Deadliest fire known in Israel: Firefighters battled a large blaze Thursday in the Carmel Forest near Haifa, which left dozens dead and brought life to a halt for many communities.
Prison guards who came to the rescue of the prisoners paid with their lives: 40 guards on their way to Damon Prison were burned alive. MDA set up a first aid mobile unit but began its evacuation since no injured were left on scene. Ynet follows this unfolding story live.

A forest fire in northern Israel killed about 40 people today, the country's national rescue service said.
Fire crews, assisted by planes dropping water, are still struggling to contain the blaze, which is raging across the Carmel mountains near Haifa. Many of the deaths occurred when a bus evacuating people from the area went up in flames, the rescue service said.
Authorities cleared the Carmel Forest area of hundreds of people, including some 500 Palestinian inmates from the Damon prison, after the fire broke out early today. The bus was carrying some 50 prison guards when it flipped over and got caught in the flames, according to Haaretz.
The fire broke out near the Druze village of Osafia, the Jerusalem Post reported. Haifa university, a hotel, farm and residential properties were evacuated, according to Israeli media. Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze. Israel experienced an especially hot summer and has had little rain this winter.
"This large fire has spread due to strong winds," the Haifa district police deputy superintendent, Ahuva Mishne, told Israel Radio. "The winds are blowing in the direction of the sea, so there is no real concern for the [nearby] villages."
Hier hebben ze het erover dat de bewakers werden geevacueerd in plaats van op weg om gevangenen te helpen.
Dat klinkt ook wat logischer in de oren want volgens mij laten ze niet snel een bus met nieuwe mensen een bosbrand binnen rijden. En al helemaal geen brandweer.
Ook andere bronnen hebben het over evacuees.
Wat niet wegneemt dat het tragisch is natuurlijk.

The fire was spreading early Friday, with flames reaching the entrance to the Druze village of Isfiya as well as an IDF prison evacuated earlier. Firefighting teams were battling the blaze at both sites. The fire also reached the northern town of Tirat Carmel, whose residents were evacuated earlier. Police officials asked residents not to return to their homes at this time.

Ja bosbranden.. Vervelend. Tragisch voor de familie van de doden. Verder valt er weinig over te zeggen.
Hoorde gister op het journaal dat Israel hulp wil van het buitenland om de bosbranden tegen te gaan.

DEN HAAG - Nederland stuurt vier blushelikopters van de luchtmacht naar Isral om de bosbranden in het noorden van dat land te bestrijden. Dat hebben de ministers Uri Rosenthal (Buitenlandse Zaken) en Hans Hillen (Defensie) vrijdag besloten.
De transporthelikopters van het type Cougar en Chinook vertrekken zaterdag naar Isral, waar ze naar verwachting maandag aankomen. Onder de helikopters worden flexibele watercontainers gehangen. De 'fire bucket' van de Cougar bevat 2500 liter water, die van de Chinook bijna 10.000 liter. Er gaan drie Cougars en een Chinook naar Isral, aldus Defensie.
Door de brand, die donderdag ontstond, zijn al meer dan veertig mensen om het leven gekomen. Speciale blusvliegtuigen uit onder meer Griekenland, Cyprus en Azerbeidzjan zijn al in Isral aangekomen om te helpen blussen.
