The ensuing investigation attracted aggressive coverage by conservative media outlets — led by the Daily Caller — and prompted calls from Trump to prosecute Awan, whom the president referred to in one tweet as the “Pakistani mystery man.”
The case has highlighted Trump’s willingness to lobby for specific outcomes of federal criminal investigations and to suggest a coverup by his own Department of Justice. Trump also attempted to tie Awan to the hacking of the Democratic National Committee server — a breach that intelligence agencies have concluded was directed by Russia.
“Our Justice Department must not let Awan & Debbie Wasserman Schultz off the hook,” he tweeted last month mentioning the Florida Democrat and onetime chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, after a court filing indicated prosecutors were in plea negotiations. “The Democrat I.T. scandal is a key to much of the corruption we see today. They want to make a ‘plea deal’ to hide what is on their Server. Where is Server? Really bad!”
Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Columbia did not mention Trump or any media publications by name in the agreement.
But the agreement included an exhaustive list of “public allegations” that prosecutors investigated and shot down, including that investigators took custody of the House Democratic server.
“Particularly, the Government has found no evidence that your client illegally removed House data from the House network or from House Members’ offices, stole the House Democratic Caucus Server, stole or destroyed House information technology equipment, or improperly accessed or transferred government information, including classified or sensitive information.”
The office that conducted the investigation is led by Trump-nominated U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu. Awan was released from electronic monitoring and will be free pending his sentencing Aug. 21, U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan ordered after accepting Awan’s plea at the Tuesday hearing.
As part of the deal, prosecutors agreed to drop a bank fraud charge against Awan’s wife, Hina Alvi. Awan agreed to plead guilty to a felony related to an application for a home equity line of credit. He told a bank that the home was his wife’s primary residence; it was a rental property. The loan was fully re-paid.
Awan’s attorney called the case a “political prosecution” and a “tremendous waste of law enforcement time and resources” that failed to show a single breach of security or harm to the country.
“There has never been any missing server, smashed hard drives, blackmailed members of Congress, or breach of classified information,” lawyer Christopher Gowen said in a statement. “Yet Fox News and its media children continued to peddle a story in perfect coordination with House Republicans and the President,” Gowen said, up to Trump’s Tweet last month.
Awan and his associates were each assigned to work for individual lawmakers, but they shared job duties and log-in information for multiple servers, a practice that is prohibited under House rules. Gowen said that and other security concerns that led to the loss of Awan’s access to the House network illustrated a culture of “disorganization” in Congress rather than espionage.
In his first public statements since the investigation began, Awan told The Washington Post in an interview before Tuesday’s hearing that he questions whether the case would have been pursued if he did not have a Pakistani name. He said he came to the United States as a teenager, put himself through college, became a U.S. citizen, and built a career on Capitol Hill — what he portrayed as the fulfillment of a dream.
“This has cost me my reputation, my livelihood, my family,” he said. “I can’t believe this.”
He added, “The president used me to advance his political agenda.”

Tax cuts voor middenklasse zijn slechts tijdelijk, de permanente tax cuts voor de rijken en bedrijven gaan voor 90% naar opkopen aandelen en bonussen voor die rijken en de extreme drain op de inkomsten wordt bekostigd met leningen of knippen in het beetje welvaartstaat wat nog over is.quote:

Herbert, who is aiming to increase energy production in Utah, had been focused on the issue already and did convey the industry concerns to Pruitt in a letter last summer, his office confirmed.
The governor's letter of July 18, 2017, provided to POLITICO late Tuesday, nearly exactly matches the talking points and suggested regulatory text that the lobbyist gave Bishop and Jackson.
Himmelstein is a longtime Washington lobbyist and president of the energy lobbying firm National Environmental Strategies, which was previously caught in an ethics controversy over its ties to a former Interior Department official. He told Jackson he was working with QEP Resources Inc. and Newfield Exploration Co., two of the biggest drillers in the region that includes the companies’ leases in the Uintah and Ouray Indian reservations.
Himmelstein is also treasurer of the Conservative Leadership Alliance, a 501(c)(4) that spent $1.4 million on federal elections this year, according to OpenSecrets. And he is a lobbyist for FirstEnergy Solutions, which has been influential with the Trump administration in its bid to keep coal and nuclear plants online.
