Evacuaties rond Filipijnse vulkaan

33 quakes rock Mt.Bulusan
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 33 volcanic earthquakes related to Mt. Bulusan’s volcanic activity on Monday.

It said one of the recorded quakes was an explosion type that accompanied the ash emission at 7:22 a.m. last Sunday.

A two-kilometer ash column coupled by a grayish steam was monitored last Nov. 21, obscuring the volcano’s summit for most of the day.

During the early morning on Monday, a weak emission of white steam from the volcano’s crater and known thermal vents was observed.

The alert status around Mt. Bulusan remained at Level 1, which means that the public is not allowed to enter the four-kilometer radius of the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions.

Earlier, volcanologist Julio Sabit said more explosions are expected tooccur in the coming days due to the volcano’s recent reactivation.

But he said there are no indications that there will be a strong explosion similar to Mt. Bulusan’s activity in 2006-2007.

Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents located in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are advised to take precautions against ash falls.

Phivolcs advised civil aviation authorities to warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircraft.

Furthermore, residents near valleys and river/stream channels should be watchful against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar because ash and other loose volcanic materials may be remobilized during heavy and prolonged rainfall

More quakes around Bulusan Volcano
MANILA, Philippines (PNA) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) through its seismic network around Bulusan Volcano has recorded three volcanic earthquakes during the 24-hour observation period as Alert Level 1 remains in effect.

In its Volcano update for Friday, November 26, 2010, Phivolcs observed moderate white steam plume that rose to about 150 m above the NW vent drifting southwest.

Meanwhile, weak to moderate emission of white steam plume from the volcano’s crater and other known thermal vents were also noted.

With Alert Level 1, the public is reminded not to venture inside the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions.

Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents located in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are advised to take precautions against ashfalls.

Civil aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircrafts.

Furthermore, residents near valleys and river/stream channels should be watchful against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars because ash and other loose volcanic materials may be remobilized during heavy and prolonged rainfall.

The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) through Phivolcs is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s activity and any new significant development will be immediately relayed to all concerned particularly the media.

Bulusan erupts twice during 24 hour period
Philippine seismologists issued an alert on Mount Bulusan Sunday after the Luzon Island volcano erupted twice during a 24-hour period, according to a bulletin released by the nation's volcano-monitoring agency.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) said the eruptions posed little threat to the villages surrounding the Luzon Island volcano. Most of the villages lie outside the 4-kilometer (2 1/2-mile) danger zone, the bulletin stated.

Philippine volcanologists, according to the agency, aren't expecting Mount Bulusan to erupt again soon. The volcano is located about 249 kilometers (155 miles) southeast of Manila.

The area immediately surrounding the Bulusan Volcano is mostly rural. There are several villages, but most are outside the danger zone, according to PHILVOCS. The most recent eruption, which took place before dawn local time on Sunday lasted about 20 minutes, according to the agency.

In declaring an "Alert Level 1," the agency warned nearby residents not to enter the 4-kilometer "permanent danger zone" because of possible steam and ash explosions. Area residents were also warned of the possibility of flooding if heavy rains push sediment-filled streams out of their banks.

2000 evacuated after Bulusan spews ash
JUBAN,Sorsogon - Two thousand affected residents around Mt. Bulusan were evacuated immediately after the latest ash explosion at around 9:30 a.m. Monday, a military official said.

Lt. Col. Santiago Enginco, commanding officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion based in Juban town, said he immediately deployed 5 military vehicles to assist the evacuation at around 10 a.m.

“We have transported about 50 families numbering around 150 people from Puting Sapa village to the designated evacuation center in Cogon Elementary School in Juban town; 300 families in Irosin town,” said Enginco.

Enginco revealed that the volcano spewed ash and thick smoke more or less 2-kilometers above the sky, which lasted about twenty minutes. He said the ash explosion was blown by the wind towards a southeastern direction, affecting some areas in the towns of Juban, Irosin and Bulan.

