Mubarak Faces Threat in Beirut
23 March: Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak escaped two known assassination attempts by Osama bin Laden and Egyptian Islamic extremists in 1993 and 1995. Since then, he takes no chances.
Three weeks ago, according to DEBKAfile s intelligence sources, he was quietly warned that al Qaeda, the Lebanese Hizballah and Palestinian militias based in the Ein Hilweh refugee camp of south Lebanon - who defer to Yasser Arafat - are plotting terrorist operations against the Arab League Summit opening in Beirut next Wednesday, March 27. The two first designated targets are the Egyptian ruler and King Abdullah of Jordan. Yasser Arafat therefore had no intention of turning up in Beirut as DEBKAfile reported previously.
That warning was couched in general terms. Follow-up intelligence reports informed the Egyptian president that he had been marked for assassination. The lead conspirators were two senior al Qaeda operatives reported to be in Lebanon the Lebanese-Palestinian-Iranian terror master, Imad Mughniyeh, recently sighted in the Beqaa Valley of East Lebanon, and Abu Zubaideh, who received asylum with the Palestinians in south Lebanon after fleeing Afghanistan via Iran.
The plot, Mubarak was told, is part of a wider conspiracy for a chemical and biological assault on Arab summit participants. Anthrax was specifically mentioned.
Simultaneously, Muslim extremists and Palestinians were to take advantage of the absence of the state heads from their capitals to stir up disturbances in Egyptian and Jordanian cities.
Egyptian presidents non-attendance decision was motivated by this dual threat - not indignation over the Saudi peace initiative pulling the carpet from under Egypts leadership position in the Arab world, as was widely suggested.
DEBKAfiles Middle East sources add that if Mubarak persists in staying away, the entire conference may cave in. Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and Jordans King Abdullah may well follow suit, leaving low-ranking functionaries to act in their stead.
Thus, under the threat of anti-Arab terror, the event heralded as a pivotal Arab meeting to forge a common stand on such key issues as the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation and Americas offensive against Iraq, has scant chances of lifting off.
In any case, the Arab League has little unity to boast of. It is deeply divided into to main camps: First, pro-American (explicitly or discreetly): Egypt, Jordan, Yemen, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman. Second, the opponents of US strategy: Saudi Arabia, Syria, Lebanon, Iraqi and the Palestinians, with the non-Arab Iran and the Hizballah lurking in the background of this camp.
Up until the Wednesday, Mubarak will be the object of intense diplomatic pressure to change his mind. By shunning the summit, he will upset a vital plan put together by US vice president Richard Cheney, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and President Bushs ceasefire broker Anthony Zinni, whereby the Israelis and Palestinians declare a ceasefire and Yasser Arafat is allowed to travel to the Arab summit in Beirut.
Sharon was so keen on this gambit (See previous article on this page: Sharon Will Let Arafat Go to Beirut) that he was prepared to forego the publicly-announced pre-condition of a genuine halt in Palestinian violence.
From the first, DEBKAfiles analysts saw the prospect of a breakthrough being thus achieved as flimsy at best because it failed to take Arafats true motivations into account.
The Palestinian leader is by now closely coordinated with the most extreme elements in the Arab world from Hizballah to Baghdad. His ambitions have soared off the chart: they now encompass the subversion not only of Israel but also of US allies and moderate Arab regimes. He has used the diplomatic kowtowing and bargaining at his door to escalate and expand his terror offensive to new heights and targets.
Hosni Mubarak who has repeatedly and sharply condemned Israels targeted assassinations of terrorist activists is now targeted himself by the ticking bombs Israel seeks to eliminate. But he is no more eager than any Israeli to fall prey to a suicide bomber. With the Middle East in its present state, his decision to stay home in Cairo was the only logical step he could take to keep himself and his regime safe. But the four days remaining before summit opening are a very long time in the Middle East.

In het Midden-Oosten duurt het geweld voort.Zondagmorgen is op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever een Israëlische koloniste doodgeschoten.Het Israëlische leger heeft daarna een Palestijns politieagent doodgeschoten bij een inval in autonoom gebied in de buurt.In de Gazastrook schoot het leger een man dood.Israëlische tanks beletten daarop ambulances om in de buurt te komen.Elders in Gaza raakten twee jongeren zwaargewond toen Isrëlische troepen een begrafenisstoet beschoten.Aan de grens met Jordanië schoten Israëlische troepen vier mannen dood die eerst geschoten zouden hebben op Jordaanse grenswachten.