Pruitt’s critics have long complained the former Oklahoma attorney general was too closely tied to the oil and gas industry. Email records show senior staffers at EPA also exchange scores of messages with top lobbyists for the fossil fuel, agriculture and chemicals industries, and the newly released messages show the consideration top agency staffers gave to energy companies, who often complained that the Obama administration ignored their concerns.
Oil and gas development has been blamed for contributing to northeastern Utah’s ozone pollution, which can affect people suffering from bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. A 2013 study of the area found that at least 98 percent of volatile organic compounds and 61 percent of nitrogen oxides — building blocks of ozone — come from oil and gas.
Himmelstein and representatives for the two companies did not respond to requests for comment. But Jackson told POLITICO that EPA was eager to help them because the Obama-era requirements would have unfairly limited oil and gas production on the tribal lands compared with other nearby operations.
Jackson said the stricter permitting process for oil and gas companies in Utah would have been "entirely unnecessary and entirely unfair." EPA is likely to pursue a broader rewrite of the rule, in addition to the carve-out for the Uinta Basin, he added.
"Why are we disadvantaging Indian country?" he said, "That makes no sense."
But Jackson has it backward, said Jon Goldstein, director of regulatory and legislative affairs for the Environmental Defense Fund.
“What’s unfair is asking people to continue to breathe unhealthy air that has consequences,” Goldstein said.
While Himmelstein wanted EPA to remove the stipulation that drillers in any tribal areas that failed to meet ozone requirements must apply for source-by-source permits, EPA instead drafted an amendment specific to the Uinta basin.
The amendment would provide a “permanent mechanism for streamlining construction authorizations” on the reservation, including in areas not meeting ozone standards, EPA’s fact sheet explains. It notes that EPA is also working on a rule for the reservation to reduce ozone-forming emissions “while allowing continued development of its oil and natural gas resources.”
Himmelstein, who has long been acquainted with Jackson and met socially on several occasions with him last year, first emailed the EPA chief of staff and then-White House special assistant on energy Mike Catanzaro in June 2017 about setting up a meeting with the two companies.
“We need your help,” Himmelstein wrote. “The Uinta Basin in Northeast Utah (Rob Bishop’s district) is going to be listed as an ozone non-attainment area later this year. It is a prolific oil and gas producing area that encompasses state, tribal and federal lands.”
Pruitt had agreed to meet with QEP when he spoke at the American Exploration and Production Council in late May, Himmelstein reminded in another exchange.
Bishop’s spokesperson said the lawmaker’s phone call to Pruitt was part the Natural Resources Committee chairman’s efforts to press for changes in permitting and air quality rules in the Uinta Basin.
“This is an issue that dates back many years. The Chairman had numerous similar conversations with Pruitt’s predecessor, Gina McCarthy. The issue has not been resolved and Chairman Bishop continues to advocate for reasonable regulatory reforms that will protect and enhance the lives of the people of Utah’s first congressional district,” Bishop’s spokesperson said.

The article itself quoted, toward the end of the story, the network's own commentator, former Obama State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, saying, "This sounds like totally made up BS." The story said the Department of Homeland Security and State Department declined to comment, and that a representative for former Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson could not be reached.
Prior to the Fox News article, the claim had not received any noticeable attention from the US media.
But after Fox News published its story, other outlets, primarily in the conservative media space, published similar stories. Those outlets included The Daily Mail, The Gateway Pundit, and TownHall.
The claims were also shared on Twitter by Fox News host Sean Hannity and frequent Fox guests David Clarke and Charlie Kirk.
On Tuesday morning, just hours before Trump's tweet, the story made its way to Fox News' airwaves on "Fox & Friends First," the network's early morning show. It also later aired on "America's Newsroom," a late-morning news program on Fox News.
"It shouldn't be lost on anyone that this is a case of Donald Trump parroting Fox News, which is peddling the claims of an Iranian hardliner," Prescott told CNN.
Jake Sullivan, a former Obama official who was involved at the start of the Iran nuclear negotiations, also skewered Trump for relying on Fox News' thin report to make what he called a "completely false" claim.
