Very strong winds will affect northern Britain on Wednesday, including the populated Central Lowlands of Scotland. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected, with 80 to 90 mph possible in exposed coastal areas of the west. The public should be aware that this could cause disruption to transport.

Gale force winds batter parts of Scotland

Areas of Scotland are being battered by gale force winds which have reached almost 90mph in places.

Forecasters have said that damage to buildings and disruption to transport services can be expected.

Transport Minister Keith Brown urged people to drive with caution.

A Met Office weather warning is in force until midnight on Wednesday. Gusts so far have reached 87mph on the Tay Bridge, 70mph on Tiree, 62mph in Oban and 48mph in Glasgow.

The Tay Road Bridge was closed to all traffic because of the severe winds but has reopened to cars only.

BBC Scotland weather forecaster Christopher Blanchett said: "The high winds are all part of a deep area of low pressure that will be sitting overhead by around midday.

"We'll see the winds at their peak between midday and 6pm, with gusts of around 60-70mph through Central and Southern Scotland.

"On exposed western coasts, from Ayrshire to Uist, we could see isolated gusts of 80-90mph.

"The impact of these winds is likely to be tree damage and tiles blown off roofs, flying debris, closure of bridges or roads, power cuts and damage to overhead rail power lines."

Ferry services have already been disrupted and Transport Scotland warned that exposed bridges could be closed to high-sided vehicles and double-deckers.

Power warning
Transport Minister Keith Brown told BBC Radio Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme: "The main problem, especially with high wind, is debris and trees falling on to power lines, and that can be a major problem.

"But we seem to be coping extremely well with that and let's hope we don't have too many more people cut off from supply over the next few days."

He said it was "very hard" for the power companies to prevent disruption caused by the windy weather, adding: "What they have to do is make sure they can respond to it as quickly as possible."

For most areas, the strongest winds will be from late morning and through the afternoon, although the eastern Highlands and north-east Scotland will see the strongest winds during the evening.

The winds will be accompanied by blustery showers which will be heavy and prolonged over west and central Scotland, with snow on hills.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has 12 flood warnings in place for areas around Tayside.

It also has several flood alerts in place around the country. Some low impact coastal flooding could occur on exposed western and northern coasts from Ayrshire and Arran to Shetland.

Met Eireann issues severe weather warning
Wednesday, December 28, 2011 - 11:25 AM

Met Eireann has issued a severe weather warning for today and tomorrow with winds expected to reach up to 140 kilometres per hour in places.

Parts of Connacht and Ulster will be worst affected with flooding likely along coastal counties.

Motorists are being advised to watch out for fallen debris and trees on roads.

The stormy weather throughout today means pedestrians need to take extra care and wear high visibility fluorescent clothing.

Noel Brett from The Road Safety Authority said: "We've had an appalling 48 hours on Irish roads, so really just double the appeal to people to take responsibility for the way in which they use the road.

"If they are out there as a pedestrian, to make sure they are visible, to use footpaths where they are provided, to walk facing oncoming traffic.

"And if out socialising late at night and into the early hours of the morning, to make sure they have a safe way home, wheather its by taxi or hackney or designated driver."

90mph winds and heavy rain batters Scotland
The Met Office issued warnings across large parts of central and western parts of Scotland to 'be prepared' on Wednesday.

Severe winds of up to 90mph and heavy rain is battering parts of Scotland causing travel disruption and warning of floods.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for residents across large parts of central and western parts of Scotland to "be prepared" for high winds throughout Wednesday.

The Forth Road Bridge was closed to all vehicles except cars and the Skye Bridge was closed to high sided vehicles because of the severe weather, while several ferry services in the Western Isles were cancelled on Wednesday during the latest round of powerful gusts to hit the country in recent weeks.

On Wednesday morning strong winds forced the closure of the Tay Road Bridge to all vehicles, before it reopened to cars only in the afternoon.

