More than 55 homes have been destroyed by bushfires that have swept through neighbourhoods of the western Australian city of Perth.

The most serious blaze in the Roleystone area began around midday on Sunday and is thought to have been sparked by someone using a mechanical grinder.
A second fire started when a tree branch that was blown down by strong winds hit electricity infrastructure, authorities said.
By late on Sunday firefighters were battling the two blazes on the outskirts of Perth - but could not save 59 homes from the flames.

Officials said one firefighter was injured and several people were treated for smoke inhalation.
Residents tried to keep the blaze at bay with hoses, but eventually authorities told them to abandon their properties.

The manager of one centre, Anne Leishmann, said: "Some people are very distressed because we've heard that there are 30 to 50 houses lost.