"What is interesting about this is that what happened is a hardline crank in Iran just randomly made this comment, Fox News writes a story on it, and then Trump tweets it," Sullivan said on "The Situation Room."
"He had every opportunity to call people in his own Department of Homeland Security and State Department to ask whether or not this was true. And they would have told him it wasn't," Sullivan added. "Instead, he relies on Fox News. And the scary thing is that he's increasingly relying on sources like Fox News to get his intelligence rather than the professionals in his own government."
Neither a spokesperson for Fox News nor the White House responded to a request for comment Tuesday afternoon.
This would not be the first time Trump has tweeted false or questionable claims that have originated in right-wing media. The President has a long history of stoking conspiracy theories that target his political rivals.

De hamvraag voor mij is niet: "Is er bias?" Natuurlijk is er bias, dat is er overal. De hamvraag voor mij is: "Is er bias en heeft dat geleid tot acties die de grens overschreden van het betamelijke of leidde tot onprofessioneel gedrag in het onderzoek?"
In het geval van Strzok en Page is er geen bewijs voor dat ze dankzij hun bias onprofessioneel in dat onderzoek gehandeld hebben. Laten we er dus niet meer van maken dan waar bewijs voor is na een jaar lang onderzoek. Wat nog wel zou kunnen is dat er bewijs is voor onprofessioneel handelen van Strzok in het Rusland-onderzoek. Dat zullen we moeten afwachten. Hoe dan ook is deze verdenking volstrekt niet specifiek.
In het geval van het NY Field Office is er best een concrete verdenking van het onprofessioneel handelen van enkele agenten ten faveure van Trump / tegen Clinton, wat zelfs waarschijnlijk geleid heeft tot het winnen van de verkiezing door Trump. In opinion after opinion, he ruled in favor of corporations over average people and Big Money interests over the best interests of our democracy. Of the 35 justices who have served since World War II, Kennedy was the sixth most reliable pro-business vote. How’s that moderate?
With all the whitewashing of a staunchly conservative record that has been going on lately, it would be easy to forget that Kennedy cast the deciding vote in some of the most consequentially disastrous decisions of a generation. That’s right: This is the “moderate” who gifted a presidential election to George W. Bush on a silver platter in Bush v. Gore. In 2000, the popular vote did not count. It was Kennedy’s decisive vote from the bench that mattered.
This is the “moderate”’ who wrote for the majority in Citizens United v. FEC. He conflated money with speech and corporations with people. Wrong on both counts. That decision overturned a century of campaign finance law and opened the floodgates for unlimited special interest money, including from overseas, to flow unchecked into our elections. The results prove it. In 2016, 25 percent of the money spent on presidential and congressional races came from groups “with access to unlimited and unrestricted sources of funding.”
Kennedy is the “moderate”’ who last month handed powerful corporations yet another significant victory, in another 5-4 decision, in the case of Epic Systems Corp. v. Lewis. It made it more difficult for workers to seek recourse against employers engaged in wage theft and discriminatory pay practices.
Just last week, on his way out the door, Kennedy sided with another 5-4 majority to upend decades of precedent and progress for organized labor in Janus vs. AFSCME. It was a parting shot to workers before heading off to his own taxpayer-secured retirement.

Mitch McConnell robbed my old boss of his constitutional right to put forth his pick for the high court on the flimsiest possible grounds that it was an “election year.” In this election year, with Senator McConnell’s rank hypocrisy already exposed for the world to see, will the Senate confirm a judge even further to the right than Kennedy? If President Donald Trump has his way, the court will continue its rightward shift and leave the rest of us behind.

Such twice-a-year price increases of around 10 percent used to be commonplace in the US pharmaceutical industry. But notable, eye-popping hikes have made such bumps a flashpoint for consumers and lawmakers. For instance, public fury ignited at Martin Shkreli’s abrupt 5,000 percent price increase of an old, cheap anti-parasitic drug—one often given to babies and people with HIV/AIDS. And Mylan’s gradual 400 percent price increase for the live-saving EpiPen further enraged the public and Congressional committees.
