TREY SPRUANCE's description of the equipment setup at Mr. Bungle shows...
"I use a POD direct, going through a spring reverb for the clean sound - and a Marshall JMP1 direct for the dirty. That's it - totally bare-bones. I know the guitar is a pretty visual instrument and all, but literally %95 of what I do in the band has to do with production, programming and keyboard arranging - there's very little time to fuck around with the guitar.
"All of those keyboards (Jeff/Roto's, and Bar's) are hooked up via MIDI to my K2500. There are three to five total keymaps per song (one for each keyboard, sometimes two on Roto's channel, and three in the case of Robots). Some of these keymaps are 32 layers deep with different up to 38 programmed sounds and samples on ONE KEYMAP. Each keymap is divided up into "zones" where these parts can be grouped strategically, and played once all the locations are memorized.
"... For instance, on Sweet Charity, Roto's Keyboard (triggering Midi Channel 1 on mine) accesses the appropriate keymap (assigned to his channel). The first two notes (E0 and F0) are the vibes chords, sampled from our record. The F#, G and G# are the pedal steel chords that play simultaneously with the vibes, but in different combinations. Ends of samples are looped and then release is smoothed out so things won't be choppy. After depressing a Midi function switch (which activates one of his two keymaps in the song) he switches to the uppermost octave to play the string chords (sounds I programmed played naturally as chords) at the first "save me" part. Bar comes in (Midi Channel 2) on his upper octave where I put a french horn sound for him to play the f horn line. When the chorus comes, I come in (Midi Channel 3) on low octaves piano (L) and high piano chords (R), Bar is playing a Harpsichord sound (R) and the Timpani counter-line (L), and Roto is now playing the French Horn line. Next, Roto covers the high string hold, and comes in playing Glockenspiel/organ sound (bossa part) after switching the Midi function key back to the other keymap on his Channel (1). Bar and I attend to other perc/guitar duties, as we will do occasionally. Next, it's Pedal Steel samples on Roto's channel for the "perfect photographs" part - the samples are broken up so he can rhythmically adjust to the idiosyncracies of Mike and Willie during the part, and not sound like some bullshit cyber music. Next, I come in with a low piano (L) and high strings playing chords (R) as Roto continues the broken-up, looped and tapered Pedal Steel Samples playing different voicings of the same chords. Then it's the chorus again - but of course in a very different key, thus a wider "zone" of harpsichord/Timpani (Bar) & french horn (Roto) than before. On to the "save me" part, where Roto once again must access the strings on the other keymap on his channel (1) by depressing his Midi function key. At the end of this section, on his last chord, he comes in with some Tubular Bells and ends up playing choir chords as well - all three at once at one point - while Bar leads the next part (chorus) in with the Timpani, and it's back to the Piano for me, French Horn for Roto and Harpsichord and Timpani for Bar. Modulated, and therefore 'zone-expanded', of course.
"That's one song - to complicate matters, we all have to sing during all this, and switch off with other instruments, like all of Bar's percussion parts. Yeah, there are a couple of little guitar parts in there I gotta play, but not enough for me to think about too much - it's so fucking EASY in comparasin. Pretty much every song is like this.
"I haven't even brought up the routing: 8 seperate outputs - 1 & 2 for played parts like strings/organs/pianos; 3 & 4 for samples; 5 & 6 for "effected" parts (one side goes through spring reverb - digital effects can suck me) for things like French Horns, oboes and drenched piano or string parts. Then there's the EMU (7 & 8) for all the older stuff (debut and Disco Volante), which is controlled via my keyboard and Bar's (through mine). Roto disables Midi on these songs and plays internal sounds on his keyboard - he also has to switch two AB boxes that switch between his keyboard's L/R and 1 and 2 from my K2500 (this saves channel space - we are a 40 channel live band, and that's stripped down, believe me). Both keyboard brains have to be loaded. Sometimes, if we construct the set right I can load one while the other is engaged, to save time. Luckily, when we run out of hands to do things, Mike can cover some of the parts on his sampler - these are usually sound effect parts. Some of the sounds on his little Roland keyboard are pretty good, so if he's not already "doing something else" (singing doesn't count) we can usually find a way to divy up the parts so that he can cover something.
"If you think this all sounds crazy, wait until I post California album production notes and full live show arrangement details at WoM. It will happen soon enough.
"Thanks for caring enough to wade through all this junk,.. jeezus!"

