DISCOGRAPHYquote:quote:"With any trilogy," says John Mayer, "the third in the series blows it open."
On CONTINUUM the singer/songwriter/guitar slinger meets that challenge head-on. Mayer's third studio album follows the multi-platinum ROOM FOR SQUARES (2001) and HEAVIER THINGS (2003) and marks his first turn as producer. It is his most soulful, cohesive collection yet and he says it's no accident that this project is where all of his efforts, his potential, and his disparate influences fully come together.
"The night I was recognized for 'Daughters' at the Grammys was the night this record started," he says. "I knew I had bought the time to learn everything I needed before I started this one. CONTINUUM is not a shot in the dark, it's not a guesstimation. This is the first endeavor in my entire life, music or otherwise, that I did not cop out for a second on."
The last few years have seen Mayer maintaining a frantic pace. In addition to his own writing, recording, and touring, he has collaborated with icons and contemporaries alike - Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, and Herbie Hancock, as well as Kanye West, the Dixie Chicks, and Alicia Keys. In doing so, Mayer says his own interests have grown and his perspectives expanded.
Mayer also credits his collaboration with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino (collectively known as the John Mayer Trio) and the intimate-venue tour that produced the 2005 live album TRY! with helping to recalibrate his musical priorities. "As a songwriter, the Trio helped me focus on being more raw," he says. "As a guitar player, it helped me get a lot out of my system. If it wasn't for the Trio, CONTINUUM would have been less accessible. It let me settle up with my needs as a musician, and get to a point somewhere between the Trio record and ROOM FOR SQUARES - and that's a really good place to be."
While the Trio tour showcased Mayer's blazing fretwork, he says he learned lessons from those shows about restraint. "When I made my first record, there was no trust in space because it was all me, everything was just on those six strings," he says. "With Steve and Pino, it was all about space, using a whole different palette. When your tone is good on the guitar you need, like, four notes. The more concise and right you have it, the less you need around it."
Mayer points to one song in particular as the turning point for CONTINUUM. "I wrote 'Gravity' last summer, and it changed everything," he says. "You talk less when you trust that people understand you. 'Gravity' had to be sparse. And when I listened to it - for the first time, holding back - then it was a whole new game. That might be the most important song I ever wrote."
Armed with this outlook, Mayer knew CONTINUUM would tackle larger ideas than those that defined his previous albums. "A big challenge was writing about big themes," he says. "I'm not a better writer in terms of sitting down in front of a pad, but I'm better in terms of receiving inspiration and converting it into something 'real' quicker. I'm better equipped to deal with those moments."
With "Waiting on the World to Change", Mayer shot for something even more ambitious - something like an attempt to explain his generation's attitudes about politics. "It's meant to shed a little light on inactivity and inaction," he says, "because I don't believe that inaction is disinterest, I think inaction is preservation - nobody wants to get involved in a debate in which the rules and the facts will change so that they'll lose. So we end up with this other option, which is, I guess we'll just have to wait for things to get better.
Having just announced a co-headlining tour with Sheryl Crow to help launch CONTINUUM, Mayer is raring to start playing his new material for an audience. "This record is infinitely playable," he says. "I built so many corners into these songs I cannot wait to play them live."
Ultimately, CONTINUUM represents maturity, both musically and thematically, for John Mayer - a concept that he wasn't comfortable with until now. "A lot of these songs are about coming to terms with getting older," he says. "My generation was never told we were going to get older. We thought we were going to hear our names on 'Romper Room' for the rest of our lives. For a long time, I was really upset about getting older, worried that things were just going to level out.
"But then I realized that everyone around me was all getting older at the same time. We're all fighting it together, and we're always going to be those kids, the first really emotionally aware generation. When I realized that, I could relax about it a little bit. And I thought that maybe I can be the guy to sing about it."

De show die in oktober al werd opgenomen, wordt eindelijk in Maart uitgezonden. Details zie hierboven (alles is in flash, dus no copy paste helaas )
Damien Rice ben ik met je eens; eerste keer leuk, derde keer over. Maar hoe luister je dan naar muziek? Als achtergrond? Dansen of zo?