In the aftermath, many—but not all—of Pfizer’s rivals pledged to raise prices just once a year and generally keep the hikes to under 10 percent. Moreover, President Donald Trump suggested on May 30 that the industry was poised to make “massive” voluntary price cuts in the coming weeks.
No such cuts have been announced, and Pfizer’s continued increases belie that notion. “The latest increases signal that it is ‘business as usual’ rather than the voluntary concessions that Trump indicated were coming,” Michael Rea, chief executive of Rx Savings Solutions, told the Financial Times.
In a statement, Pfizer addressed its price increases, saying:
"The list price remains unchanged for the majority of our medicines. We are modifying prices for about 10 percent of our medicines, including some instances where we're decreasing the price."
Pfizer lowered the price of five products, with dips ranging from 16 to 44 percent, the Times noted.

Kennedy at the end of this month will leave the Supreme Court without its swing vote on affirmative action while allowing President Trump to nominate a justice opposed to policies that for decades have tried to integrate elite educational institutions.
A highly anticipated case is pitting Harvard against Asian-American students who say one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions has systematically excluded some Asian-American applicants to maintain slots for students of other races. That case is clearly aimed at the Supreme Court.
“The whole issue of using race in education is being looked at with a new eye in light of the fact that it’s not just white students being discriminated against, but Asians and others as well,” said Roger Clegg, the president and general counsel of the conservative Center for Equal Opportunity. “As the demographics of the country change, it becomes more and more problematic.”
Democrats and civil rights organizations denounced the administration’s decisions. Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader, said the “rollback of vital affirmative action guidance offends our nation’s values” and called it “yet another clear Trump administration attack on communities of color.”
Guidance documents like those rescinded on Tuesday do not have the force of law, but they amount to the official view of the federal government. School officials who keep their race-conscious admissions policies intact would do so knowing that they could face a Justice Department investigation or lawsuit, or lose funding from the Education Department.
The Obama administration believed that students benefited from being surrounded by diverse classmates, so in 2011, the administration offered schools a potential road map to establishing affirmative action policies and race-based considerations that could withstand legal scrutiny from an increasingly skeptical Supreme Court.
In a pair of policy guidance documents issued in 2011, the Obama Education and Justice Departments informed elementary and secondary schools and college campuses of “the compelling interests” established by the Supreme Court to achieve diversity. They concluded that the court “has made clear such steps can include taking account of the race of individual students in a narrowly tailored manner.”
But Trump Justice Department officials identified those documents as particularly problematic and full of “hypotheticals” intended to allow schools to skirt the law.
The Trump administration’s decision returned the government’s policies to the George W. Bush era. The administration did not formally reissue the Bush-era guidance but in recent days did repost a Bush administration affirmative action policy document online. That document states, “The Department of Education strongly encourages the use of race-neutral methods for assigning students to elementary and secondary schools.” For several years, that document had been replaced by a note declaring that the policy had been withdrawn.
The Education Department had last reaffirmed its position on affirmative action in schools in 2016 after a Supreme Court ruling said schools could consider race as one factor among many. In that case, Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin, a white woman claimed she was denied admission because of her race.
“It remains an enduring challenge to our nation’s education system to reconcile the pursuit of diversity with the constitutional promise of equal treatment and dignity,” Justice Kennedy wrote for the 4-to-3 majority.
Some colleges, such as Duke and Bucknell universities, said they would wait to see how the Education Department proceeds in issuing new guidance. Other colleges said they would proceed with diversifying their campuses as the Supreme Court intended.
Melodie Jackson, a Harvard spokeswoman, said the university would “continue to vigorously defend its right, and that of all colleges and universities, to consider race as one factor among many in college admissions, which has been upheld by the Supreme Court for more than 40 years.”
A spokeswoman for the University of Michigan, which won a major Supreme Court case in 2003, suggested that the flagship university would like more freedom to consider race, not less. But it is already constrained by state law. After the case, Michigan voters enacted a constitutional ban on race-conscious college admissions policies.
“We believe the U.S. Supreme Court got it right in 2003 when it affirmed our law school’s approach at the time, which allowed consideration of race as one of many factors in the admissions process,” said Kim Broekhuizen, the Michigan spokeswoman. “We still believe that.”