Following Masada Guitars, Volume 2 is an eclectic and powerful collection of almost two dozen Masada classics artfully arranged by some of the downtown scene’s most creative performers. De test presses gaan wel naar de band en dat soort persingen zijn heel soms via eBay te krijgen. Songstress is one of many guests on ex-Faith No More singer’s pop album.
Even though he’s slowed down in his golden years, James Brown will always be known as the hardest working man in show business. And while Mike Patton’s not exactly gunning for the infamous nickname, he’s definitely been giving Brown a run for his money.
Patton — of Faith No More, Fantômas, Tomahawk and about 30 other deranged and wondrous projects — has to work. It’s what he does. In addition to running his Ipecac Records label, the anti-rock-star rock star’s been putting the finishing touches on the self-titled debut from Peeping Tom, his four-years-in-the-making, long-overdue multi-genre pop masterpiece.
Oh, and he’s also tracking vocals for three tunes that’ll appear on Massive Attack’s forthcoming seventh album, Weather Underground. The one song he’s finished thus far for the trip-hoppers “is like a really slow, dirty ballad with mostly acoustic guitar,” he said.
Plus he’s composing soundtracks for two films (one being friend Melanie Lee’s “Pinion”), he recently lent his voice box to the in-development PlayStation 3 game “The Darkness,” and he’s been writing material for the next Tomahawk LP.
And then there’s that trip he’s planning to Italy, where — with help from a string orchestra and a full choir — he’ll record an album’s worth of “my arrangements of ’60s Italian pop tunes, which should be fun.” He’ll also spend some time with composer Eyvind Kang for a collaborative classical choir piece.
That’s just the stuff he can remember off the top of his head. “You know, I always forget about some of the things I’ve done, because you do ‘em, and sometimes they don’t come out and … most of it’s almost like daily chores or something,” Patton explained. “You check it off your list and then it’s gone.”
And when your list’s as long as Mike’s, you can’t be expected to remember every little thing you’ve been involved with. Besides, the last four months of Patton’s life have been devoted exclusively to finishing the first of three Peeping Tom records in the works, which is due May 30.
“I’m overjoyed to finally have this out of my hair,” Patton said. “It’s almost cathartic for me — more than any other project I’ve had. These projects, they’re almost like problems. You have them on your work table and they’re really fun for a minute, and then you get sick of ‘em and you finish ‘em off and move on to something else. This one has lingered for a lot of different reasons.”
One of the reasons has been major-label trickery. “There were offers from major labels, and I made the grave error of entertaining some of those offers, and that cost me about a year of wining, dining, singing and dancing and ultimately, I was left holding my n–s,” he said. “And I deserved it. I should have known better.”
Plus, Patton recruited a laundry list of collaborators, sending tracks across the globe to have other artists add their personal touches. “It was a melee getting all this stuff back,” he said.
The initial 11-track Peeping Tom outing will feature a spate of underground and mainstream experimentalists, including Kid Koala; Odd Nosdam; Doseone and Jel of the Bay Area hip-hop collective Anticon; Dale Crover of the Melvins; Massive Attack; Gorillaz beat maestro Dan “The Automator” Nakamura; human beatbox Rahzel the Godfather of Noyze; Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs; Amon Tobin; Brazilian chanteuse Bebel Gilberto; Brooklyn’s Dub Trio; DJ Disk of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz; and rapper Kool Keith.
“It’s very streamlined, very slick — it’s a groove record,” Patton said. “I used programmers and producers from the electronic world and the hip-hop world, in some cases. If there’s a sound to [the record], it leans into those worlds. There are simple structures. I’m singing, there’s lyrics — to me, it’s a pop record. It’s something I’d want to turn on the radio and hear.”
One of the album’s highlights, Patton said, is “Sucker,” which boasts the pipes of Norah Jones. “It’s a pretty vulgar song,” he said, laughing. “You don’t recruit someone like that unless you … I mean, I had something real specific in mind for her, and I wanted to take her out of her element and put her in a new environment and make it exciting, and she loved it. She did great. But yeah, you won’t recognize Norah. She’s cussing her ass off. It’s insane. She’s like a cruel vamp, and it’s super sexy, hot and, yeah, cruel.”
After Peeping Tom’s unveiling, Patton said he’ll reunite with Nakamura to begin work on the second Lovage record — the follow-up 2001’s lounge-flavored Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By. He said there’s no word yet on whether Elysian Fields frontwoman Jennifer Charles would be reprising her role as the Cher to his Sonny, but discussions are ongoing.
And Tomahawk are in “go mode,” he added. “There are three or four tunes for the record that are done, and we’ll be in the studio by the end of the year. Most of the music’s based on old Native American motifs. It’s going to be a real quiet, strange record.”

