The biggest clash of Week 28 takes place at the Stadio Olimpico as Scudetto-chasing Roma play host to Milan. The visitors require a victory to continue their assault on fourth place, but in doing so they would almost certainly end the Giallorossi’s title challenge – thus handing the trophy to neighbours Inter.

The Rossoneri were shell-shocked last week by their defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League second round, which kept up the recent trend of the competition winners failing to overcome the second hurdle of their defence. Nonetheless, their late victory over Empoli – which required goals from Massimo Ambrosini and Kaka in the last five minutes – snapped a two-game winless skid and moved them just a point behind Fiorentina in the race to secure the fourth and final spot for next season’s European Cup.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti is likely to stick with the majority of the side who overcame the Tuscan minnows, but he is able to welcome back Gennaro Gattuso after suspension. The former Rangers man will take the place of Yoann Gourcuff, who failed to make the most of just his fourth League start of the campaign. The Diavolo are still without Brazilian quartet Marcos Cafu, Nelson Dida, Ronaldo and Serginho, but both Clarence Seedorf and Alessandro Nesta are expected to shake off minor knocks to take a place on the bench.

Javier Zanetti’s last-gasp equaliser for Inter against Roma back at the end of February looked almost certain to have ended the Eternal City outfit’s title charge, but a mini-Nerazzurro collapse has pushed them right back into the frame just six points behind. Their challenge was maintained by a fine win in Naples against a Napoli side who just a week earlier had defeated Inter. Goals by Simone Perrotta and Francesco Totti proved to be the difference, with the latter’s tally currently an impressive 13 strikes in just 19 appearances.

Both men are expected to line-up against the Rossoneri in a virtually unchanged starting XI. Coach Luciano Spalletti is tipped to make just a minor adjustment to his defence by bringing in Max Tonetto for Cicinho. That means former Milan stopper Christian Panucci can revert to right-back, while Juan will take a central role alongside Philippe Mexes, who netted a sublime goal in last season’s 1-1 draw between the two sides.

However, Roma have had the better of recent meetings after winning earlier this season to go with a fine San Siro victory last term. Prior to last term the clubs regularly took it in turns to take the three points, although Milan can perhaps claim that they won the most important game. Andriy Shevchenko’s first minute goal back in May 2004 handed the Rossoneri the points and ensured that they were crowned Campioni d’Italia. A similar result this time out would almost certainly mean that Inter would claim that prize for a third consecutive season…

AMSTERDAM - De 77-jarige Hongaarse econoom, superbelegger en filantroop George Soros wil de Italiaanse voetbalclub AS Roma voor 283 miljoen euro kopen. Volgens welingelichte bronnen zal de bekerwinnaar wellicht vandaag al akkoord gaan met de overname.

Op de beurs van Milaan klom het aandeel gisteren met zo'n 12% naar 1,47 euro, tot de Italiaanse beursautoriteit de handel rond half twaalf stillegde en de club dwong een verklaring af te leggen. Die verklaring kwam een uur later, en kwam erop neer dat de club niet in gesprek is over een overname.

Vanuit het Soros-kamp bleef het muisstil. Het bod van Soros, die volgens het zakenblad Fortune 8,5 miljard dollar waard is, komt neer op ruim 2,10 euro per aandeel. De voetbalclub is voor 66% in handen van de familie Sensi, die met de deal een slordige 210 miljoen euro zou opstrijken.

AS Roma is sinds 1999 een beursgenoteerde voetbalclub. Aandelen van de club zijn het laatste half jaar met maar liefst 93% gestegen. Bij het sluiten van de beurs stond het voetbalaandeel op 1,54 euro, de hoogste slotstand in bijna 6 jaar.

Het gerenommeerde Amerikaanse zakenblad Forbes schatte AS Roma vorige maand in zijn jaarlijkse voetballijstje op een waarde van 321 miljoen euro, waarmee de Italiaanse club de elfde plek innam. De Giallorossi (geel-roden) kenden vorig jaar een omzet van 158 miljoen euro maar kampen ook met fikse schulden.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat een buitenlander interesse toont in de Italiaanse topclub. In maart was er al een bod van John Fisher, eigenaar van onder meer de honkbalclub Oakland Athletics en de voetbalploeg San José Earthquakes.

Fisher heeft volgens Forbes Magazine een vermogen van 1,5 miljard dollar en bezit onder meer de populaire kledingketen Gap, opgericht door zijn vader Donald Fisher. Fisher bood 250 miljoen euro. Voorzitter Franco Sensi (die overigens op leeftijd is en zijn dochter Rosella naar voren heeft geschoven) mocht in het bestuur blijven zetelen als erevoorzitter.

Italpetroli, de oliemaatschappij van de familie Sensi, wimpelde het bod af. En nu is het dus de beurt aan Soros. De van oorsprong Hongaarse miljardair heeft zijn vermogen vergaard met zijn eigen hedge fund Quantum Fund. In 1992 leende hij miljoenen Engelse ponden en kocht daar Duitse marken voor.

Hiermee speculeerde hij op de val van het pond, dat zijns inziens was overgewaardeerd. Op 16 september 1992 zakte het pond in elkaar en verdiende Soros in een week tijd een miljard dollar. Sindsdien staat hij bekend als de man die de Bank of England deed wankelen. Soros houdt zich momenteel voornamelijk bezig met filantropische activiteiten.
