "When the Eagle Cries", "The Reckoning (Don't Tread On Me)", "Greenface", "Red Baron/Blue Max", "Attila", "Waterloo", "Valley Forge", "A Gift or A Curse?" and "Hollow Man." This release will take up nearly every available minute on the CD format, because you deserve it!
Anyway, I just wanted to give you a quick update and fill you in on what's happening. I think SPV is looking at a late August early September release.
I'll be in touch one more time before tracking begins.

"We starting mixing at Morrissound on May 19th and have it booked until the 30th. The final master has to be delivered (to SPV), by June 1. Normally we only take a few days, but we've got to do the stereo mix of 'Gettysburg' and the 5.1, that's why we need so much time. Morrissound doesn't even have the equipment for the 5.1 mix. They have to rent it."

Glorious Burden, the debut for new label SPV, is expected this Fall.

Former DEATH touring guitarist and current MILLENIUM axeman Ralph Santolla has joined ICED EARTH as a replacement for Larry Tarnowski, who left the group earlier in the year in order to continue his studies. Santolla reportedly plans to keep working on new MILLENIUM material and has recently welcomed singer Todd Plant back into the fold for the band's future releases.

ICED EARTH are currently on the lookout for a new frontman following the departure of Matt Barlow earlier in the month. A new album, titled "Glorious Burden", is due before the end of the year through SPV/Steamhammer Records.

Longtime singer Matthew Barlow recently parts with the band during recordings for their new album "The Glorious Burden". The vocals of the new material has to be rerecorded by the new ICED EARTH-Frontman that will be announced shortly. Read the statements of Matthew Barlow and band leader Jon Schaffer here:

Er is dus al een nieuwe zanger.

Zijn er ook tracks met Barlow nog opgenomen trouwens?
Krijg je misschien zoiets als bij Tokyo Blade. Ze hadden het tweede album al geheel opgenomen met de zanger, hij verlaat de band en toen hebben ze het hele album nog eens opgenomen met een nieuwe dude.
Later hebben ze als novelty de eerste versie van "Night of the blade" uitgebracht als "The Night Before". Zou cool zijn als IE ook zoiets had.

Ik hoop eigenlijk op een wat meer onbekende zanger.Het liefst met een iets zwaardere stem.Een beetje zoals matt op burnt offerings.

Well the album is done, and it's not just done, it rules!! I have never been more pleased in all my years of recording.
It came out the way it was supposed to be!
And now for the big news, it's Tim Owens on vocals and he did an amazing job! I know there were a lot of people hoping that this would be the case, and it is.
I've asked Neil to put a sample of 3 of the songs for you guys to check out. SPV agreed to letting me do this as long as I did not put the whole song up. I hope you enjoy them, I know I do.

I can honestly tell you I've never felt better and am truly looking to the future with more optimism than ever before.

ICED EARTH's SCHAFFER: Ex-JUDAS PRIEST Singer Is Not A Member Of The Band - Aug. 8, 2003

Former JUDAS PRIEST frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens contributed vocals to the upcoming ICED EARTH album, "The Glorious Burden", as a guest singer only and has not yet made up his mind as to whether he will join the band permanently.

Speaking to Canada's BW&BK, ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer clarified Owens' status in the group.

"Tim was hired to do the vocals for the record only," he said. "Two days after we finished, he lost his gig with PRIEST. Obviously this changes things and maybe he will be the new guy someday in the future, but right now he needs some time to figure out what he's going to do."

"There will come a time when I will decide to look for a permanent singer in the near future, if Tim can't commit. I hired Tim to do this record knowing that he had the ability to do the parts that I'd written and that was the extent of it. I would love to have Tim as the new frontman in ICED EARTH, but he's got to want it or it's no good for anyone involved. He's going through a big change in his life and I will give him some time to figure out what he wants for his future career, but obviously we can't wait forever."

