Republicans are unlikely to negotiate an alternative date and could go ahead with the hearing without her or cancel it altogether if Dr. Blasey refuses to appear and move quickly to a vote on Judge Kavanaugh's nomination. They have repeatedly stressed that Monday would be her opportunity to testify, either privately or publicly, and that they then planned to move forward with the confirmation process. They have also rejected the possibility of an F.B.I. investigation.
The apparent standoff was yet another turn in a high-stakes drama that has gripped the Capitol since Thursday, when the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee revealed that she had referred the sexual assault allegations to federal investigators. Dr. Blasey, a research psychologist in Northern California, has accused the judge of sexually assaulting her more than 30 years ago when both were teenagers, a charge that Judge Kavanaugh has categorically denied.

President Donald Trump said earlier Tuesday he feels "terribly" that Kavanaugh is facing the allegation.
"I feel so badly for him. This is not a man who deserves this," Trump told reporters at the White House. "Hopefully the woman will come forward, state her case. He will state his case," he said, adding, "We will see what happens."
Trump also said he didn't want the FBI to investigate the matter.
"I don't think the FBI should be involved because they don't want to be involved, if they wanted to be I would certainly do that," the president said. "This is not really their thing. The senators will do a good job."
However, a person familiar with the matter said the FBI did not tell the president or the White House that it doesn't want to be involved in the allegations against Kavanaugh or that it's not their thing. Met het risico dat Kavanaugh later dieper in de shit komt en vervangen gaat worden.Het enige wat Kavanaugh nu nog kan gebeuren is dat Dr. Ford op het laatste moment alsnog op komt dagen. Dit kan natuurlijk ook een bargaining chip zijn. En als haar dan gevraagd wordt, "hoe weet u dit of dat zeker", dan heeft ze haar antwoord klaar; "dit is waarom ik een FBI onderzoek wilde". Maar dat is wellicht wat vergezocht.