The Met Office said the worst affected areas are the Strathclyde region, the Highlands, Lothian and the Border and central Scotland.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency had nine flood warnings in place for several parts of the River Tummel in Pertshire on Wednesday because of heavy rainfall.

Several major road bridges were battered by the winds, which the Met Office said reached between 60 to 70mph in lowland areas and up to 90mph in more exposed coastal regions.

Traffic Scotland warned motorists using the Erskine Bridge, Perth’s Friarton Bridge, the Clackmannanshire Bridge and the Kessock Bridge in the Highlands to take care due to the winds.

Football fixtures were also affected by the severe weather as Motherwell FC had to call off their game against Dunfermline on Wednesday night because of storm damage at Fir Park caused by the winds.

Caledonian MacBrayne cancelled at least five of its Hebridean ferry services, with sailings to Barra, South Uist and Lewis among those affected by the severe weather on Wednesday morning.

Attractions have also been hit, with Edinburgh Castle forced to close because of the high winds.

Motorists on the A93 Braemar to Cairnwell road in Aberdeenshire are being urged to use extreme caution as driving snow and high winds are making driving difficult.

The A890 Lochcarron to Kyle road in the Highlands is expected to remain closed until at least December 30 after a landslide caused 100 tonnes of rock to tumble onto the road.

All other roads in the north of Scotland are open, but affected by very high winds.

High winds are causing disruption at airports at Barra, Campbeltown, Islay, Stornoway and Tiree and passengers are being urged to call their airlines before travelling.

STV weatherman Sean Batty said: "Winds will peak across central and western Scotland around 3pm. They are expected to reach around 80-90mph in exposed parts of the west and over the bridges, including Erskine, Tay and Forth.

"Winds elsewhere will reach up to 70mph and this will possibly cause structural damage.

"While the far north of Scotland escapes the worst this afternoon the winds are expected to gust up to 70mph during this evening across the Northern Isles."

He added: "Widespread disruption is expected for holiday travellers travelling by ferry on Wednesday.

"The winds will ease off on Thursday but it will still be windy. Widespread sleet and snow showers are expected across the north and north west on Thursday afternoon."

Earlier this month roads were blocked, properties damaged and thousands were sent home from school and work as strong gusts of up to 120mph hit Scotland.

Land, Sea & Air travel left reeling by Scotland storm
SEVERE winds of nearly 90mph and heavy rain battered parts of Scotland yesterday, causing widespread travel disruption for commuters returning to work after the Christmas holidays.

Bridges were closed to traffic and a host of ferry services and flights were scrapped due to the gale-force winds, while tourist attractions and sporting fixtures fell foul of the weather.

Flooding and fallen trees caused problems on roads across the country, although a return to the chaos of earlier this month, when gusts of up to 120mph caused widespread damage and disruption, did not come to pass.

Conditions are expected to improve in the lead up to Hogmanay, although the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for the Highlands, Orkney and Shetland for today, with very strong north-westerly winds forecast, possibly causing travel disruption.

According to the Met Office, winds in Scotland reached a high hourly mean speed of 136mph yesterday, a figure recorded at the Cairngorms summit. Speeds of 109mph were recorded at the top of Aonach Mor and 87mph in Glen Ogle.

On lower ground, gusts reached 76mph on Loch Glascarnock, 70mph on Tiree, 67mph in Oban, 60mph in Glasgow, and 53mph in Edinburgh.

The conditions prompted the Met Office to issue five amber warnings spanning the majority of the country, with yellow warnings issued for Grampian and Orkney and Shetland.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) put out 13 flood warnings, 12 of which covered the Tayside region, with an additional 13 flood alerts spanning the whole of the country.

The Forth Road Bridge, the Skye Bridge, Erskine Bridge, Friarton Bridge and Kessock Bridge were closed to high-sided vehicles because of the wind.

Fierce winds caused the closure of the Tay Road Bridge to all vehicles in the morning before it re-opened to cars later in the afternoon.

