Former "Deadliest Catch" star Capt. Phil Harris -- who died in February -- has officially been honored with the corniest memorial ever ... a giant maze constructed in his likeness ... on a corn field.


According to sources at Rutledge Corn Maze -- a company that builds a different corn maze on their property every year as an amusement attraction -- "The Captain Phil Harris Memorial Maze" was made to honor the late fisherman for his contributions to the local community.

The name of Phil's crab fishing vessel -- the Cornelia Marie -- is also immortalized in the Tumwater, Washington corn field.

According to the Rutledge website, the grand opening for the maze is scheduled for September 11 ... and Phil's two sons -- also on the Discovery Channel show -- are expected to be there.

Deadliest Catch captains have reportedly left the popular Discovery series

In a shocking development involving Discovery’s popular reality show about crab fisherman, Deadliest Catch stars Sig Hansen and Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand have reportedly left the show. The trio sent this statement to the Hollywood Reporter Tuesday: “We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in Deadliest Catch. It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive Catch fans we have met over the years.”

A Discovery spokesman said a statement from the cable network is forthcoming.

Earlier this month, the Hillstrands were sued by Discovery over their involvement in a Catch spinoff. Discovery reportedly claims that the brothers failed to finish work on Hillstranded and is now seeking $3 million in damages. An attorney for the Hillstrands shot back by saying the lawsuit may force the men to sell their boats and fire their crews. Hansen decided to show solidarity for his fellow captains and backed the Hillstrands.

It’s unclear what the departures mean for the seventh season of the show, which is set to resume production next month. The first episode is supposed to include a scene in which the sons of the late Capt. Phil Harris scatter his ashes off of Dutch Harbor near Alaska. Harris’ tragic death helped Catch lure its biggest audience ever during the show’s sixth season.

Jake en Josh Harris hebben getekend voor een zevende seizoen van de dodelijkste Catch.

Het is echter nog onduidelijk of de gebroeders Harris weer aan het werk zullen gaan op de Cornelia Marie.
De Cornelia Marie zal misschien geen deel gaan uitmaken in Seizoen 7, Discovery Channel wilde verder geen informatie vrijgeven.

My mother, Cornelia Devlin and our crew flew to Kodiak, Alaska on Saturday. The FV Cornelia Marie is tied up in Kodiak, our home port since the boat was built. The crew has been repairing the boat in preparation to go King Crab fishing. This year’s crew is the same one you saw during the last couple episodes of season six. Derrick Ray is the skipper, Steve Ward is the Engineer and Josh Harris, Jake Harris, Ryan Simpson and Freddie Maughtai are the deckhands.

Captain Derrick is eager to get to Dutch Harbor and may pull out of Kodiak this evening. We have a tremendous amount of work before King Crab season opens on October 15th.

There was serious doubts as to whether the FV Cornelia Marie would be able to continue fishing. Our boat and crew has faced many challenges this year. After the death of our skipper, our collective families were in a tailspin. Captain Phil was more than just a skipper. He was part owner and responsible for everything having to do with the boat. He has left a void which has not been filled. But, his sons Jake and Josh have vowed to keep the FV Cornelia Marie fishing.

One thing that hasn’t changed since the beginning is the support we receive from fans of the FV Cornelia Marie. We all thank you so much for your kindness. I will continue to update you on our progress.

That didn't take long! Good thing they wised and realized having a TV show is more profitable than a fishing boat!

Though the captains went through a bit of a legal battle with the Discovery network, Deadliest Catch stars Sig Hansen and Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand will be back to work on their popular show next week in Alaska. Discovery released a statement in regards to the matter, on behalf of the cast, saying

“We’re happy we worked everything out with Discovery. A deal’s a deal. We’re heading up to Dutch Harbor to start filming the new season of Deadliest Catch and hopefully it will be the best one yet.”

The Hillstrands added in their own statement in regards to their separate Discovery special:

“Everyone worked really hard on putting together Hillstranded and we’re looking forward to wrapping that up. It’s something new that we hope people will enjoy.”

Glad it all could be work out, boys! Thankfully, you didn't rock the boat hard enough that you all ended up with nothing!

After quitting Deadliest Catch, Captains Andy Hillstrand, Johnathan Hillstrand and Sig Hansen explained that the process of leaving was more difficult than crab fishing.

Andy Hillstrand said:

“It was a lot about our rights to do our own brand. There was a lot of misunderstanding. We thought Discovery had everything they needed but then they came back and said they needed pickup shots so our schedule was pretty much screwed. It got to the point in our relationship where something had to change and we just said enough’s enough. So we butted heads for a while.

It kind of made it look like me and Johnathan were doing this and then Sig stood up with us but Sig was with us."

They knew that they had a huge choice ahead of them!

Hansen added:

Quitting “was the right thing to do. We are brothers. I told these guys a long time ago, it’s fishing first. We made a lot of fans. We’ve affected a lot people in positive ways. People like us because we are real and what they see is what they get. All of a sudden, things got a little out of kilter. So what you see is what you get.”

And the result was not easy on the fisherman.

Johnathan Hillstrand said:

“Emotionally, it was hell. We didn’t want to be sued. We didn’t want all the fans hating Discovery. We just want our lives back, sort of. But it’s a little too late for that. So we’re sticking around. We are glad to be back and we’re glad that everyone is happier.”

Along with returning to Deadliest Catch, the brothers will be starring in Hillstranded in April, where the two will investigate myths and legends around Alaska.

Drug Investigation on 'Deadliest Catch' Boat

The fishing boat featured on the reality show "Deadliest Catch" was the subject of a police search earlier this month after the captain called cops claiming one of the stars had been abusing drugs on board ... this according to law enforcement.

The Unalaska Department of Public Safety (Unalaska is a city in Alaska, weird ...we know) tells TMZ ... police responded to the famous "Cornelia Marie" on November 5, 2010 after receiving a call from Captain Derek Ray.

We're told Ray -- who took over the boat after the death of Captain Phil Harris -- told cops Phil's son Jake Harris (a deckhand on the boat) had been abusing prescription drugs while at sea.

Officials tell us ... cops searched the boat and found "paraphernalia" -- but not enough evidence to connect Jake to a crime.

Cops interviewed everyone on the boat -- but so far, no arrests have been made.

Jake's camp had no comment.
