Of the two films of [reg] I have been lucky enough to see on a movie screen, [film] is my favorite (the other is [andere film]). This film is simply a masterpiece, and from what I have read in the critical literature, may very well be [reg]'s best.

One of the things I cherish in this movie is the indelible sense it conveys of a specific time and place: Rome in the early 1960s (though a brief sequence takes place in Verona). And from this specificity is culled a most profound meditation on the alienation of modern man. Of all the fine performers, [actrice] is the standout. [film] is one of the supreme works of world cinema.

Summary: Pretentious, artsy, unsubtle, and tremendously boring

This is one of the most boring movies I have ever watched all the way through. It is pretentious and artsy-craftsy to the nth degree. There are long stretches of film with no dialogue whatever, just actors looking at each "meaningfully" or scenes of Italian city streets. It takes about 10 minutes to "get" [reg]'s message that life is meaningless, humans are unable to communicate meaningfully with each other, and urban life leads to complete alienation. After that, it is pounded into you over and over for the next two hours. There is no ending to the film; it just stops (finally). I cannot believe that IMDb viewers give this movie an 8.2 average score - I rate it a 2.
