Activision houdt rekening met een direct vervolg op Call of Duty: Black Ops. Volgens techwebsite Fusible heeft de game-uitgever domeinnamen geregistreerd waaruit dit blijkt. Het gaat onder meer om domeinnamen als callofdutyblackops3.com en codblackops4.com.
De uitgever heeft nog geen nieuwe Call of Duty aangekondigd. Volgens de techwebsite zou het ook kunnen dan het gamebedrijf een flater wil voorkomen. Vorig jaar had een willekeurige gamer de domeinnaam modernwarfare3.com geregistreerd, waarna hij op de website negatief sprak over het spel van Activision.
De kans is groot dat gamestudio Treyarch werkt aan een nieuw spel in de reeks. Treyarch en gamestudio Infinity Ward wisselen elkaar om het jaar af als het gaat om de productie van een Call of Duty-schietspel. Twee jaar geleden bracht Treyarch samen met Activision het schietspel Call of Duty: Black Ops op de markt.
Vorig jaar verdiende Activision in een recordtijd een miljard dollar met de verkoop van Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Daarnaast vormen drie spellen uit de Call of Duty-reeks de top drie populairste online spellen voor de Xbox 360. Als kers op de taart was Modern Warfare 3 vorig jaar de best verkochte game in de Benelux.