Article Last Updated: 01/12/2007 09:18:54 PM EST
Last Saturday night around 6:30 I was snuggled in at home with "A Prairie Home Companion" on WSHU, 91.1 on your FM dial.
I was in Guy Noir mode. You know, nursing a martini and mulling life's persistent questions. It was shaping up as a nice night.
And then my cell phone started with its annoying ring. I let the call go into voice mail. At the first break, I checked the message. It went like this:
"Hey, Mike. It's John Mayer. I'm taking advantage of some post-nap Zen thinking, before the maniacal braincells wake up and work against me.
"I'm feeling very goal-oriented right now," the young man went on. "I'm coming back into Fairfield tomorrow, so I want to sit down with you, maybe&. if you have time."
I called back and told him, "I'm listening to Garrison Keillor here, ya know?"
It had little impact. He wanted to talk and wanted to get together the next day.
I was still feeling Guy Noirish. "Wait, let me check with my girl," I said. My daughter Julia, 20, was nearby.
"Hey, Sugar," I yelled, "how's my calendar look for tomorrow around 2 p.m.?" Julia rolled her eyes. "Looks clear, Dad."
I've always been a sucker for polite, Grammy-winning, genius musicians who are considerate enough to ask me if I have time to talk with them. So I said "okay."
-Sunday afternoon — I brought Sugar with me just in case John Mayer ever decided to misquote me and give me a headache in the tabloids — we met on the hush-hush and the QT at the Starbucks on the
Post Road in Fairfield. It wasn't all social. In fact, we had an agenda: to strategize in the matter of Walgreens and the mega-company's desire to put a store in the now-vacant site of a former food market in the Stratfield section of Fairfield.
Niceties out of the way, we got down to business.
"So what do you think? A concert at the Quick Center to raise some money?" he asked.
Not enough time, I said. The town Planning and Zoning Commission may be acting within a few weeks. The Stratfield Village Association, though, could probably use a contribution to keep up the fight.
So the other day he called Maryann Garcia, the SVA lady, and sent her a check. John Mayer is arguably the hottest musician on the planet at the moment. Why's he giving up time on a Sunday afternoon — he would be leaving the next morning for three days in San Francisco to help Steve Jobs introduce the iPhone and then leave on a five-week tour of the Eastern United States — to talk about a vacant supermarket?
Because he is more than an enormously talented, enormously wealthy performer and celebrity. Less visible to the public is a sensitive young man who has strong memories of growing up in Fairfield — for better and for worse, by the way — a well-honed sense of loyalty to friends, family, community and to a code of living.
"I'm going to die a guy," he said, "not an artist."
He makes decisions as John Mayer the person, not John Mayer the star.
Ditto for the selection of friends. Just for the record: In an hour-long conversation that covered a lot of ground, he brought up his whirlwind holiday week in New York and a friend he called "Jess." The few thoughts he spoke on the subject — they're going to stay private — were, in my mind, at least, infused with affection.
But back to the store.
"Hey, it was my first job," he said. "I have great memories of that first job." On a prior occasion he talked about putting tunes together in his head while he was pushing carts in the parking lot and stocking shelves at what was then the Gran Central Market, sort of a Mississippi Delta in the career of John Mayer.
John Mayer is not taking the mantle of "The Anti-Walgreen." He just wants to help preserve the neighborhood he grew up in, and where his parents still live. "I'll keep in touch from the tour," he said. As we wrapped up, it was getting dark outside. The people in Starbucks had been very cool. Lots of foot traffic past the table, but nothing over. Someone had written on his coffee cup in black marker, "Love Your Music."
"That's nice," he said when he noticed it. The three of us walked outside. "I'm gonna go home and spend a few hours with my parents," he said. Jules and I headed in one direction, he in another. But the Starbucks door opened and two girls ran out.
"JOHN!!," they yelled.