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has indicated that he will take a tough line against such views. Federal prosecutors will investigate and sue universities over discriminatory admissions policies, he said.
But a senior Justice Department official denied that these decisions were rolling back protections for minorities. He said they were instead hewing the department closer to the letter of the law. In the departments’ letter, officials wrote that “the protections from discrimination on the basis of race remain in place.”
“The departments are firmly committed to vigorously enforcing these protections on behalf of all students,” the letter said.
Anurima Bhargava, who headed civil rights enforcement in schools for the Justice Department under President Barack Obama and helped write that administration’s guidance, said the withdrawal of the guidelines was timed for brief filings in the Harvard litigation, due at the end of the month.
“This is a wholly political attack,” Ms. Bhargava said. “And our schools are the place where our communities come together, so our schools have to continue to promote diversity and address segregation, as the U.S. Constitution demands.”
Catherine Lhamon, who served as the Education Department’s head of civil rights under Mr. Obama, called the departments’ move confusing.
“There’s no reason to rethink or reconsider this, as the Supreme Court is the highest court in the land and has spoken on this issue,” Ms. Lhamon said.
On Friday, the Education Department began laying the groundwork for the shift, when it restored on its civil rights website the Bush-era guidance. Conservative advocacy groups saw that as promising. Mr. Clegg, of the Center for Equal Opportunity, said that preserving the Obama-era guidance would be akin to “the F.B.I. issuing a document on how you can engage in racial profiling in a way where you won’t get caught.”
Ms. DeVos has seemed hesitant to wade in on the fate of affirmative action policies, which date back to a 57-year-old executive order by President John F. Kennedy, who recognized systemic and discriminatory disadvantages for women and minorities. The Education Department did not partake in the Justice Department’s formal interest in Harvard’s litigation.
“I think this has been a question before the courts and the courts have opined,” Ms. DeVos told The Associated Press.
But Ms. DeVos’s new head of civil rights, Kenneth L. Marcus, may disagree. A vocal opponent of affirmative action, Mr. Marcus was confirmed last month on a party-line Senate vote, and it was Mr. Marcus who signed Tuesday’s letter.
Under Mr. Marcus’s leadership, the Louis D. Brandeis Center, a human rights organization that champions Jewish causes, filed an amicus brief in 2012, the first time the Supreme Court heard Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. In the brief, the organization argued that “race conscious admission standards are unfair to individuals, and unhealthy for society at large.”
The organization argued that Asian-American students were particularly victimized by race “quotas” that were once used to exclude Jewish people.
As the implications for affirmative action for college admissions play out in court, it is unclear what the decision holds for elementary and secondary schools. New York City is embroiled in a debate about whether to change its entrance standard — currently a single test — for its most prestigious high schools to allow for more black and Latino students.

Trump floreert als het over zijn favoriete onderwerp gaat: Trump. Zodra iets ook maar enigszins betrekking heeft op beleid of iets raakt aan het dagelijks leven van mensen, zakt hij door het ijs. Dat zag je tijdens de debatten ook.
Iemand die m.i. bij een dergelijke boodschap past, is juist iemand die niet Trump probeert te overschreeuwen of zijn trucjes over te nemen. Het enige dat slechter is dan een waardeloze act is een kopie van een waardeloze act. De midterms moeten het nog bevestigen maar het lijkt er wel op dat er bovendien een enorm enthousiasme bij vrouwen zit. Dan kom ik uit op een type Amy Klobuchar. Als het een man zou moeten zijn zou Sherrod Brown ook kunnen. Allebei een tikkeltje saai, maar wel degelijk. Politiek moet weer normaal worden en om resultaten gaan draaien, daar snakt Amerika naar mijn idee naar. Type generic Democrat dus. Er is nu toch geen inspirator zoals Obama beschikbaar. Dan is er met een VP eventueel nog wel een diversiteitsmouw of een jong en hip persoon aan te passen.
Het enige is dat ik me afvraag of zo'n iemand met een naar links opschuivend en op revange belust primary publiek bij de Democraten door de voorverkiezingen komt.

Overigens had Clinton in 2016 een hoop ideeen, maar de nieuwszenders vonden het toffer om Trumps rallies integraal uit te zenden of het te hebben over 1 van zijn 10000 schandalen of Clintons emails; gecombineerd met idd campaigning tegen hem ipv voor haarzelf.