quote:MIKE PATTON: No FAITH NO MORE Reunion — For Now - May 26, 2006
Former FAITH NO MORE frontman Mike Patton recently spoke to Reuters about the release of his "Peeping Tom" project, a melody-based record that fuses hip-hop and alternative rock.
"This is more song-oriented. I needed some balance," Patton told Reuters in a recent interview. "A lot of melodic song ideas were seeping up and I had not outlet for them. I just go through phases, and now it's 'Peeping Tom' season."
The album, due on May 30 on Patton's Ipecac label, features a slew of collaborators such as British trip-hop group MASSIVE ATTACK, rapper Kool Keith, human beatbox Rhazel and Grammy-winning singer Norah Jones.
The singer said he sometimes reminisces about FAITH NO MORE's good old days, when they used to tour stadiums with METALLICA and GUNS N' ROSES, but not with regret.
"They're good because they ended," he said. "If they were still going, they'd be the sad new days. It was really hard to spit the last record ("Album of the Year") out. I think it stands up to any of our others, but I was looking in the crystal ball and I could see where we were going. The best thing to do was to end on a good note."
Despite occasional offers to regroup, Patton said he'd never agree to a FAITH NO MORE reunion.
"Every four or five years, some Svengali who thinks he can change the world comes with a briefcase full of cash and makes a crazy offer," he said. "And it's not easy to (refuse). It would be very easy for some of us to rehearse for a couple of days, smile and cash the check. I'm not at that point. I got enough things on my plate. Maybe if he comes with two briefcases full of money..."

PEEPING TOM are scheduled to perform on NBC-TV's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" tonight, May 26. The project's self-titled debut CD is available for streaming at www.myspace.com/peepingtomispatton.

This powerful rock unit features three of his most illustrious, longtime cohorts who have worked together in bands such as Naked City, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle and Electric Masada and are keenly in tune with Zorn’s language and aesthetic. Musicians are always at their best in Zorn projects and Moonchild is no exception. You have never heard these players as up front, on the edge or as inspired as they are here, raging through eleven pieces of terrifying intensity. Drawing on preverbal language and the primal power of rock music, this is Torture Garden with an alchemical twist—spontaneous, complex and evocative. Eleven new Zorn compositions executed with a ritualistic passion that will take your breath away.

Two, actually—I just did another one last week. I was in New York rehearsing with the X-Ecutioners—we did a gig in Portugal the other day—and Zorn had already written the second installment of this Moonchild project. Just like the first one, we recorded it in a day, and it’s amazing—even crazier than the last one. He gave me one of the most severe studio workouts I think I’ve ever had. It was nine hours straight of screaming at the top of my lungs in every possible register. I got some really intense migraines, actually—it got a little scary.

quote:Anonymous
Tomahawk’s third release, Anonymous, links the outfit with the Native American culture that bore its name. A thirteen-track album that reverentially explores and reinterprets the darker, more recessed ancestral music created by North America’s indigenous people, the title reflects the countless individuals who contributed to these songs but went un-credited throughout history.
At the turn of the millennium, Duane Denison (U.S.S.A, ex-Jesus Lizard) toured with Hank Williams III, frequently finding himself on Indian Reservations. “I was somewhat disappointed by the Native bands.” Duane explains, “They were usually very conventional, kind of blues and country type stuff, or too much like 'new age' music. I figured there must be native music somewhere that was more aggressive, spookier, and more kinetic.” Duane began to research the culture’s music; about a year into his research he found books that were written around the time of Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency, a period in U.S. history when Indian culture and artifacts were in vogue. The books, dated to the early 20th century, recorded transcriptions of the songs contained herein. The titles: “Totem,” “Mescal Rite 1,” “Song of Victory” are all true to the names uncovered by the people who originally transcribed them, although Duane says “Red Fox” was altered to be more accessible. One song, “Long, Long Weary Day,” is a non-Native American “parlor song” song of the same time period, and also un-credited.
Now a three piece, Tomahawk recorded Anonymous in two-parts. Duane Denison and John Stanier (Battles, Ex-Helmet) recorded guitars and drums (respectively) in Nashville while Mike Patton (Peeping Tom, Fantômas, Ex-Faith No More) added vocals and samples at Vulcan Studios in San Francisco.

Take note if you are a movie fan. There is a little film coming out in December called "I Am Legend" that features our very own Mike Patton. It also stars some actor named Will Smith. The tricky part is, you won't see Mike, but you'll hear him. He is the voice of the creatures in the movie. That is right, the evil screams and howls coming from the "creatures" will be courtesy of Mike. Seems he is getting a lot of requests to do evil/monster/zombie noises and sounds. Remember he is the Darkness in the game of the same name and even shows up in the game Portal as well!!!
2 thumbs up! Wonder if there is an academy award category for creature voices???