He stopped, turned around and walked back and was talking with them as we pulled off, his reunion with his parents put off for yet another few minutes.

By now you've probably heard of the incredible tension and controversy on the set of TV's hit series "Grey's Anatomy", involving a particularly unsavory homosexual slur allegedly made to a fellow castmate by actor Isaiah Washington. Gay and lesbian groups are outraged, calling for Mr. Washington's immediate termination from the show.
Now, far be it from me to chime in on other people's business, but just like the man standing in line for a movie overhears a stranger behind him whom he knows has confused the finer points of the film "Throw Mama From The Train" with those of "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!", sometimes you have to turn around and butt into a situation that doesn't concern you in order to offer a little bit of assistance.
ABC may fire Mr. Washington, and it seems as if the pressure to do so is mounting by the day. They may also choose to placate all parties involved with some well-constructed press releases and the soothing touch of time, but in my mind, neither outcome succeeds in making any strides in promoting the tenets of tolerance and understanding.
I would like to offer my suggestion for a solution; produce an episode of Grey's Anatomy in which Mr. Washington's character, Dr. Burke comes out to his friends and colleagues as a gay man!!! What better way for an actor to get to the roots of his discrimination than by portraying the very the subject of his own ire for the remainder of his contract? That'll learn ya!
In case any writers of the show happen to be reading, I have included some possible script excerpts that might help get this story line up and running.
SCENES FROM 'GREY'S ANATOMY', by John Mayer
INT: NIGHT, ON LOCATION
(THE RAMROD, A large rock club is packed to the rafters with energetic, bold looking twenty-somethings. On stage, an almost impossibly flamboyant group of performers are rocking out to a psychedelic beat that has the crowd whipped up into a primal frenzy.)
(CHRISTINA leans into the ear of PRESTON, struggling to be heard over the music)
CHRISTINA:
I think it's really cool that you wanted to take us to a SCISSOR SISTERS concert, Burke! I gotta say, I never pegged you for the type. You're always talking about how much you love Ultimate Fighting Championships and Adult Video Award shows.
(CHRISTINA's eyes skitter from left to right, enlightened.)
Pretty much all the time, come to think of it.
BURKE:
(cautiously)
A friend of mine gave me their CD for Christmas. I figured I'd give it a listen. Turns out they weren't bad. They have a pleasant enough sound. Besides, I figured it would be nice to show you guys a fun time for once.
CUT TO:
STAGE
(The band plays the final exciting beats of "Kiss You Off". Jake Shears, The SCISSOR SISTERS lead singer [himself] takes the mic.)
JAKE:
Thank you very muuuuuuch Seattle!!! This next song is called "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" and tonight, we want to send this song off to a very special man in the crowd, Preston Burke, webmaster of the biggest SISTERS fan site, idontfeellikedancing.com!!! Thanks Preston! The tea cookies you left backstage were deeelish!!!
(CROWD APPLAUDS WILDLY WHILE THE BAND LAUNCHES INTO THEIR HIT SINGLE. PRESTON, now downright sheepish, grabs his coat and small pleather DKNY bag, fumbling towards the exit.)
BURKE:
I think I left a scalpel in that mime today. See ya!!!
And, SCENE.
"But John", you ask, waking up your roommate, "how can anyone be sure that Mr. Washington will abide by the agreement to play an openly homosexual Cardiothoracic surgeon?"
I present to you a potential storyline that will ensure the power lies with the writing team:
INT., DAYTIME, DR. BURKE'S OFFICE.
(Dr. MEREDITH GREY pokes her head into BURKE's office)
MEREDITH:
Burke, I just wanted to let you know the mime with the scalpel you left in him is going to make a full reco-
(MEREDITH is shocked)
What is that??
BURKE:
(casually)
What is wha- Oh, this. This is my pet cougar, Dolce. Ferocious little guy.
(a large cougar in a cramped wire crate growls loudly and swipes his giant paw at nothing in particular. Burke is unfazed, studying an EKG print-out)
All I gotta say is, I'm glad he spends all day in his discount cage. If he should ever break out of that rickety thing I'd be a dead man. And I'm a gay doctor working IN a hospital. Sweet nature's fury!
