In Jail with Dan Ross
Monday, August 25th, 2008
"(This is a continuation of the story of Dan Ross, a fellow Coconut Tree Divers instructor and good friend who has been wrongfully accused of murder after trying to resuscitate a girl who mysterious died Thursday night).
Those arent ketchup stains.
Dan points to the adjacent wall where crusty crimson splatters coat the dingy yellow concrete. The snake slept next to me last night, he continues. Kinda weird trusting your safety to a seventeen-year-old kid. But nobody messed with me, even when RECO [editor: Roatan Electrical Company] went out. Some of the new guys got messed up, though. Its hard to sleep when people are getting their ass kicked at the other end of the cell.
Minutes earlier, Mel and I had seen evidence of the previous nights savagery: a prisoner emerged from the pigpen, the side of his face bruised and swollen to the point he could not longer open an eye. We were now sitting in the pigpen itself: a thirty-by-eight foot general holding cell surrounded by exposed electrical wires, a solitary fan, and more than twenty prisoners, many of them minors. A Catholic priest preaches from the Bible in their midst, offering Coca-Cola and a chance to invite Jesus en sus corazones to the occasional response of Amen. The malodorous rank of human excrement and body odor is accentuated by the stifling summer heat.
Dan Ross sits on a sleeping pad with his back against the wall. Grocery bags containing food, toiletries, and books provided by his visitors line the opposite wall. We speak in low voices as to not interrupt the final minutes of the prison ministry. As the time of our meeting, Dan has been incarcerated for over twenty-four hours (as of the time of this writing, nearly forty-eight hours have passed). He speaks of bribing the snake the seventeen-year-old machete murderer whose loyalty must be purchased in order to avoid a gang beating with 100 lempiras and a few cigarettes. Those less than fortunate enough to enter the cell without such items are subject to brutal beatings, all under the direct supervision of the police guards.
This place makes you start thinking like a criminal. Hide your cigarettes, get out of the way of the older guys, dont look the guards in the eye, conceal your most important items says Dan, Im learning the rules.
Unfortunately, the standard rules of investigation have not been followed for Dan. Given that hes under investigation for murder, he finds it strange that he hasnt been fingerprinted, photographed, asked for a statement, or drug tested. The state-appointed criminal lawyer asked him to sign six blank pieces of paper in case she needs to transfer the case to someone else. When Dan wisely refused, they treated him as being hostile to the case and tossed him in the common pigpen.
The autopsy report is due to arrive today. Dan has a court appearance this morning to determine on what charges (if any) he will continue to be held. We fully expect the autopsy report to confirm Dans version of events and vindicate him of the crime. Should the Honduran judicial system inexplicably rule detain Dan further, his story will be spread to the international media as fast as possible. Please keep him in your prayers.
A lot has been written about Dans unfortunately plight, but let us not forget to also keep the family and friends of Mariska (the Dutch student who passed away) in our thoughts and prayers. Their grief and frustration over an event that scarcely makes sense is agonizing, especially given that it transpired in a third-world country thousands of miles from home. This is every parents worst nightmare. Please pray for them during this time of pain."
