This refrain captures the spirit projected by the British heavy-metal band Iron Maiden ever since it released its self-titled anthem 23 years ago. But now that all six members have reached middle age, the Iron Maiden juggernaut is showing signs of wear and tear.
Recently, the group announced that its current world tour -- which includes stops at Shoreline Amphitheatre on Thursday and Chronicle Pavilion at Concord on Aug. 29 -- will be its last extensive tour.
``We all have families, and we want to have lives apart from music,'' says Bruce Dickinson, Iron Maiden's vocalist, in a telephone interview. ``Nicko McBrain, our drummer, will be 50 on this tour. I'm the youngest guy in the band. I'm 45. But we're still performing like we were when we were 25. It's started to take its toll on everybody's body.
``Steve Harris has got a crushed vertebra from running around on stage all these years with a huge bass guitar. Some days he can hardly walk. If we go on and try to play five nights a week in arenas for months at a time, this band is going to be unable to function.''
Because of its intensely physical show, Iron Maiden tends to ``sweat buckets'' onstage, Dickinson says. But the notion of toning down performances seems alien to the group. And Dickinson insists Iron Maiden has never sounded better. ``We're on fire,'' he says.
The band experienced a musical and spiritual rebirth four years ago, when Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith rejoined the group. Smith had been away for nine years, Dickinson for six. The current lineup includes all the members who made the band a favorite during the '80s, as well as guitarist Janick Gers, who replaced Smith in 1990. It's now a three-guitar lineup with charter member Dave Murray still on board after 27 years.
In the States, Iron Maiden is one of the few metal bands still capable of headlining shows at large arenas. In Europe, where there's still a thriving metal scene in many areas, including Germany and Scandinavia, Iron Maiden's popularity is even greater.
``Europe has always been our strongest area,'' says Dickinson, adding that on a recent tour they ``played to 700,000 people in 28 days. We were outselling the Rolling Stones in Scandinavia. People want to see us because they've heard that we're the source material for metal stuff.''
In the United States, classic metal groups such as Judas Priest have been overshadowed for a decade now by hard rock-metal bands incorporating elements of rap, grunge, punk or industrial music.
``People talk about freedom here in the United States,'' says Dickinson, ``but you only have freedom if you have a choice. People over here really aren't made aware of the choices they have in terms of music because of the corporate control of the concert business and radio. Everybody is segmented. Depending on what age group you slot into, you're put into a little stall, and you have blinkers put on you.''
The new DVD ``Iron Maiden: Visions of the Beast'' is a good source for those interested in the evolution of the band since its first album in 1980. The DVD presents more than three hours of images, music and extras. The band is set to release a new album, ``Dance of Death,'' on Sept. 1. It will include the first Iron Maiden song to feature only acoustic guitars.
Dickinson's powerhouse voice earned him the nickname ``the human air raid siren.'' About 10 years ago, he took up flying as a hobby and later landed a job piloting commercially for Britain's Astraeus. Today, he flies 737s for the company when not working with Iron Maiden, and whenever possible, he also flies the band around during tours in a light, twin-engine aircraft.

The New Iron Maiden Lineup Cuts Up at a Recent Press ConferenceAfter four years as a sextet, venerable U.K. metal pioneers Iron Maiden have returned to a 5-man lineup with the replacement of embattled drummer Michael (Nicko) McBrain by the Roland Corporation's DR-770 Dr. Rhythm drum machine.
Band founder, bassist and chief songwriter Steve Harris explains that the move is likely a temporary one. This band has always been about looking out for your mates. All the way back to the Soundhouse Tapes days. If you don't believe me, just ask Dennis Stratton. That's why we felt it best not to put another chap behind the sticks while Nicko sorts out his legal trouble. Besides, what with Clive Burr suffering from MS, we couldn't really keep it in the family this time. At least not unless we slowed the onstage energy back down to Blaze Bayley level again.
Singer Bruce Dickinson opined about the glaring lack of credible fiftyish British metal drummers-for-hire today. Cozy Powell? Not bloody likely after leaving an auto accident with one fewer head than Rick Allen. Aynsley Dunbar's too old, and Carl Palmer too uptight. We'd give Jeff Rich a ring, but no one seems to be able to find his number. They're getting so scarce we actually considered letting a Yank in our ranks. Then we thought better of it.
The DR-770 Dr. Rhythm In a Reflective MomentGuitarist Dave Murray opened his mouth as if to say something for the first time in 23 years of fame, but it turned out he was simply yawning at Dickinson's bloviation.
The search for a new drummer began after McBrain was charged with 3rd degree assault and 2nd degree reckless endangerment stemming from an incident in Jones Beach, NY before a recent Maiden show. McBrain is accused of driving his new Jaguar into security guard Mark Robinson, who refused McBrain entry to the concert venue. Robinson suffered minor injuries and declined comment for this story.
McBrain's lawyer, Jon Wiederhorn of the Laguna Beach-based firm Wiederhorn & Kennedy, explained to Infernal Combustion that counsel is attempting to get the case dismissed on grounds of defendant incomprehensibility.
Infernal Combustion has obtained a transcript of the statement McBrain gave NYPD officers after the incident:

The tapes in question were recently delivered to the CIA to determine their authenticity as true audio documents recorded in the English language.
A Night Out With the LadsLooking forward, Maiden continue the westward leg of their North American tour, simply happy to be back on the road. The DR-770 Dr. Rhythm has already begun rehearsing with the band, and has apparently developed a working relationship with Maiden's Yamaha 01V96 digital mixing console, which is used to replicate Janick Gers' recorded solos in a concert setting. The DR-770 will make its formal debut on August 15 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in San Antonio.

Mike Senft of The Arizona Republic reviewed the reviewed the IRON MAIDEN/DIO/MOTÖRHEAD tour when it came to the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix Friday night (August 22)."The crowd, which had swelled to over 10,000 by the time the band took the stage, roared as Vincent Price's intonation of 'Woe to you of earth and sea,' introduced the band's opening number, the classic 'Number of the Beast'.
"Singer Bruce Dickinson could barely contain his energy, sprinting and leaping across the two-tiered stage, exhorting the crowd to scream, all the while never missing a vocal cue.
"Dickinson's voice was a little weak on 'Beast' and the second number 'The Trooper', but he got his air-raid siren cranked up after about 15 minutes and was in fine form for the rest of the show.
"Although MAIDEN's triple guitar attack was occasionally overpowering and muddy, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers and Dave Murray were in sync throughout, trading solos during 'Wicker Man'.
"While introducing the band's newest single, 'Wildest Dreams', from the forthcoming disc 'Dance of Death', Dickinson launched into a tirade against record companies and supporting MP3 downloading.
" 'Go ahead and download this song and send it to your friends, because we know that all of our fans want to hear it and will buy our album anyway,' he said.
"Eddie made a pair of appearances during the show.
"While MAIDEN played 'The Clairvoyant' from its 1988 album 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son', a giant robotic Eddie wearing royal garb strode onstage, looming over Dickinson." Read more.