And, SCENE.
Again, I have very little grounds for offering my advice, but I'm just calling it as I see it - After all, "Throw Mama From the Train" had Ann Ramsey in it, while Estelle Getty was in "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!" Couldn't let that go.ᅠ

quote:10 ANSWERS FOR ANDREW MILLER
In tandem with their new MTV series, "I'm From Rolling Stone", rollingstone.com is holding a weekly contest to find a young, aspiring rock journalist who's written ten great interview questions for the artist of their choosing. The latest winner is Andrew Miller, 22, who's posed his questions to me. Below are my responses. In the spirit of Rock N Roll, I gave myself a 20 minute time limit with which to complete the interview. Congratulations, Andrew. You're well on your way to working for an entertainment magazine. Your next task is to learn how to write an album review that both praises and condemns in frustratingly equal measure.
1. So, now the squeaky clean guy who once penned the lyric "bubble-gum tongue" is a weed enthusiast?
Not anymore. How can I explain this succinctly? Sometimes you have to experiment with an updated design for yourself before you realize the original design never stopped working for you. Rolling Stone is like your older brother's cool friend, and you'll be surprised what you'll do to get Keith with the Camaro to like you.
2. Which genre's artists do you find most intimidating to work with, hip-hop or blues?
Blues, easily. Hip-Hop is still a flexible art form. It's where blues was fifty years ago. The commandments of the blues are written in stone.
3. Fill in the blank: Over the years, I've seen my fanbase...
...come and go according to the music I'm making and what moves (or doesn't move) them. I'm okay with that open-door policy. You can step in or out anytime you like and you won't get hassled upon re-entry.
4. You've [offered] your guitar services on tracks by the Dixie Chicks and Rob Thomas. Any requests you've turned down?
Believe it or not, I don't really judge whether or not I'm going to play on someone's album based on their credentials... I'm listening for a space in the song that my sensibilities will sit right with. When you get together on another artist's record, you're both at each other's mercy.
5. You're set to appear on a track off T.I.'s upcoming album, "T.I. vs. T.I.P." Compare the recording studio experiences with T.I.'s camp compared to your own. What went on, exactly?
I never worked with T.I. Here's the back story to that Wikipedia nugget: I was a guest on TRL and happened to get my hands on the list of goofy, un Andrew-Miller-like questions I was going to be asked before I walked on set. One of the questions was "Who do you like more, T.I. or [I forgot the other southern rap artist]?" So I snuck to the bathroom and searched "T.I." on my Blackberry. I memorized as much information as I could and then announced that we were working together. I like that Damien Fahey boy, I just don't like getting slapped with the sweaty glove of irony on national televison.
6. Ever purchase a Jessica Simpson album?
I lisen to most new music released every week.
7. You've been dabbling in stand-up at the Comedy Cellar in NYC. Describe the first set you bombed.
You mean "set" as in just one? I'm not done bombing. I'm still clearing out a life's worth of "is that funny?" to which the answer is usually "at least not the way you said it, it's not."
8. Are there any songs you go back and listen and think, What the hell was that about? That was terrible.?
There's a song on Heavier Things called "New Deep". Looking back on it, I think I thought I knew what I meant but the idea is a bit undercooked. And slightly nonsensical. You can't win em all.
9. Your lyrical matter is usually wide-ranging. On Continuum, you sing about fear of parents dying (Stop This Train), political dissent (Belief) and even our generation's abundant apathy (Waiting on the World to Change.) But what's something you refuse to sing about?
I refuse to ever write a song about ANY trappings of fame. That's like your head crowing inside your ass, only set to music. Lots of people think Vultures is about fame and the entertainment industry, but it's not. It's more about where my confidence comes from.
10. You turn 30 in October. What will be the worst part about seeing your 20s go away?
There are lots of very invasive tests that doctors like to administer to men in their thirties. These tests usually result in a ride home with the radio off and very little blinking.
