BANGKOK - Waarzeggers hebben gezorgd voor flink wat lege hotelkamers op het Thaise schiereiland Phuket. De waarzeggers hebben een nieuwe tsunami voorspeld voor de regio. Op Tweede Kerstdag 2004 zorgde een grote vloedgolf voor ruim 230.000 doden in Thailand en andere landen.

„De afgelopen weken zijn afzeggingen binnengekomen vanuit het eigen land”, aldus directrice Bangornrat Shinaprayoon van het Thaise toerismebureau dinsdag. Ze benadrukte dat Phuket steeds voorbereid is. Het gebied heeft vroege waarschuwingssystemen en oefent regelmatig evacuaties.

De hotelbranche van Phuket zegt dat Aziatische toeristen steeds opbellen en vragen of er een tsunami is: „Dit is het hoogseizoen, eigenlijk moeten 80 procent van de kamers bezet zijn. Maar momenteel is dat 60 procent”, zei een woordvoerder.

Phuket telt rond Kerstmis veel Europese toeristen.

This came after famous Thai astrologer Warin Buawiratlert predicted Tsunami disaster this month similar to the one in 2004 which killed more than 5,000 people including over 2,700 foreign tourists.

The December 26, 2004 Tsunami was the first to hit the region in more than 100 years. It was triggered by the strong earthquake measuring 9.8 off the northern coast of Sumatra.

The prediction of tsunami has sparked fear among tourists. Hotels in Phuket has reported more than 10 per cent cancellation for December following the prediction. Even though experts are saying that the chances of another tsunami are very small, thousands of tourists have decided to cancel their trips.

Apart from Phuket, hotels in Phangnga, Ranong and Surin are also reporting cancellations of up to 10 per cent. Hotel Owners are furious with Warin Buawiratlert for making such irresponsible prediction. They are saying that the prediction itself has hit the tourism industry with a Tsunami as tourists are scared to travel in the region.