“I received reports from my soldiers in Bulan town that thick smoke and ashfall have blanketed the area at around 10:30 a.m.,” said Enginco in a statement.

Soldiers assigned in Masbate City reported that some parts of the island-province were also affected by ashfall.

Classes in the affected areas (Juban, Irosin and Bulan) were suspended by the Department of Education after evacuees took shelter in school grounds and facilities.

Joena Gupit of DWBS FM in Bulan town said that at least 38 young students suffered breathing problems due to the thick ashfall and smoke. She gave the list of reported suffocation incidents in the following areas: 20 in Gallanosa High School in Irosin town, 10 in Bulan National High School and 8 in Alcova Elementary School in the same town.

“We need facemasks especially for the children here in our town. Mayor Helen Rose De Castro has ordered the distribution of facemasks this morning,” said Gupit who called by phone.

“We don’t have electricity here in the area today. There is no phone signal for Globe. I don’t know exactly why these services were hampered since this morning and I’m worried that we can’t drink our contaminated water supply too,” added Gupit.

Mayor Jimmy Fragata of Juban town said that the 49th Infantry Battalion has facilitated the evacuation of the affected residents from Putting Sapa village towards Cogon village as local authorities hoisted Alert Level 1.

He said that the volcano has calmed down and the evacuees are on standby for possible transport back to their village.

“I have told the evacuees to stay at the evacuation center for a while to prevent respiratory diseases especially for the young children. When the area in the village is clear of ash fall within today, I will coordinate for their return back to their homes,” he said in a phone call to Major Harold Cabunoc, 9ID spokesperson.

In November last year, a series of ash explosions triggered the evacuation of thousands of residents and the series of simulated disaster response operations involving 30 military trucks coming from the 9th Infantry Division.

Major General Ruperto Pabustan has directed the 903rd Brigade under Colonel Felilx Castro and the 49th Infantry Battalion, which is under its control, to take charge in the evacuation missions within the 4km permanent danger zone (PDZ). Noel Alamar, radio dzMM

Child dies under volcanic ash cloud in Philippines

MANILA — Philippine health authorities handed out face masks to thousands of residents around an erupting volcano on Wednesday after a child died of an asthma attack blamed on falling ash, officials said.

Bulusan volcano spewed a huge ash column on Monday, sending thousands of people fleeing their homes. More than 700 remained at evacuation centres Wednesday awaiting advice on when it is safe to return, aid officials said.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said it handed out some 6,000 dust masks to residents of Irosin, one of three towns affected by the ashfall, including nearly 500 people at an evacuation centre there.

The health ministry meanwhile distributed face masks in the nearby town of Bulan, where a two-year-old boy died from an asthma attack aggravated by ashfalls caused by the eruption, it said in a statement.

Government doctors are checking the medical condition of people in affected areas, it added.

Volcanic ash can cause nose, throat, eye and skin irritation as well as contaminate tap water, while prolonged exposure can cause lung disease, according to the health ministry.

Government volcanologists said they had recorded one volcanic quake in the 1,559-metre (5,115-foot) volcano in the past 24 hours, but thick clouds hampered visual observations of further steam and ash emissions.

The government said human activity has been banned within four kilometres (2.5 miles) of its crater as a precaution.

Bulusan is among 23 active volcanoes in the Philippines, which is located in the so-called Ring of Fire of volcanic activity around the Pacific.

Bulusan, 360 kilometres southeast of Manila, last erupted between March and June of 2006.

The volcano also shot ash into the air in November last year, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

However volcanologists said this was not an eruption, but heated ash deposits near the crater mouth that exploded and burst out on contact with rainwater.

Philippine scientists warn of more volcano explosions

MANILA -- Philippine scientists on Tuesday warned of more explosions from a restive volcano that has been spewing ash for two days after nearly three months of inactivity.

