The 2011 Grand National (known as the John Smith's Grand National for sponsorship reasons) will be the 164th annual renewal of the world-famous Grand National class 1 horse race at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, England. The main race will be held at 4:15pm BST on 9 April 2011 and a maximum field of 40 runners will compete for prize money totalling a record £950,000.
Race card: The final list of 40 runners and four reserves will be declared on the morning of 7 April 2011.
On 2 February 2011 Aintree released the names of 102 horses submitted to enter, including 34 Irish-trained and three French-trained horses. Ten are trained by Paul Nicholls, including a leading contender in Niche Market; nine are handled by Irish trainer Willie Mullins, and three by Jonjo O'Neill. Ballabriggs, another leading contender, is trained by Donald McCain, the son of four-time National winner Ginger McCain.
20 contenders were withdrawn in the first scratchings. After a second scratchings deadline on 24 March, 74 horses remained on the list of entrants, with the top weight of 11 st 10 lb allocated to last year's winner Don't Push It. The official odds on 24 March placed Mullins-trained The Midnight Club at 10/1 favourite. Backstage and Oscar Time were given joint-second favourite odds of 12/1.
On 4 April, following the publication of jockeys' probable mounts at the start of the five-day confirmation stage it appeared that the 2011 National could be record-breaking before the start. Nine further withdrawals since the second scratchings left a total of 65 contenders still in the running to compete. The 2011 National is set to be the first with two female jockeys competing (Nina Carberry, sister of 1999 winner Paul Carberry, and Katie Walsh, sister of 2000 and 2005 winner Ruby Walsh) whilst Carberry will become the first female to take a third ride in the race. Six amateur jockeys compete in total, a record in recent years. Official odds on favourite The Midnight Club were cut to 8/1, while What A Friend replaced Oscar Time as a joint-second favourite on odds of 11/1 with Backstage.