"Either way, ICED EARTH will carry on in the same tradition as always. I feel great and am very, very optimistic for the band's future, no matter who ends up in the vocal position. I will find the right guy and maybe it is Tim. Time will tell. This record has brought about a new beginning for the band and fate will take its course!"

In an interview with Cleveland's The Beacon Journal last month, Tim indicated that since JUDAS PRIEST's last tour ended in the fall, he has been working on solo demos and has just completed vocal tracks with a well-known musician he declined to name (presumably referring to Schaffer). Owens described his upcoming original work as GODSMACK-meets-PANTERA-meets-PRIEST.

ICED EARTH's "The Glorious Burden", with Tim Owens on vocals, is scheduled to be released through SPV Records in the fall.

Well everyone, it is official. Tim Owens is the new frontman and lead vocalist of Iced Earth and I couldn't be happier!
There is no doubt that fate has played a big part in our lives in these last few months and I truly beleive that this is the way it was meant to be. Everything happens for a reason!!
Tim did an outstanding job on this record. In 5 very relaxed days he nailed the parts, and I mean NAILED them, and I don't think I've ever laughed as much and had as much fun in the studio before. He is definitely bringing new life into the band and the future looks very bright for us as a team. Tim knows who he is, what he stands for and is very dedicated; and he's funny as hell, all very important traits!
One of the greatest things about all of it is that The Glorious Burden is a new beginning. I'm very, very excited to see what Tim and I can do together as a writing team.
There is real chemistry between the two of us and I'm 100% confident that I.E.'s best work is in our future. I feel like I'm 10 years younger and am having more fun than I've ever had before. I see us having a very long and fullfilling career together!

The art is done and the layouts are almost there and before you know it the best Iced Earth album to date will be unleashed. In my opinion, nothing we've ever done comes close to "The Glorious Burden". It is by far the best album so far, in all ways, writing, performance and spirit. It is now the way it was meant to be!

The Reckoning single will now be released in North America on October 21st (October 27th in Europe), and The Glorious Burden album will now come out on January 13th, 2004 (January 12th in Europe) through SPV.

"Actually, the label wanted to do an EP more than I did," admits the outspoken one, "but when I saw them doing all kinds of (promotional) things than Century (Media, former label) never did, I was sold. SPV wanted something exclusive, on the EP, but I don't really like doing that. To me, it's not fair. It's supposed to be offered at a low price, like four or five dollars. If you just want to wait, the deluxe version will have everything we recorded in this session. The American version (of The Glorious Burden) will have 'Greenface', where the European will have 'Waterloo' and the single, 'When The Eagle Cries (unplugged)' that won't be on any of the regular editions (although it WILL be on the deluxe). So it's sort of exclusive to the EP, but not if someone wants to put out the change for the hardback book, special edition, which has everything. There is nothing left off. It's got 'Gettysburg' on the one CD and everything else on the other, including 'The Star Spangled Banner'. We couldn't fit them all on one disc; there's just too much music. SPV wants to work this EP in the video and radio markets. The idea was to put some of the more radio-friendly songs on there. 'The Reckoning' isn't really, but I wanted something to really kick people in the nuts, so they don't think we're going in some watered-down direction. When you listen to the album, as a whole, it's very dynamic, lots of heavy stuff and some strong, ballad-like songs. It just so happens three of the four on The Reckoning are more ballad-like."

What happened to the planned "free" bonus, of the epic 32-minute 'Gettysburg' (honoring the site of the bloodiest and ultimately decisive battle in America's civil war, where more than 50,000 died in only three days!) in 5.1 Dolby DVD sound?

"We talked about giving the bonus DVD audio, but it was impossible to do. There's too much music for one CD, so we would have had to make it two CDs, plus a DVD audio, which would have driven the price through the roof and we wouldn't have been able to enter the record into the charts in Europe. They have laws against giving away too much free shit and still considering it a $19.95 album or whatever. It gets into politics. Instead, the deluxe version is a hard-back book, which slides into a regular sized, cardboard slipcase. It's a very nice, high quality package."

