There’s still debate about when they were actually built.
I haven’t read the Bible in its entirety or the Talmud or the Koran, but as far as I can gather, these magnificent buildings are not mentioned in any of them. The oldest images of them from the 1500’s are childlike or badly drawn to say the least. Some of the earliest of photos look as though they could have been tampered with. Many years ago at school I read that the nose of the Sphinx was destroyed when Napoleons army used the Sphinx as target practice.
It’s also difficult to see what exactly has been renovated, restored, unearthed, excavated etc. Could it be that the Sphinx and Pyramids are still a work in progress? The Sphinx certainly looks much neater and tidier than it did in the 1920’s. How can we be so sure of how they looked originally?

I visited Cairo and the area in 1990 when the Sphinx was surrounded by scaffolding. I went inside one of the Pyramids up to the Kings Chamber.
I read somewhere that there is now doubt that these chambers were ever burial tombs. I also rode a very large old horse around the Pyramids – or I should say that the horse took me for a much faster ride than I’d expected. It was exciting but unnerving for me, given that it isn’t all nice soft fine sand to fall on – it’s sharp and coarse with quite big rocks in the way too. Anyway, it was at least extremely amusing for the old man who owned the horse.

Maybe the Pyramids were built more recently than what we have all been led to believe

Here is a wonderful documentary from 1964 about what happened when they opened the caskets.

Algemene verhaaltjes 2500BC zeggen.

They are quite impressive to see in this day and age - one of the Seven Wonders - 4500 years ago they must have been even more stunning a sight to behold, yet there doesn't seem to be many ancient writings about them.

It was meant as a joke.

By the sound of things, Herodotus (400 BC) seems to have been somewhat of an ancient, historical bullshitter....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herodotus

Some of his stories are fanciful and others inaccurate, yet he states that he is reporting only what he was told; a sizable portion of the information he provided was later confirmed by historians and archaeologists.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herodotus#Egypt
Egypt
The reliability of Herodotus' writing about Egypt is sometimes criticized.[57][m] Alan B. Lloyd argues that, as a historical document, the writings of Herodotus are seriously defective, and that he was working from "inadequate sources".[51] Nielsen writes: "Though we cannot entirely rule out the possibility of Herodotus having been in Egypt, it must be said that his narrative bears little witness to it."[52] German historian Detlev Fehling questions whether Herodotus ever traveled up the Nile River, and considers doubtful almost everything that he says about Egypt and Ethiopia.[69][53] Fehling states that "there is not the slightest bit of history behind the whole story" about the claim of Herodotus that Pharaoh Sesostris campaigned in Europe, and that he left a colony in Colchia.

Accusations of bias
Some "calumnious fictions" were written about Herodotus in a work titled On the Malice of Herodotus by Plutarch, a Chaeronean by birth, (or it might have been a Pseudo-Plutarch, in this case[b] "a great collector of slanders"), including the allegation that the historian was prejudiced against Thebes because the authorities there had denied him permission to set up a school.[75] Similarly, in a Corinthian Oration, Dio Chrysostom (or yet another pseudonymous author) accused the historian of prejudice against Corinth, sourcing it in personal bitterness over financial disappointments[76] – an account also given by Marcellinus in his Life of Thucydides.[77] In fact, Herodotus was in the habit of seeking out information from empowered sources within communities, such as aristocrats and priests, and this also occurred at an international level, with Periclean Athens becoming his principal source of information about events in Greece. As a result, his reports about Greek events are often coloured by Athenian bias against rival states – Thebes and Corinth in particular.[78]

The Histories were sometimes criticized in antiquity,[o] but modern historians and philosophers take a more positive view of Herodotus's methodology, especially those searching for a paradigm of objective historical writing. A few modern scholars have argued that Herodotus exaggerated the extent of his travels and invented his sources,[79] yet his reputation continues largely intact. Herodotus is variously considered "father of comparative anthropology",[17] "the father of ethnography",[46] and "more modern than any other ancient historian in his approach to the ideal of total history".[43]

I think it's more likely that in his writings, Herodotus was referring to the three smaller pyramids (Queens Pyramids) and then (with his legendary bullshitting skills) exaggerated the size of them. Or he only reported an exaggerated size of them, seeing how he was writing about them more than 2000 years after they were allegedly built. Neither does he mention the Sphinx, which according to traditonal history, is even older than the Great Pyramids. It seems that many modern historians doubt that Herodotus ever visited Egypt anyway!

....

I climbed up some of the steps of a few of the pyramids. It wasn't easy....then a friendly Egyptian bloke told us to climb back down. Then we also realised he was a security guard.

The tunnels and caves inside the pyramids could also be natural rock formations inside a steep hill or small mountain which have then been decorated and engineered in order to make it look like something much more impressive and sensational. Some of it looks half-finished, as if the stone mason went off for breakfast and didn't bother coming back.

https://nationalpost.com/(...)-a-structural-marvel

“The Great Pyramid, the largest in Egypt, poses a particular problem for archaeologists because its exterior has changed dramatically from its initial form: when the pyramid was first built it was covered in smooth white limestone casing. A few of these casing stones remain, but the majority were stripped away several millennia ago to be used as building materials. That makes it hard to extract much information from the rough rocks below.”
