Startling footage taken at Moorfields station shows an explosion on the tracks as passengers waited for their train.

The video, captured shortly before 3pm today, shows smoke billowing on to the platform before a large flame bursts from the tracks and a loud bang can be heard.

Cameron Arrowsmith said he was sitting on the platform waiting for the Hunts Cross service when he noticed small sparks.

He told the ECHO: "We sat down and waited and there was a few initial sparks and then a few flames appeared for a few moments but then that stopped.



"It went silent for about a minute and then the incident in the video happened.

"We alerted staff and left the station."

It is believed the incident could be the reason for disruption on the Northern Line this afternoon.

At around 3.30pm Merseyrail tweeted to say that services were severely disrupted and that rail replacement buses would be bought in to assist passengers.

A tweet posted shortly after 5pm said: "Due to a power supply issue services on the Northern Line remain disrupted, Rail replacement bus services are in operation.
