Director Francis Ford Coppola has revealed that a super hush-hush, multi-million dollar full film restoration of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II have been completed. The project, basically an effort to save the damaged and deteriorating negatives of the two Oscar winners, apparently has been underway for the last year under the supervision of preservationist Robert A. Harris (Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Vertigo).

According to Mr. Coppola, Paramount was initially reluctant to foot the bill for the restoration. But fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg stepped in and convinced the studio otherwise. Although nothing has been mentioned yet, it's likely that the newly restored negatives will be capitalized to strike prints for a limited theatrical run, as well as new standard and hi-def video re-releases.