Fear not, the proposed DVD format isn't dead in the water. "It will probably be four to six months later. Instead of just a DVD audio, it will be visual. When people listen back on their surround sound, or anyone who has a home entertainment system, will be blown away. While they're listening, there will be a video on the screen: part animation, part re-enacting footage. Not animation, like cartoons, but original Civil War photography built with Flash animation, doing some interesting things, telling the story. There are segments where Tim and I are playing in the peach orchards and on Little Roundtop, at Gettysburg.

Unlike the video shoot, the entire band made the trek to eastern Pennsylvania, for promotional photos, on the hallowed ground. "It will be unique," continues Jon. "It's probably got to be a double DVD, because we've got the theatrical mix, which focuses on the orchestra, and the 'metal mix,' which has the band louder, the guitars surrounding you more. On the other one will be a 'making of' with the Prague orchestra, me walking around the battlefield at Gettysburg, showing people the sites and monuments, talking about why I wrote about specific points. It will be something unique, for Iced Earth's first DVD. It won't be the typical concert."

ICED EARTH's forthcoming album, "The Glorious Burden", represents a ten-song musical enterprise honoring the valor and sacrifices that made the world what it is today. The band's ninth full-length album will be released through SPV Records on January 13, 2004.

Having only hinted at their infatuation with history in the past with "Ghost Of Freedom" (from 2001's "Horror Show") and "1776" (from 1998's "Something Wicked This Way Comes"), ICED EARTH felt it was time, in the wake of the last few years of international events, to remind the world where we originated. Guitarist and mastermind behind the ICED EARTH legacy, Jon Schaffer comments on the importance of this album, "In today's politically correct world, things aren't taught the way they should be, and the importance is not emphasized in the manner it should. So now you've got a bunch of people running around today who don't give a shit, and are spoiled brats who take for granted everything they have. It's quite disgusting sometimes when I see college students interviewed by Jay Leno who have no clue. It's very frightening. I'm hoping that somewhere we can inspire some of these kids and get them interested if your history teacher sucks and makes history boring, go and read some books on your own because it's far from boring. The sacrifices these hundreds of thousands of men made over the past 200 years is the reason these little brats can sit around playing video games all day and live pretty safe lives. I hope we can do some good with this record."

The title "The Glorious Burden" is a metaphor for band's endurance as well as statement towards America as a world power. As to what brought on this idea for a concept album, Schaffer admits that it has been a long time coming. "I've been a military history buff all my life. The bicentennial was a great time for me as both a history buff and a young kid, because I was literally obsessed with reading about the founding fathers and the American Revolution. I've always read history books far more than any fiction, but I never really put it into music before, with these kinds of emotions."

Schaffer's adoration with history has impacted him not only as a musician, but as a merchant as well. Adding to the "special" nature of this release, this version of "When The Eagle Cries" is exclusive to the single.

"The Glorious Burden" is ICED EARTH's first release with singer Tim Owens (ex-JUDAS PRIEST), who replaced Matt Barlow this past summer.

En tja, jon's mening is nog steeds dat iedereen vervangbaar is.Dus als iemand geen zin er meer in heeft heeft hij liever dat hij weggaat.

De zang van Ripper valt me nu achteraf 100% mee, ik had echt voor het ergste gevreesd toen ik hoorde dat hij nu bij Iced Earth zong met een topzanger als Matt Barlow als voorganger. Z'n stem past goed bij de muziek en in bijvoorbeeld The Reckoning klinkt'ie meer als Rob Halford dan hij ooit bij Judas Priest heeft gedaan.

Ik wacht met spanning op het album.

Ik ken eigenlijk vrij weinig, een nummer of 30. Ik heb geen albums van hun ofzo, wel een aantal gekopieerde Iced Earth-mixen.

Ik vind btw bij Iron Maiden Run To The Hills het mooiste.

Maar als je bv naar de oudere nummers luistert zul je merken dat het toch echt voornamelijk om de muziek gaat.
