Vulkaanuitbarsting in de Rode zee

Eruptions reader Sherine alerted me to a news story about a volcanic eruption in the Red Sea off Yemen. In the report, fisherman spotted 20-30 meter fountains of lava near Saba Island. Beyond this information (in Arabic), there is very little news on this eruption out there – however, I did check the OMI real time sulfur dioxide measurements and sure enough, there looks to be a small sulfur dioxide plume in the vicinity near Yemen (see below) –



specifically, it looks like Jebel at Tair (*location is unclear, like Jebel Zubair – see update above). This name should ring a bell, as the volcano erupted in 2007-8 and killed 7 Yemeni soldiers. Jebel at Tair is part of the rifting of the Red Sea, moving the Arabian Peninsula away from Africa and is one of the many volcanoes of the Arabian Peninsula region. The volcano has mixed explosive and effusive eruptions during its known history.

It seems like there is a lot of confusion about exactly where the eruption is taking place. A number of sources put the eruption at Jebel Zubair, another island volcano that is part of an archipelago that last erupted in 1824. Jebel Zubair is just to the south of Jebel at Tair, so looking at the OMI map (above) and the new MODIS image found by Eruptions reader Kirby that looks to have a small plume (see below), it is more likely Jebel Zubair. However, there is still not a lot of information out there on this eruption.

WASHINGTON - Voor de westkust van Jemen heeft zich een nieuw eiland gevormd na een vulkaanuitbarsting.

Dat heeft de Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA ontdekt op foto's van de aarde.

De NASA maakte de foto's al voor de kerst maar plaatste ze vrijdag op internet. Te zien is dat een witte rookwolk opstijgt in de Rode Zee en dat er een eiland ligt op een plek waar eerder alleen water te zien was.

Elke paar jaar komt er in de wereld een eiland bij door een vulkaanuitbarsting, weten experts. De meeste zijn echter niet stevig genoeg om de elementen te weerstaan. Het is dus afwachten hoe lang het eiland in de Rode Zee het volhoudt.

This new satellite image, acquired January 7, 2012, suggests that the eruption has risen nearly completely above water. A plume of steam, other volcanic gases, and ash spews from a distinct cone. The land surrounding the vent has grown, and is now about 530 by 710 meters (1,700 by 2,300 feet) across. Once above water, past eruptions in the Zubair Islands were primarily effusive, with relatively runny lava forming thin lava flows. In contrast to the fragmented rock that forms when lava interacts directly with water, lava that solidifies on land is tough, so this new island is likely to stick around.

In de Rode Zee is een nieuw, vulkanisch eiland opgedoken in slechts een paar dagen. Nabij de kust van Jemen verscheen plotseling een nieuw stukje Aarde.

De eilandvorming werd gespot door de NASA-satelliet Earth Observing-1. Eind december werd de eerste rookwolk uit de oceaan opgemerkt en nog geen week later, op 7 januari, vormde zich al een volledig eiland.

Volgens NASA is het stuk grond nu al “530 bij 710 meter in doorsnede”. Op de foto’s hiernaast is te zien hoe het eiland zich vormde. Rookwolken en vulkaangassen blazen nog steeds uit de oceaan
