Ik lees op de site van oor dat het onderzoek naar de dood van Elliott Smith nog steeds niet is afgerond. Ze zijn er nog niet uit of het nou moord of zelfmoord was.

Inderdaad, XO is perfecte cd 'om mee te beginnen'. Daarna zou ik figure8 of either/or eens luisteren!

Beginnen met XO. Die heeft de beste songs en de beste productie. Daarna die box zoeken met Roman Candle, Elliott Smith en Either / Or in ene, dat is Elliott op zijn puurst. Pas dan Figure 8 aanschaffen lijkt me, is een beetje XO maar dan een heel stuk minder.

Ik vind elliot smith ook echt vet goeie muziek, het is heel origineel, zonder vreemd te klinken, gewoon echt supermooie nummers heeft ie.
Ik las idd helaas in de krant laatst dat ie dood was.
Z'n door is inderdaad nogal 'in nevelen gehuld', The Smoking Gun heeft het politie rapport online staan en kennelijk wordt moord niet uitgesloten. MTV heeft een interview met vriendin Jeniffer Chiba, die in het apartement was toen het gebeurde.
Elliot Smith? Da's toch die kerel die verschrikkelijk depri muziek maakt en zelfmoord gepleegd heeft?

thank you so much to gary, elliott's father, for taking the time to send this update concerning elliott's studio and the future release of 'from a basement on the hill.' here is the message he sent to us:
"we have received many questions about the sale of elliott's studio and the release of his new cd. i want to give you as much of an update as i can. first, the studio: when the initial news about the studio sale was posted on the site, we had hopes that someone would come along, take it over and run it as elliott might have envisioned. this was a good idea, but turned out to be ultimately unrealistic. we have had many wonderful responses from people who want to manage the space but do not have the financial means to keep it going. we have also had many inquiries from people who have been interested in purchasing pieces of studio equipment for their own use. we have decided that we can no longer attempt to keep it open as "elliott's studio." in addition, we do not feel comfortable sellling it piece by piece. so, we are going to let a responsible music dealer find someone who is able to purchase the equipment for their own studio, and move it to a new space. elliott's instruments will not be sold.
i want to thank all who have expressed interest in his equipment and in being involved in the attempt to maintain the studio space....we have truly appreciated the many kind words which have come along with the inquiries to the studio e-mail address.
now, the new cd. we are beginning the final mixing and production phase in mid-may and are planning for a september or october release. we will know the name of the label by the end of the month and i'll let you know just as soon as the final decision is made."

The Los Angeles Times has reported that Elliott Smith's final album, titled Songs from a Basement on a Hill, is nearing completion and that its tentative fall release is going according to plan. However, it seems to have been pared down from its originally reported double-album status, and will now be released as a single disc. The record, as most of you are probably aware, had been mostly completed before Smith's death from a (possibly) self-inflicted stabwound to the chest last October, but was not yet in a condition suitable for release.
Concerned parties can take solace in the fact that the album is shaping up as a labor of love for producers Rob Schnapf (co-producer of 1998's XO and 2000's Figure 8) and Joanna Bolme (Smith's former girlfriend and bassist for Stephen Malkmus' backing band, The Jicks). The two were appointed by Smith's family to put the finishing touches on Smith's musical tombstone-- which hopefully means, in the grand scheme of posthumous records, that Songs From a Basement on a Hill should be more Better Dayz than Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory.
Schnapf and Bolme are doing their best to complete the album in the way they believe Smith would have, taking cues from his written notes, early demos, and even conversations with people who had been in the studio with him while he worked. "Each record is different," Schnapf told the Times. "He's got his melodic sensibility... but he's not doing the same thing again. He's just pushing the boundaries, sending out the probe."
Regarding the album's sound, Schnapf said, "He always played with form, and that continues... I was always a fan of the littler, direct, intimate thing, and I'm just happy to see that he managed to do both again-- have this crazy big aural thing, and then be able to do a song just him and a guitar. The combination of the two makes both stronger."
Said Bolme, "There were little bits in the songs that would come up, and me and Rob would look at each other like, 'Ah, that's an Elliott thing.' Like his little goofy drum fill, or a guitar lick or something. We've had enough experience to know that would be the thing that Elliott would walk over and turn up." In an e-mail to Pitchfork, Charlie Ramirez, webmaster of the premiere Elliott Smith fansite Sweet Adeline, said that Smith had described the record to him personally as being similar to his work on Either/Or.
In related news, an upcoming Barsuk compilation is slated to feature a previously unreleased track by Smith. Titled Future Soundtrack for America, the disc was assembled by They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh, and is intended to raise money for liberal polit-organization Moveon.org. It will be released August 6th. The label is being tight-lipped as to which Smith song will be featured, but since the compilation also includes songs by Blink-182, OK Go, and Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am, we suppose it'll be an essential purchase regardless. Wait... did we say Barsuk is putting this out? Yeah, I guess we did. A little Death Cab for Cutie goes straight to your head!

Ik ben eigenlijk bang dat dit gaat tegen vallen, a la Sketches van Jeff Buckley.... Het zou zonde zijn. De nummers zijn hoe dan ook niet zoals Elliott ze bedoeld heeft, hoe goed degenen die plaat afmixen daar ook naar kunnen gissen. Het lijkt me dan toch enigszins gefrustreerd luisteren. Liever zou ik dan nog de ruwe opnamen horen, zoals ze achtergelaten zijn. Wellicht is dat minder beluisterbaar, maar dat is dan wel echt Elliott.

Heeft iemand hier 'From A Basement On The Hill' al geluisterd? Ik heb het net voor de eerste keer mogen luisteren na lange tijd downloaden (niemand vertellen he) en er staan hele mooie nummers op. Zoals verwacht klinkt dit album toch net iets anders dan ik van Elliot Smith gewend ben, maar om het als slechter te kunnen bestempelen dan het voorgaande werk (wat ik betwijfel) moet ik het toch nog een aantal keren goed luisteren, dat ga ik nu dan ook doen.

"Deze warm rockende opener van laatste studioplaat Riot Act (het nummer "Can't Keep") is hier getransformeerd tot een duet tussen Vedder en ukelele, gespeeld door Elliott Smith, die de dag voor dit optreden dood werd gevonden in zijn appartement in Los Angeles"
