The color could best be described as "red-auburn". Many people with "red hair" actually have hair this color. Crushed and ground powder is, yes, yellow, but most people think of the root, and therefore associate red/orange/red-auburn with ginger.
Red-heads in Australia are called blue, you know. It's because vegetable with a orange or yellow color (squash, pumpkin, etc) are called "blue vegetables". So even if a person's hair isn't the exact same color as a pumpkin or a squash, they're still given the name of a pumpkin or a squash.
