JAKARTA: An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck off the northeast tip of Indonesia's Sulawesi island early Thursday, US geologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake struck at 1:34 am (1734 GMT), with the epicentre located 327 kilometres from the town of Manado, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake struck at a depth of 33 kilometres.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre sent a bulletin saying there was "no destructive widespread tsunami threat" based on available data.
But it cautioned that quakes of such a magnitude can generate "local tsunamis" within a 100-kilometre radius of the epicentre.
The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. - AFP/de
