Betonnen ballen in vulkaan gedumpt
JAVA - Op het Indonesische eiland Java zijn ingenieurs erin geslaagd grote ballen beton in een uitbarstende moddervulkaan te laten vallen. Hiermee moet de modderstroom, die honderden huizen heeft overstroomd, worden tegengegaan.
Op de site van de Leeuwarder Courant staat ook nog een kort filmpje erover.

Emergency plans have been put into operation after two new craters opened on the summit of the volcanic Italian island of Stromboli.
One of the new lava streams created on the island, just north of Sicily, has already started flowing into the sea.
Coastguard patrol boats have been deployed and the population of 750 people has been urged to stay away from the danger areas.
The last major eruption in 2002 caused a collapse that led to a small tsunami.
The wave reached 10 metres (33ft) high and caused serious damage to Stromboli village on the north of the island.
'Clearing zones'
The BBC's Christian Fraser in Rome says the new lava flow is heading down the west flank of the volcano and at the moment poses little risk. But experts say it has to be watched closely.

A member of the civil defence authorities for the Aeolian Islands told Reuters news agency: "There's a general alert. The emergency services are monitoring the situation, clearing zones at risk.

The volcano, which rises 2,000 metres from the ocean floor, has been active for the past 2,000 years.
Most eruptions consist of gas explosions that hurl small blobs of lava over the crater rim. There are several explosions each hour.
The larger eruptions and lava flows are less frequent.
The one in December 2002 forced the closure of the island to visitors for a number of months.

Ben wel tot bijna 5000 meter op de cotopaxi geweest. Op de top sta je het dichst bij de zon!, maar dat is het helaas niet geworden.
Ik heb de Tungurahua wel een aswolk die lucht in zien blazen. Zag er heel mooi uit. ben benieuwd welke keer hij nu uitbarst. In augustus ging het voor Banos de goede kant op. Banos ligt aan de voet maar wordt beschermd door een extra bergkam, mocht het die kant op gaan. Wel vlucht iedereen weg, maar de huizen zijn dan wel plat. Veel boeren en hele kleine plaatsen waren getroffen. Ik hoop dat hij nu niet uitbarst. al is deze 'minder erg' dan wanneer de cotopaxi uitbarst

AMSTERDAM - Een deel van Nederland loopt het risico getroffen te worden door een vulkanische uitbarsting in Duitsland. Een slapende vulkaan in het Eifel-gebied bij Keulen zou de Duitsers plotseling kunnen verrassen, zo waarschuwen onderzoekers.
Het is 12.900 jaar geleden dat de vulkaan bij het Laacher meer geëxplodeerd is, maar in Bild verwijst professor Ulrich Schreiber naar het huidige gevaar: „Een plotselinge uitbarsting is ook nu op elk ogenblik mogelijk. De risico's worden onderschat!”. Ook professor Hans-Ulrich Schmincke veronderstelt dat er een nieuwe fase van activiteit aan zit te komen. Dit zou veroorzaakt worden door opstijgende CO2 bij het Laacher meer, wat zorgt voor een bedreigend rumoer in de aardkorst. Daardoor groeit de kans op een uitbarsting.
Ter geruststelling betwijfelen andere deskundigen of het risico daadwerkelijk zo groot is. „Met vulkanen kan het inderdaad vrij snel gaan, maar je kan ook vrij snel de Lotto winnen”, aldus vulkanoloog Holger Paulick. Seismoloog Klaus-Günther Hinzen bevestigt ook dat het scenario mogelijk is, maar dat er op dit moment geen aanwijzingen zijn voor een mogelijke uitbarsting en Heinz Lempertz, directeur van de Duitse Vulkanologische Maatschappij, noemt het zelfs „een sprookje” dat deze slapende vulkaan ongemerkt wakker kan worden.
Maar tjee, wat was die Laacherseet een mega uitbarsting 12900 jaar geleden.
Waar je ook graaft in nederland, overal zijn sporen houtskool te vinden. Het lijkt erop dat hier toen alle vegetatie is weggebrand. Die uitbarsting liet niet alleen z'n sporen na in bijna de helft van Europa, maar er waren ook enorme klimatologische gevolgen. Een ernstige koude periode van 1200 jaar die nu bekend staat als het jonge Dryas. In de bodem vind je hier de sporen van zandafzetting door verstuiving in de wind. Het jonge dekzand.
Een poolwoestijn was het hier toen.
