Brussels and Dublin, he said in the article, had detected a reticence, particularly from the Treasury, about a clean break with the EU, which they had exploited. In turn, May and the chancellor, Philip Hammond, had lacked the will to investigate technological solutions to the Irish border, he added.
Instead, he said the UK should seek what he termed a “Super Canada” deal, which he said would involve UK and EU regulatory bodies ensuring conformity of goods with each other’s standards, as well as zero tariffs or quotas on imports and exports and investment in technological support for customs controls.
Johnson said there was “no need for a hard border” and said checks could be carried out away from the border crossing. May has insisted that a Canada-style free trade agreement would not comply with the need to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland, forcing the UK to rely on the backstop agreed in December, which would create an unacceptable customs border down the Irish Sea.

One of Britain’s biggest food suppliers to pubs, prisons and royal palaces has held talks with customers over switching to vegetarian dishes to avoid meat shortages that could be triggered by no-deal Brexit.
Bidfood UK, which is the sole provider of food served in prisons and also supplies schools, hospitals and care homes, has approached customers about changing their menu choices as part of contingency plans for border delays.
With six months until the UK leaves the EU, growing numbers of companies are preparing for a no-deal Brexit against a backdrop of political turmoil and an impasse between London and Brussels. Firms fear a collapse in the value of the pound could push up costs, they could face a shortage of EU workers and delays at British ports could hold up deliveries.
Andrew Selley, chief executive of Bidfood UK, said the company had lined up additional warehouse space to stockpile food and drink and had discussed cutting down on meat options to avoid potential shortages.
“We’re looking at where we could switch to different products that are UK sourced. In a partnership approach with customers, [we’re] working on menu development, to say: ‘this product may not be available’.”
“A lot of meat products like chicken in the UK come from Holland and Poland, so, could you look at more non-meat dishes, vegan or vegetarian options?,” he said.
The prospect of meat shortages caused by a hard Brexit is reminiscent of Britain during the second world war, when the government encouraged families to bake vegetable Woolton pies as other meals became harder to prepare. About half of all food consumed in the UK last year came from abroad, with almost a third arriving from the EU.
Bidfood uses about 1,000 trucks to make more than 12,000 deliveries from 24 depots across the country each week. Two-thirds of its 15,000 food items are domestically sourced, but Selley said hard Brexit risked shortages of EU products including chips imported from Belgium, pasta and olive oil from Italy and meat from eastern Europe.

Images posted to social media show people accessing data of senior Tories such as Boris Johnson and Michael Gove
A serious flaw in the Conservative party’s official conference phone application has made the private data of senior party members, including cabinet ministers, accessible to anyone who logged in as a conference attendee.
Images posted to social media showed people logging in as Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and others, revealing personal information including their mobile phone numbers. The personal phone numbers and private details of Gove, Johnson’s real number and seemingly every person who registered to attend Tory conference were accessible.
Once logged into the app, users were able to both amend and make the personal details of prominent MPs public, with Twitter users claiming Johnson’s picture had been briefly changed to one featuring a pornographic image.
Gove’s picture was changed to Rupert Murdoch, his previous employer at the Times. Anyone could log in as any attendee by providing an email with no password. Many MPs had registered with their public parliamentary email addresses, making it simple for any member of the public to access their mobile number.
Commentators said the flaw raises questions over the ability of the government to harness technology to solve issues around the Irish border and customs checks. The app may also have breached data protection policy. Its privacy policy states that it “complies with … the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation”.
The breach enraged senior ministers. One Whitehall source described the error as “fucking ridiculous”. Anger was immediately aimed at Brandon Lewis, the Tory party chairman whose duties include overseeing the conference. Labour said that the mishap raised questions around national security and recommended the Tories provide basic computer training to its members. “How can we trust this Tory government with our country’s security when they can’t even build a conference app that keeps the data of their members, MPs and others attending safe and secure?” said John Trickett, the shadow Cabinet Office minister.
“The Conservative party should roll out some basic computer security training to get their house in order.”
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said it would be making inquiries about the breach and added that “organisations have a legal duty to keep personal data safe and secure”.
A Momentum spokesperson criticised the “staggering incompetence” of the Conservative party and cited the success of its own in-house app during the Labour party conference this week.
“This sums up the Tories, staggeringly incompetent and out of touch with the modern world,” they said. “They can’t even build a basic conference app without a huge data breach, and it’s terrifying that they’re in charge of the tech that runs our hospitals, schools and airports.
“Our conference app was built by a team of volunteers for next to no money, and I’m sure they’d be happy to give the Tories a few tips for next year.”
Guardian columnist Dawn Foster was among the first to notice the flaw and swiftly raised the alarm on Saturday.
“The Tory conference app allows you to log in as other people and view their contact details just with their email address, no emailed security links, and post comments as them,” she tweeted.
“They’ve essentially made every journalist, politician and attendee’s mobile number public. Fantastic.”

Nee.