Warnings were also issued by Traffic Scotland to motorists using Clackmannanshire Bridge.

On the roads, the A78 was closed between the Eglinton Terrace junction in Skelmorlie and the A760 Dalry Road junction in Largs, because of flooding.

The A83 in Inverneill was closed in both directions between the Inverneill junction and the Ardrishaig junction because of a fallen tree.

In Rutherglen, a fallen tree also led to the closure of the B759 Cathkin Road in both directions between the A749 East Kilbride Road junction and the Waterside Road junction.

The A890 was closed in both directions between the A87 junction in Auchtertyre and the A896 junction in Strathcarron due to a landslip.

In Glasgow, a dangerous building led to the closure of Glassford Street and Hutcheson Street between Argyle Street and Ingram Street. Stockwell Street at Clyde Street was closed for a period to all traffic due to a dangerous building, with diversions put in place. It re-opened at around 1:30pm.

Several ferry services in the Western Isles and the Clyde were also cancelled. Caledonian MacBrayne stopped the vast majority of its scheduled sailings, with 19 services scrapped due to the adverse weather.

Those that survived – Oban to Lochboisdale, Colintraive to Rhubodach, Oban to Tiree, Largs to Cumbrae Slip, and Sconser to Raasay – were subject to disruptions and delays.

A Cal Mac spokesman said: “High winds have severely affected services across out network with the majority of sailings now cancelled and the few remaining on more sheltered routes subject to delay or disruption.”

The Northlink Ferries evening crossing from Aberdeen to Kirkwall was cancelled, with services from Lerwick to Kirkwall and Kirkwall to Aberdeen also scrapped. The firm also experienced disruption to its services from Stromness to Scrabster. Today’s 6:30am sailing from Stromness and 8:45am from Scrabster were under review as of yesterday evening.

The Argyll Ferries service between Gourock and Dunoon was also subject to disruption due to the weather, with sailings reduced to an hourly service. P&O services in the Irish Sea, which were carrying many fans to last night’s Old Firm game, were running to schedule.

A number of flights to and from island airports were also cancelled. They included British Airways flights from Glasgow to Barra and Campbeltown, and the FlyBe flight from Glasgow to Donegal. An afternoon BA flight from Tiree to Glasgow was cancelled, while FlyBe’s later flight from Barra was also called off.

Meanwhile, ScotRail services suffered delays as a result of the extreme weather, with trains in the Crianlarich area hardest hit.

Many Scottish attractions were also forced to close, with Edinburgh Castle shutting as a result of the high winds.

In Glasgow, shoppers ran for cover in Sauchiehall Street when a pane of glass fell 40 feet from a window. Emergency services attended just before 10am to find the pedestrian thoroughfare covered in glass, although no-one was injured. In the city’s George Square, the ice rink, funfair and big wheel were closed as a safety precaution.

Football fixtures were affected by the severe weather. Motherwell FC had to call off their game against Dunfermline last night because of storm damage at Fir Park caused by the winds.

The decision to scrap the Scottish Premier League match was taken due to safety reasons after Motherwell’s stadium suffered structural damage. The fixture has been rescheduled for 7:45pm on 24 January.

Motherwell’s chief executive, Leeann Dempster, said: “We were obviously desperate to get the game on, but there has been significant structural damage to the ground that could have posed a risk to supporters. So with that in mind, we have agreed with Dunfermline to postpone the fixture and replay it at the earliest opportunity.”

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said that amber weather warnings for much of Scotland were to remain in place until midnight last night, but added conditions were due to turn milder.

“On Thursday there will be a lot of showers around turning wintry on higher ground,” she said.

“Through Friday, a front will move through meaning it will be unsettled and slightly milder than conditions we’ve had.

“Into Saturday, it will be more cloudy with outbreaks of rain, but it will still be quite windy and mild. Sunday will be another breezy day with showers in the west and north.”