Een vriend van me zit daar in Tel-Aviv, was ie laatst uitgeweest, liep hij over een straat met 3 andere naar de kroeg, kwam ie over dezelfde weg terug 2 uur later, stond der allemaal politie, waren der 8 mensen vermoord

Je kan wel zeggen we kijken naar het heden maar het heden is een gevolg van het verleden en we kunnen het heden alleen recht zetten door onrecht uit het verleden en heden recht te zetten en een toekomst te garanderen voor de kinderen die erna komen en niet dat ze met het probleem van hun opa opgezadelt blijven. AIDA REFUGEE CAMP, West Bank -- The death of Huda Hawajah, mother of five, might have been chalked up as one more tragedy, another Palestinian civilian killed by Israeli troops during a military raid.
Except that Hawajah's death made the evening news. The Israeli evening news.
And with that came a wrenching debate over the tactics employed by an army that the majority of Israelis regard as a respectable institution with high moral standards. The footage broadcast by commercial Channel Two television forced Israelis to examine their army's behavior in the aftermath of its largest ground offensive in two decades. And it also set off a firestorm of debate over media access to the war. Israel's raids into Palestinian refugee camps and cities earned considerable reproach overseas, among human rights organizations and at the United Nations. The sight of hundreds of men--blindfolded, handcuffed and marked with numbers--shocked people here and abroad. But the short videotape of the raid into the Aida refuge camp brought the troubling issue home to many Israelis.
Some believed that scenes of Hawajah's children watching her bleed to death as Israeli soldiers stormed her home should not have been broadcast. Too demoralizing at a time of war, they said.
Others said it was important to confront what the army was doing in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, for better or for worse.
Channel Two defied the army's public affairs office, which ordered that the tape not be broadcast. The footage was taken by an Israeli cameraman who was allowed to accompany the troops, and several scenes were included in a current affairs program March 15. Last week, the defense minister ordered the army to "think twice" before again allowing reporters to accompany soldiers in action.
Footage of Searches
In addition to the Hawajah ordeal in the Aida camp, near the biblical city of Bethlehem, the footage showed Israeli soldiers rummaging through the bedrooms and kitchens of other Palestinian refugee families. The searches were part of a massive military operation in which thousands of troops raided refugee camps and Palestinian cities throughout the West Bank and Gaza with the stated goal of rounding up militants and confiscating weapons.
The next scene showed Hawajah's front door, which had been blown from its hinges and crumpled by the force of an explosion. Viewers did not see Huda Hawajah being mortally wounded, but according to her husband, Ismail, pieces of metal were propelled from the blast and into her body as she stood in the hallway, on the way to the kitchen to prepare lunch.
Viewers did see Ismail pleading for help in getting an ambulance past Israeli military roadblocks, and they heard a soldier, probably the medic, saying he was reluctant to lift the woman on a stretcher because she might lose consciousness.
The Hawajahs' 9-year-old daughter was then seen weeping, and the reporter explained that she was watching her mother on the floor. The woman was later seen being taken away by Red Crescent medical personnel. Then an 11-year-old daughter, Sumud, pleaded with the soldiers not to tear a hole in the wall, as they did frequently during the operation to create passages between refugee homes. "Please, please," she said in English. They drilled a gaping hole anyway.
Ambulance Faces Delays
In an interview last week at his home, Ismail Hawajah said he noticed the television camera as the troops came into his living and dining rooms and ordered his family into a single area. He asked the cameraman if he spoke Arabic, hoping the man could serve as a translator. But the cameraman said he didn't.
Hawajah, 36, said he had expected the soldiers to arrive at his doorstep the morning of March 8 because he could hear them drilling through the walls of other houses in the neighborhood.
"Then I saw them through the [door's] window, and I was waiting for them to knock. I would have opened the door," he said. "All of a sudden, I heard the explosion."
His wife lay bleeding profusely on the carpeted floor. He frantically removed her veil and tried to use it as a tourniquet. Then about 30 soldiers entered and ordered him to stand back. The medic helped attend to Huda Hawajah, but it took nearly an hour for a Palestinian ambulance to get around various roadblocks and tanks and reach the stricken woman. She was pronounced dead when the ambulance at last reached a hospital.
Ismail said he explained to their five children that their mother was dead and had gone to be with God. The two youngest, 3 and 4, don't understand and still expect her to come home from the hospital, he said.
Huda was a math teacher. Ismail works at an Islamic orphanage in East Jerusalem.

Mensen die echt iets objectief kunnen oordelen zijn mensenrechtenorganisatie's.Die hebben kritiek op Israel als zowel de Palestijnen.
Mijn hart ligt bij de Palestijnen, daar kom ik voor op.Is meer dan logisch dat je daar dan partij voor kiest.Ik probeer nu wel met objectieve bronnen te komen om mijn standpunt duidelijk te maken.
Verder ben ik zelf ook al in die regio geweest.

Maar wat vinden de mensen daar? We schijnen het hier allemaal beter te weten.
