(Reuters) - Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi drove tanks into the center of rebel-held Misrata on Sunday, residents said, two days after President Barack Obama demanded they pull back from the city.

Local people in Misrata, the only big rebel stronghold left in the west of Libya, said Western air strikes overnight hit pro-Gaddafi forces at their base south of the city, but that did not halt their attacks.

"There is fighting between the rebels and the Gaddafi forces. Their tanks are in the center of Misrata," Abdelbasset, a spokesman for the rebels, said by telephone from the city. "There are so many casualties that we cannot count them."

"He (Gaddafi) is using a scorched earth strategy. Burning and destroying everything in his way," said Abdelbasset.

It was impossible to verify accounts from Misrata because the Libyan authorities have prevented journalists from reaching the city. There was no immediate comment from Libyan officials.

Gaddafi's forces -- including units of the 32nd brigade commanded by his son Khamis -- have been laying siege to Misrata for days, residents have said, but until Sunday rebel fighters had kept them confined to the city's outskirts.

lastig.. hoe kunnen we die mensen in misrata nou helpen? Iedereen zit nu in de stad, dus het westen had toch eerder in moeten grijpen?

Net als de russen die het ook over 48 doden hebben en eisen dat de luchtaanvallen stoppen.

Khadaffi verkocht al olie aan het Westen voor redelijke prijzen. Khadaffi was verworden tot een nuttige en ongevaarlijke dictator.

Update (15:52) De Amerikaanse stafchef Michael Mullen zegt dat Qatar zijn gevechtsvliegtuigen in positie heeft gebracht. Tot dusver is Qatar het enige Arabische land dat militair mee doet aan de operatie, maar Mullen zegt dat er meer zijn die dat willen. Ik zou graag zien dat zij zich publiekelijk committeren aan de missie, zegt hij in een interview met CBS. (Reuters)

Opmerkelijk dat Misrata nog steeds geen support heeft gehad.

Yesterday, I have 25, today, since morning I have three and they are coming. They are amputations... severe injuries, crushing - I don't know what they are using but please, come and protect the civilians - babies, women, all the civilians that is coming here, they have no...water, no food."

De meerderheid in Libië zit volgens mij ook helemaal niet te wachten op deze interventie. Het Westen heeft zich laten misleiden op basis van wat (inmiddels weer ingetrokken) steunbetuigingen uit de Arabische wereld en 'n groepje gewapende opstandelingen met 'No-fly zone'-spandoeken.

Eerst laat het Westen Khadaffi alle rebellen vermoorden, daarna gaat het Westen Khadaffi's leger vermoorden > iedereen dood in Libië > Al het olie voor het Westen

Arab League backs no-fly zone in Libya

The Arab League voted Saturday to back a no-fly zone in Libya and is asking that the U.N. Security Council impose the measure, officials of the regional body told reporters.

"It has one goal: To protect the civilian population," Amre Moussa, the body's secretary-general said.

"We will inform the U.N. Security Council of our request to enforce a no-fly zone over Libya," Moussa said. "The U.N. Security Council should decide how it will be enforced."

Oh god o god, hier wordt ik zo schijtziek van!

You damned if you do, damned if you don't

Weken lang lopen ze te klagen dat het westen niet de morele verantwoordelijkheid neemt om in te grijpen. De VS is inderdaad terughoudend en zegt dat een no-fly zone technisch lastig is te handhaven, en veel bombardementen vereist. Uiteindelijk gaat men overstag. Gaan ze aan de slag, krijgen ze weer kritiek! Dat ze teveel bombarderen, wat ze al weken lopen te zeggen dat dit noodzakelijk is. Zitten ze bij de Arab League te slapen ofzo?

Inderdaad, de meerderheid in Libië zit te wachten tot ome Muamar met zijn tanks hun huis binnenrijdt om de hele familie af te slachten, dat denk ik ook ....

indd. ik zit er nu ook al een paar uur op te wachten , maar er zijn nieuwe vliegtuigen in postite gebracht , ik vermoed -hoop- dat ze nu Misurata gaan helpen

Hilarisch. Het lijkt net of jij het begin van deze opstand hebt gemist. Vrijwel alle steden waarin in handen van de opstandelingen. Totdat Gaddafi militair geweld ging gebruiken. In de regio Benghazi is al eerder een opstand de kop in gedrukt.
