Andy Roddick verwacht over twee weken zijn rentree te maken op de ATP-tour. De verliezend finalist op Wimbledon mikt op het toernooi in Washington. 'Ik zie jullie allemaal in Washington over twee weken', liet de Amerikaan via Twitter weten. Roddick kwam sinds Wimbledon niet meer in actie vanwege een heupblessure.

Roddick miste door zijn kwetsuur onder meer het Davis Cup-treffen met Kroatië en het ATP-toernooi in Indianapolis. Op Wimbledon verloor de Amerikaan dit jaar na vijf lange sets van Roger Federer.

'Grown-up' Roddick eyes US Open

Andy Roddick has "grown up" as a player and wants to use the confidence gained at Wimbledon to fuel a US Open title bid.

..Roddick said coach Larry Stefanki, hired late last year, has helped him in several areas, including fitness, nutrition, and his mental approach to the game.

"Toward the last six months of last year I felt I was going the wrong way," he said at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, where he is the top seed. "I dealt with some injuries. Then you start dealing with self-belief. Then you come back and take it on the chin a couple of times.

"Now, mentally, I've grown up on the court. I don't get too up or too down, which I used to be guilty of a lot earlier in my career. I'm just going to keep an even keel."

Roddick conceded that his epic five-set loss to Roger Federer at the All England Club was the culmination of an impressive year, not just a fabulous fortnight.

"It does help my confidence going into the US Open the fact that I was recently able to navigate my way through a major tournament," Roddick added.

"Those results can only help on a short-term basis, going into the US Open. But nothing's guaranteed. You still have to be in form."

The 26-year-old has been recovering from a hip injury and this week will play in his first tournament since his riveting 5-7 7-6 7-6 3-6 16-14 loss to Federer.

Three-times winner of the DC hardcourt event, Roddick will play either American Robby Ginepri or Benjamin Becker of Germany in his first match on Wednesday.

"I'm not expecting to pick up where I left off a month ago," he said.

"I'd love to get off to a great start. But it would be presumptuous of me to expect that in my first match."

When Roddick won the US Open in 2003 many believed he would have won several major championships by now. But that title remains the only grand slam hardware in his trophy case.

In the wake of his courageous Wimbledon effort, however, those expectations have been re-kindled. Roddick said his resurgence actually began with a semi-final appearance at the 2009 Australian Open.

"I'm having difficulty separating Wimbledon from the rest of the year," said the fifth-ranked Roddick. "Everyone's focusing on that but I feel like I've been doing a lot of the things I applied at Wimbledon from January forward."

Roddick admitted he is enjoying reading his post-Wimbledon press clippings but concedes he must back it up with an impressive run at Flushing Meadows.

"I feel like I've been a pretty good tennis player regardless of what's happened over the last six weeks," he said. "I know I'm on the defensive quite a bit for that.

"So I'll take the good press coverage while it's there. I know it's fleeting."

Wimbledon - Ivanisevic: Roddick can win at SW19


Goran Ivanisevic thinks it could take three years for Andy Roddick to recover from his Wimbledon disappointment, but he believes the American can still win the title.

..Roddick will play his first competitive match since his heartbreaking 16-14 final-set defeat to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final when he meets either Robby Ginepri or Benjamin Becker at ATP Washington on Wednesday.

And Ivanisevic claims he knows better than than anyone how the American feels, comparing Roddick's defeat to his own 1998 final loss to Pete Sampras after almost going two sets up.

"Losing that final was the worst feeling I ever had on a tennis court," said the Croatian.

"I had two set points against Sampras for two-sets-to-love, and there was a shaky line-call. If we had Hawk-Eye back then I could have been leading by two-sets-to-love and that would have been so different.

"It took me three years to recover. I only recovered when I won it in 2001. I am floating on a boat enjoying myself now on vacation. If I had not won in 2001 I might have been underneath the boat instead."

The Croatian, who will return to London to play in The Masters tournament this December, watched every ball of the Wimbledon final this year and felt Roddick's pain.

"It was exactly the same for Roddick against Federer as it was for me against Sampras," he said.

"This year's final was the best match I have ever seen Roddick play. He served so well, he played so well and if he had made that backhand volley in the second set tie-break, who knows what would have happened.

"He had 6-5 in that tie-break, and then he missed that backhand volley. He's going to dream about that shot every night until the day that he wins the title.

"He is a good player and he can still win Wimbledon - if I could do it, so can he. When I arrived at Wimbledon in 2001 I was 29 and just happy to have a wild card. I always thought, even then, that I had a chance with my serve, with my game, and look what happened.

"He is younger than I was, he still has some years left, but it could take him three years to recover from that backhand volley. Maybe two years because unlike me he had already won a Grand Slam title. But he can still do it."
