The Constant Gardener Oscar winner Rachel Weisz has turned down a role in The Mummy 3, leaving her co-star Brendan Fraser without an on-screen wife. Weisz and Fraser played love interests Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell and Rick O'Connell in Stephen Sommers' Egyptian action movies The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. While Fraser has signed on to star in a second sequel, Weisz is unable to commit due to a scheduling conflict. The Fast And The Furious director Rob Cohen is set to take over from Sommers for the third movie, which is scheduled for release next year.

Plot Outline:Alex, the trouble-seeking son of adventurers Rick and Evy O'Connell, unearths the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin (Jet Li).

Dit was al een tijdje bekend maar toch wel erg jammer.

och nee heh Deel 1 was een fantastische film, maar daarna werd het niks meer aan (o.a. door de komst van de scorpion king)

"Universal has announced the title for the third film in The Mummy series. The Mummy 3: Curse Of The Dragon will hit theaters on July 11th 2008..."

Universal Pictures and director Rob Cohen have set 26-year-old Australian actor Luke Ford ("Kokoda," "Junction Boys," TV's "McLeod's Daughters") to star in the third installment of "The Mummy" reports Variety.

In "The Mummy" sequel, Ford will play Alex O'Connell, the 20ish son of adventurer Rick O'Connell (Fraser), who journeys into the forbidden tombs of China and into the Himalayas, where they run into a new shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor who was cursed by a female wizard.

Jet Li plays the mummy, Michelle Yeoh the wizard. The studio has tested six actresses to replace Rachel Weisz in the role of Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell after she declined to reprise.

The move potentially sets up the franchise for future films to be carried by Ford. The young actor beat out four much more established actors in screen tests with Fraser.

Shooting will begin in Montreal on July 27th, and then move to China. The film is slated to open July 2008, just before the Olympics begin in Beijing.

Bloody-Disgusting reports that Alex Pettyfer ("Stormbreaker"), Anthony Wong ("The Matrix" sequels) and Isabella Leong ("The Eye") will round out the cast for Universal Pictures' "The Mummy 3: Curse of the Dragon."

They join returning actors Brendan Fraser and John Hannah along with new to the franchise actors Luke Ford, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh and Maria Bello in the film.

Production on the post-World War II set actioneer is underway in Montreal and China right now through til November.

Verhaallijn:

Right now Director Rob Cohen is in Montreal directing “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and has posted his first entry in a blog about the film - one which reveals the plot in much more detail:

"In the film Jet Li plays a despotic Chinese Emperor in 50 B.C. whose evil is punished by a terrible curse laid on him by a wizardress (Michelle Yeoh): he and his army are turned into to terra cotta for all time; that is, unless he is re-awakened which, of course, is where the O’Connell’s come back into it.

The story moves to the year 1946. When we find them, Rick (Brendan Fraser) and Evelyn (Maria Bello) are retired to Oxfordshire, England, having been spies for the British during World War II. They are bored silly and welcome the offer of “one last mission” from the Foreign Office. Their assignment: courier a precious artifact back to the museum in Shanghai, China from which it was stolen.

Back to Asia: China is in turmoil but Jonathan (John Hannah) owns an Egyptian-themed bar in Shanghai. Unbeknownst to his parents, now grown-up Alex O’Connell (Luke Ford) is following in the family business as a young archaeologist on a dig in north-central China. He makes the discovery of a lifetime: the tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which has been buried for millennia.

A beautiful assassin (Isabella Leong) tries to kill him to keep the location secret but Alex prevails. The Emperor’s monument is transported back to Shanghai where another plot is in motion: military zealot Anthony Wong intends to awaken the Emperor and aid him in the re-conquest of China and the raising of his terra cotta army of ten thousand clay warriors (google The Terra Cotta army of Xi’an if you want to read more about the history of this wonder of the ancient world).

The family is reunited and high adventure ensues: crash landings, treks thru the Himalayas, Yeti, avalanches (bigger than the one I did in “XXX”), Shangri-la, three-headed dragons, pools of eternal life, epic battles, a shape-shifting Jet Li….I could go on but I don’t want to give it all away."

They have currently shot about five weeks of a twenty-week schedule. The film hits cinemas on July 30th next year.

Eerste 2 fillms waren best vermakelijk.

Zonde dat er op dit soort films steeds meer vervolgen blijven komen. Het eerste deel was matig, het tweede deel flut en het derde deel moet het zelfs doen zonder Rachel Weisz. Dat belooft wat...

1ste deel was aardig, 2de was minder en de spinoff Scorpion King vond ik gewoon ruk. Vond zowiezo het verhaal dat ze een kind kregen en dat hij allerlei kattekwaad ging uithalen slecht gevonden, en als ik de verhaallijn van deel 3 lees krijgt de zoon van een nog grotere rol.

Ben ik de enige die deel 2 heel slecht vond?

Jezus, Jet Li wat doe je?

Wordt ze eindelijk eens verstandig. Dat we in de toekomst maar veel mooie films met met mevr Weisz mogen aanschouwen.

Ik vond ook deel 2 wel vermakelijk, beide films deden precies wat ze moesten doen en dat in een leuke setting.

Ha! ik ben de enige die de Scorpion King wel een leuke film vond, heb m zelfs op dvd

Maar The Mummy 3 had van mij nu ook weer niet echt gehoeven, beetje uitgemolken concept..

Veel CGI en ik mis Rachel Weisz.
Toch ga ik hem wel bekijken.
