LISBONA, 23 giugno 2004 - Troppo mediocre per guadagnare i quarti dell'Europeo, la Germania si fa battere dalle riserve della sorprendente Repubblica Ceca (unica squadra a punteggio pieno) e saluta il Portogallo senza alibi. Dopo l'illusorio vantaggio di Ballack al 21' p.t., i tedeschi (che non vincono una gara all'Europeo da otto anni, cioè dalla finale '96 proprio contro i cechi) vengono prima raggiunti da una punizione di Heinz al 30' e poi superati, dopo aver sprecato l'impossibile contro un avversario che pareva rassegnato, da una fiammata di Baros al 77'. Ai quarti oltre ai cechi (nella gara che sognavamo di giocare noi e invece vedrà in campo la Danimarca) va dunque l'Olanda, che ha superato 3-0 la Lettonia e si è guadagnata la Svezia.

LA GARA - Già sicuro del primo posto nel girone, il c.t. dei cechi Bruckner schiera appena due titolari, di cui uno (Galasek) è anche l'unico ammonito dei suoi. Voeller risponde con un 3-4-2-1 che risulterà offensivo solo sulla carta. Alle spalle dell'unica punta Kuranyi giocano Schneider e Ballack, ma solo quest'ultimo si dimostrerà degno di andare avanti. I tedeschi infatti si confermano a corto di idee e di mobilità. Manca soprattutto chi abbia il cambio di passo per sorprendere l'avversario. Anche se giocano le seconde linee, la Repubblica Ceca conferma che quando una squadra è compatta e soprattutto ha un gioco, i risultati arrivano anche quando le stelle siedono in panchina. La prodezza di Ballack potrebbe spaccare il match in due, invece Plasil a destra non fa rimpiangere Poborski, Tyce e Galasek presidiano la zona centrale e Vachousek rimane ordinato a sinistra. Davanti Lokvenc non ha l'intelligenza tattica di Koller né Heinz la rapidità esplosiva di Baros, ma contro questa Germania basta e avanza. Proprio Heinz pennella la punizione che vale l'1-1 all'intervallo.

Nella ripresa Voeller ci prova con Podolski al posto di Frings, Bruckner risponde con Hubschman per Galasek. La Germania, complice il 2-0 dell'Olanda sulla Lettonia, è costretta a vincere e si getta in avanti, pur confusamente. Piace soprattutto Lahm, che a sinistra sfonda spesso e volentieri, ma i suoi rifornimenti vengono puntualmente sprecati dall'inguardabile Kuranyi. Ballack capisce che deve cantare e portare la croce, ma sulla seconda grande occasione da rete (palo pieno) Schneider la fa grossa e manca il più facile dei tap-in. Complice il calo di alcuni uomini, la Repubblica Ceca rincula senza battere ciglio e si salva più per demeriti altrui che per meriti propri. A Bruckner basta comunque inserire Poborsky e Baros per svelare il bluff tedesco. Sul primo affondo dell'attaccante del Liverpool Worns e Nowotny si aprono come il mar Rosso e Kahn non può nulla. E' il gol che chiude di fatto il match e riapre i rimpianti azzurri. Crudele infatti il contrasto tra la festa degli olandesi quando vengono informati della qualificazione e il pianto di Cassano il giorno prima alla notizia della mezza torta scandinava.

LA GARA - Non c'è storia nel catino roccioso di Braga. A giocare è solo l'Olanda. Troppo evidente il gap tecnico con la Lettonia, schiacciata nel primo tempo nella sua trequarti dagli arancioni che ci provano in tutti i modi, dominando in ogni settore del campo. Gli ispiratori sono soprattutto Robben, Davids e Seedorf, ma a mancare è l'affondo decisivo. A cominciare da Ruud Van Nistelrooy che sbaglia l'impossibile, ciò che in Premier League gli riesce a occhi chiusi. Ma è radiopanchina il punto di riferimento. Il gol di Ballack che porta in vantaggio la Germania sulla Repubblica Ceca a Lisbona potrebbe abbattere un toro anche se, proprio Van Nistelrooy, su rigore, porta in vantaggio l'Olanda che continua a macinare gioco contro un avversario inesistente, perché non si sa mai. In un primo tempo dove l'emozione latita, il vero brivido lo regala il pareggio della Repubblica Ceca. Poco prima del 2-0 di Van Nistelrooy che fa doppietta da posizione dubbia. Il primo tempo va in archivio con un dato che la dice lunga: 71 per cento di possesso palla olandese contro il 29 lettone.

La ripresa, almeno all'inizio, ha il pregio di mostrare al mondo l'orgoglio lettone. Rubins, soprattutto, fa capire di non essere uno sprovveduto, impegnando seriamente due volte Van der Sar. L'Olanda si limita a controllare, senza spremersi tanto, così fatalmente legata alla sorte germanica. L'atteggiamento è scettico, quasi non volesse credere al flop tedesco. Il conservatore Advocaat toglie Van der Mayed per il vecchio Overmars, mentre il c.t. lettone Starkovs regala un po' di gloria a Pahars che rileva il molliccio attaccante Verpakovskis. La standing ovation è invece tutta per Van Nistelrooy che lascia il posto a Makaay. Esce anche Davids per Sneijder, ma è da Lisbona che giunge la notizia più bella per gli olandesi: il gol del vantaggio ceco. "Allora è vero", sembrano dire gli arancioni. L'entusiasmo è così contagioso che l'Olanda dà vita a una storica melina. Produttiva come accadeva negli anni Settanta dello scorso secolo; e che porta al 3-0 di Makaay servito meravigliosamente da Robben, il migliore in campo; talentuoso e inesauribile. Poi il delirio: la certezza della qualificazione con il crollo della Germania.