Een ander punt is de constante dreiging van impeachment van Trump door de Democraten. Sommige democraten overwegen om de aanwezigheid van Trump in het WH geen issue meer te maken. Het dilemma is dat wanneer Trump afgezet wordt, Pence er voor in de plaats komt, en die heeft dezelfde radicale plannen voor de VS in petto, dus kiezen ze er waarschijnlijk voor om de impact van Trump te beperken, en van hem een soort van schertsfiguur te maken die bevelen blaft en verder wordt genegeerd. The Jewish Federations of North America is looking at a new $75,000 tax bill this year because of the change.
“A lot of people are just finding out about it and the more people find out about it, the more pressure there will be on Treasury and Congress to either delay implementation or consider changing this,” said Steven Woolf, senior tax policy counsel for the group.
At least one Republican lawmaker is now proposing to rescind the tax, though House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady — one of the architects of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — is defending the provision.
It will simplify the code when it comes to how workers are compensated, Brady said through a spokesman.
The debate comes as Republicans celebrate the six-month milestone of the law’s enactment. They’ve emphasized the benefits of its big cuts in taxes on businesses and individuals.
But to help defray the budgetary cost of those changes, Republicans simultaneously pared tax breaks for workers’ fringe benefits, which is projected to raise around $40 billion over the next decade.
They were mainly trimming deductions companies have long taken for entertaining clients and providing meals for employees.
But Republicans also wanted to treat nonprofits equally, which proved challenging.
Because those organizations don’t pay income taxes, lawmakers couldn’t take away fringe-benefit deductions. So instead they created a 21 percent tax on the value of some of nonprofit employees’ benefits.
The main benefits affected are transportation-related, like free parking in a lot or a garage and subway and bus passes. It also targets meals provided to workers and, in some circumstances, may affect gym memberships.
“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act included provisions that provided grater parity in the tax treatment of different types of employee compensation,” said Rob Damschen, a Brady spokesman. “These provisions apply to both employers that are taxable entities and those that are tax-exempt entities.”
“Providing this greater parity helps to reduce the extent to which decisions about the elements included in the employee compensation package are driven by tax considerations,” he said in an email.
The proposal got virtually no attention when the legislation was making its way through Congress late last year, and many groups are outraged to now learn of the requirement.
“What we’re talking about is an income tax on the church for providing parking to its employees — that’s what we’re talking about,” said Mike Batts, chairman of the board of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, which is circulating the petition denouncing the tax. “It's absurd."
He scoffs at the idea of treating businesses and nonprofits equally.
“The whole idea of tax exemption for nonprofit organizations that are doing charitable, religious and educational work is for them not to be on the same playing field as for-profit businesses when it comes to taxes, in order to incentivize the good work they do to make our society better,” said Batts, who is also managing partner of an accounting firm that specializes in religious nonprofits.
He and others complain that, thanks to nonprofits’ tax-exempt status, many don’t have experts on staff who can help them understand the provisions. They also note that while companies also lost fringe-benefit breaks, they simultaneously got big cuts in their tax rates and new incentives for investments that more than made up for the lost deductions.
Many nonprofits say they are confused over how exactly the tax is supposed to work.
Churches and other groups want to know how they are supposed to go about calculating the value of things like parking spaces for employees. Some wonder if the garages provided as part of clergy residences are now taxable.
Other nonprofits have their own questions.
Universities want to know if the bus services they provide for faculty and students are taxable and how they figure out how much they owe. Orchestras want to know how to treat musicians who may perform in different locations.
“At what point is something a travel reimbursement? And at what point is it a commuter benefit?” said Heather Noonan, vice president for advocacy at the League of American Orchestras.
Treasury is now working on regulations spelling out the details of how the tax will work, though the groups are supposed to have already been paying the tax. It took effect Jan. 1 and nonprofits are supposed to pay it quarterly.
A host of groups, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Goodwill Industries, the YMCA and the National Council of Nonprofits are demanding the tax at least be delayed, saying it is unfair to ask them to be paying a levy they don’t understand.
