In the future, humans in suede jerkins and flared trousers live in controlled environments and (in a twist) are forced by the Government to take mood-altering drugs.

Ex-rebellion leader Rog Blake is convicted on false charges and deported to a penal colony on a large, boxy spaceship.

"Maintenance were supposed to fix that ID5 vibration," mutters the captain as the hyperdrive belches smoke and sparks like a child's sky rocket.

On board, Blake makes friends with Jenna, a low-cut blond smuggler, a giant named Gan, and Cur Avon, "the second most brilliant computer thief in the galaxy."

"Who's the first most brilliant?" asks Blake.

"The one who caught him," says Vila, an annoying pickpocket.

Suddenly the ship is rocked by explosions. A stack of orange plastic cups falls over, and the prisoners take advantage of the confusion and mutiny.

Avon hacks the main computer, an octagonal bird-bath with large switches and dials on the top, and the friends escape to an alien ship they christen the Liberator, a four-hulled Marie Celeste with a flight deck that looks like a Japanese disco.

Jenna learns to pilot the ship by pressing different buttons and seeing what happens, and the team kits out in the latest space styles, courtesy of clothes the aliens have left on board - sort of Ziggy Stardust meets Eddie Izzard on a bad hair day.

They also discover a butlerish flight computer named Zen and a handful of cheap costume jewellery - "There must be more wealth in that room than in the entire Federation banking system!"

The fugitives must decide whether to run or fight.

"We'll fight," says Blake.

"Not without first discussing it thoroughly," says Avon.

Conceived by Terry Nation, Blake's 7 was pitched as "the Dirty Dozen in space" but its vision is wholly European: an ethnically divided galaxy is united under a repressive military bureaucracy, its totalitarian leaders vexed by self-righteous reactionaries who take votes before blowing things up.

The BBC ran the series for 52 episodes and four seasons from 1979-82, and the production fair shimmers with the care and craftsmanship that was helping a lot of British industry into an early grave at the time.

The characters are bitter with cynicism and dangerous politics. They don't like each other and don't say what they think, even when they try.

"That would be disarming if I didn't know you meant it" is a typical zinger, twisting meaning through several dimensions.

Wordplay came easily to Nation, a Welshman who wrote radio scripts for comedians including Spike Milligan and Tony Hancock before moving to television in the 1960s.

He invented the Daleks for Dr Who and Tara King for The Avengers. Both had trouble climbing stairs.

The only real special effects he could afford on Blake's 7 were the inventive stories and unconventional characters that have made the series a roaring cult favourite around the world.

After the series he left for the States to make MacGyver, a bigger commercial success with less flair and fewer flares.