De Boer in
As expected, Dutch coach Dick Advocaat made two changes from the side that lost 3-2 against the Czech Republic, bringing in Michael Reiziger at right-back to replace the suspended John Heitinga, while Frank De Boer made his first start of the tournament for the injured Wilfred Bouma, his 111th cap. Aleksandrs Starkovs kept faith with the same Latvia eleven who started the draw against Germany on Saturday.

Lively start
It was the first time these two countries had met and the Netherlands went on the offensive straight from the kick-off. Within a minute Van Nistelrooij headed a Giovanni van Bronckhorst throw-in into the path of Clarence Seedorf on the edge of the Latvian penalty box, but the shot was high. Maris Verpakovskis demonstrated his lightning pace at the other end, outstripping De Boer and Jaap Stam before firing a shot into the side-netting.

Kolinko saves
Phillip Cocu tested Latvia goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko on 12 minutes with a powerful shot from just outside the area, but the FC Rostov man got down smartly to turn the ball round the post. A minute later, Van Nistelrooij should have opened the scoring after a sumptuous pass from Arjen Robben had put him straight through on goal, but having rounded Kolinko he somehow contrived to hit his shot back into the goalkeeper's chest.

Netherlands ahead
His next opportunity was altogether easier to convert when on 26 minutes Vitalis Astafjevs was adjudged to have tripped Edgar Davids in the box. Van Nistelrooij stepped up and coolly slotted the ball low into the corner of the net for his third goal of the tournament.

Van Nistelrooij again
With news filtering from the stands that the Czech Republic had equalised against Germany, the Dutch players gained even more zip and doubled their lead. A free-kick from Seedorf wide on the left was met by Cocu at the back-post and his downward header was nodded over the line by Van Nistelrooij, who joined Wayne Rooney as joint top scorer in the finals so far.

Latvian chances
Latvia came out of their defensive shell at start of the second half and went close on two occasions. On 47 minutes, Andrejs Prohorenkovs combined well with Verpakovskis, but his shot was comfortably saved by Edwin van der Sar. Rubins went close again two minutes later when he cut in from the right but his effort deflected wide.

Celebrations begin
Van Nistelrooij could have had his hat-trick just after the hour mark but his low shot was saved by Kolinko. His team then thought they had scored a third on 73 minutes when Seedorf tapped the ball over the line after Kolinko had failed to deal with a Cocu free-kick, but the referee ruled that an infringement had taken place before the ball crossed the line. Not that it mattered. By now everyone in the stadium knew that Milan Baro¨ had put the Czech Republic ahead against Germany and the icing on the cake came with Makaay's goal six minutes from time after a superb jinking run by Robben.

Holland swarmed forward from the first whistle and fully deserved their 2-0 lead at half time, although the lead came courtesy of a dubious penalty award.

Ruud van Nistelrooy put the spot-kick away before heading in a second, and substitute Roy Makaay put the gloss on the result late on, as news was filtering through that the Germans were losing in Lisbon.

The Dutch started the game brightly and took little time in pushing the Latvians back, and skipper Philip Cocu fired in a low shot on 11 minutes that Alexanders Kolinko did very well to turn away at full stretch.

Van Nistelrooy broke clear a minute later after a neat ball from Arjen Robben, but the Manchester United man was denied by another good save when one-on-one with the keeper.

It was all Holland as the Oranje camped out in the opposition half of the field, with Clarence Seedorf going close with a powerful free kick.

The breakthrough was expected but came in controversial circumstances on 27 minutes when Davids tumbled in the box under a nothing challenge from Latvia skipper Vitaly Astafjevs.

Kim Milton Nielsen pointed to the spot immediately, although the decision was dubious to say the least, but van Nistelrooy did not argue as he stepped up and slotted home from 12 yards.

The lead was doubled on 34 minutes when Seedorf swung in a free kick from the left for Cocu who arrived late at the far post.

The captain nodded the ball back unselfishly and van Nistelrooy was inevitably on hand to nod home past Kolinko from close range to make it 2-0.

The half time lead was richly deserved against a desperately disappointing Latvian side, but they emerged for the second period a different team.

Aleksandr Starkovs must have said something inspiring during the break, as Latvia came out determined to show some pride.

Andrejs Rubins latched on to the end of a sweeping move a minute after the restart, but he looked nervous approaching from the left and his shot was saved by Edwin van der Sar.

A corner minutes later ended at the feet of Valentins Lobanovs, and his shot went through a number of legs and whistled inches past the post.

The resistance did not last, however, and van Nistelrooy had a good chance to claim his hat-trick on the hour mark but his powerful shot was turned away by another smart save by Kolinko.

Van Nistelrooy was eventually replaced by Makaay, and he showed that he could hit the back of the net too by making it 3-0 in the last ten minutes.

Chelsea-bound winger Robben looked lively all night and he produced a good piece of trickery to set up Makaay, who dummied before firing in a powerful left foot shot that gave Kolinko no chance.

The news coming through that Germany were 2-1 down in Lisbon added to the party atmosphere in Braga as the Dutch fans enjoyed the closing minutes knowing their European Championship adventure would move to Algarve on Saturday to face Sweden.
