Doctor's claim to have cloned embryo met with revulsion

CLAIMS that the worlds first cloned baby could be on its way have been met with widespread condemnation.

Politicians, doctors, religious and pressure groups rounded on Dr Panos Zavos, an American, in the wake of his announcement at the weekend that he had implanted a freshly-cloned embryo into a woman.

He has refused to identify the infertile 35-year-old or say where the procedure - which is illegal in the UK - took place, but said there was a 30 per cent chance of pregnancy.

Experts were united in attacking the specialist, accusing him of exploiting infertile couples desperation for children and challenging him to present proof of his claim.

Patrick Cusworth, for the pressure group Life, said: "We feel that Dr Zavos has exposed this woman to near-suicidal risk for his own financial and egotistical motives."

The Health Secretary, John Reid, added: "This government shares the widespread public repugnance that human cloning could be attempted and views this as a gross misuse of genetic science."

Dr Zavos said the cloned embryo was grown from skin cells taken from the womans husband and the implanting was filmed. He said the process was similar to that which created Dolly the sheep.