More than 100,000 people were affected by Monday's two ash explosions at Mount Bulusan volcano in Sorsogon province, 250 kilometers southeast of Manila.

At least 2,000 were forced to flee their homes in three towns at the foot of Mount Bulusan, according to civil defense authorities.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it had recorded 16 volcanic earthquakes since the ash explosions started Monday.

“Entry to the 4-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited since the area is at risk of sudden steam and ash explosions,” the institute warned.

“Civil and aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano's summit,” it added.

Heavy rains push Bulusan lahar, huge rocks into Irosin river

SORSOGON CITY, Philippines – Despite a relatively calm Mt. Bulusan, lahar started to flow down its slopes into a river in Irosin town on Sunday, hours after the rain that began Saturday night.

Close to 100,000 residents in slopes around the volcano, particularly in Irosin and Juban, feared flash floods in case torrential rains followed.

But Crispulo Diolita Jr., volcanologist at the Bulusan Observatory Center based in Cabid-an, Sorsogon City, told the INQUIRER on the phone on Sunday that the lahar flows were still confined to the Rangas River channel.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and local officials rushed to Rangas River in Barangay Cogon, Irosin, on Sunday morning due to reports of heavy lahar flow triggered by the rain.

Lahar and other volcanic sediments started flowing from the slopes of Mt. Bulusan at 10 a.m. on Sunday, causing widespread fear of lahar overflowing to residential areas close to the river system.

“We were alarmed because what we see were mostly lahar, sand and big rocks cascading down the slopes of the volcano at a velocity of about 70 kilometers per hour. There were minimal water component compared to the previous lahar flows in November and December,” said Roniel Frayna, a resident of the village of Cogon located at the foot of the volcano.

Government volcanologists earlier warned of lahar flows in the event of a downpour as tons of ashes and other volcanic debris were deposited along the slopes of the Cogon gully.

Mt. Bulusan dumped some 700,000 cubic meters of debris in an ash explosion on Feb. 21, adding to the stockpile from previous explosions since Nov. 6. 2010

13 volcanic quakes near Bulusan in last 24 hours
At least 13 volcanic quakes were recorded around restive Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon in the last 24 hours, state volcanologists said Monday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quakes were "lahar-related" — a day after lahar flows affected water supply in parts of Sorsogon.

"Bulusan Volcano’s seismic network recorded 13 lahar-related seismic signals during the past 24 hours. Steaming activity was not observed due to thick clouds covering the active vents and summit crater. Continuous heavy rain over Bulusan Volcano yesterday saturated loosely deposited ash and rock fragments and generated small lahar flows to roll down the slopes of the volcano then flowed along river channels," Phivolcs said on its website.

It said channel-confined lahar flows were observed along Cogon and Monbon river channels.

Other than that, it said no other significant volcanic activity was observed since the last ash explosion on Feb. 21.

Earlier, a separate report on dzBB radio said lahar flows triggered by heavy rains Sunday affected the supply of drinking water in some parts of Sorsogon.

The dzBB report said residents in the affected areas had to walk as far as three kilometers to get drinking water.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said Bulusan's status remains at Alert Level 1, meaning the source of activity is hydrothermal and shallow.

"Entry to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited, since the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions," it said.

Also, it advised residents in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ashfalls.

Civil aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may be hazardous to aircraft, it said.

Also, it advised people living near valleys and river/stream channels to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall.

Bulusan activity back to life?
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday warned the residents living near Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon not to enter the implemented 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone.

In an interview with radio dzMM, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said the residents should remain vigilant because Mt. Bulusan showed volcanic activities in the last 2 weeks.

Solidum said the volcanic activities were above normal and there were 10 seismic earthquakes recorded.

In a ground survey that was conducted, Solidum said the authorities detected a change in land form surrounding the volcano.

Solidum said that because of this, it is possible that there will be an ash explosion.

Phivolcs also requested the Civil Aviation Authority to remind the pilots to avoid flying near the crater of the volcano.