Earlier this month, Rep. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) introduced legislation to kill the tax.

Het "buitenland" kan daarbij ook vrij makkelijk specifieke vergeldingsmaatregelen treffen om de midterms te beïnvloeden.
Daarnaast hebben die ook nog eens het voordeel dat ze geen handelsoorlog met elkaar hebben. Uitwijken naar een ander importland is daardoor ook een optie. Even industrie in eigen land op tuigen is een stuk lastiger.
En wat Mexico betreft is er ook nog een ander effect. Juist een flinke klap voor de Mexicaanse economie eventueel gepaard gaand met ongeregeldheden leidt weer tot meer (illegale) migratie naar de VS.

On Thursday afternoon, President Trump tweeted that he had accepted Mr. Pruitt’s resignation and that Mr. Wheeler would take over as acting director of the agency.
Mr. Wheeler is expected to serve in an acting capacity as head of the E.P.A. until President Trump nominates a new agency chief, who must then be confirmed by the Senate. That process could take months and potentially stretch past the November midterm elections.
It is possible that Mr. Trump could nominate Mr. Wheeler to the top job. However, several other names have also been mentioned as possible successors to Mr. Pruitt, including Donald Van der Vaart, a former senior environmental official in North Carolina. Mr. Pruitt selected him to serve on an E.P.A. scientific advisory board.
In a June interview with the Washington Examiner, Mr. Wheeler said he had no interest in taking over his boss’s job. “I could have put my hat in the ring for the administrator. I wasn’t interested in that. I am still not interested in that,” he said.SPOILERMr. Wheeler will now step in as the acting chief of an agency that has been central to President Trump’s signature campaign promise of stripping away regulations.
During Mr. Pruitt’s tenure, the former Oklahoma attorney general gained headlines for his aggressive push to roll back dozens of regulations governing clean air and water, and fighting against Obama-era rules focused on limiting carbon emissions. In recent months, however, Mr. Pruitt’s policy efforts were overshadowed by a running stream of alleged ethics violations.
Mr. Pruitt is the subject of at least 13 federal investigations, and a government watchdog agency earlier this year concluded that he had broken the law with his purchase of a $43,000 secure telephone booth for his office. He is also under investigation for his 2017 $50-a-night lease of a condominium from the wife of a powerful Washington lobbyist, and for accusations that he demoted or sidelined E.P.A. employees who questioned his actions.
The allegations and investigations came as Mr. Pruitt appeared to be using his job in the Trump administration to position himself for an eventual run at political office, perhaps as Senator or Governor in Oklahoma with an eventual eye on the presidency. At the same time, many of Mr. Pruitt’s policy initiatives have stumbled because of haste or imprecision. At least six have been struck down by the courts.
By contrast, Mr. Wheeler tends to eschew the limelight, his colleagues said. His career was built around quietly and incrementally advancing the interests of the fossil-fuel industry, chiefly by weakening or delaying federal regulations.
Mr. Wheeler has worked in Washington for more than 20 years. He is a former chief of staff to Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, the conservative Republican who has become known as Washington’s most prominent denialist of the established science of human-caused climate change. Mr. Wheeler also worked at the E.P.A. during the administration of the first President George Bush. More recently, he lobbied for the coal company Murray Energy, whose chief executive, Robert E. Murray, has been a supporter and adviser of Mr. Trump’s.
Environmentalists see in Mr. Wheeler a powerful ally of polluting industries and enemy of clean air and water. “Like Pruitt, this veteran coal lobby lobbyist has shown only disdain for the E.P.A.’s vital mission to protect Americans’ health and our environment,” said Ana Unruh Cohen, managing director for government affairs at the Natural Resources Defense Council, an advocacy group.
Mr. Wheeler has appeared to embrace criticism from the left that he is an ally of fossil fuels, according to email exchanges obtained by the Sierra Club under a Freedom of Information Act request. Last October, soon after Mr. Wheeler was nominated to his position as deputy director, he sent an email to Mr. Pruitt’s chief of staff, Ryan Jackson, a longtime friend, with a headline from The Onion, the satirical publication: “EPA Promotes Pulsating Black Sludge to Deputy Director.”
“Welcome, pulsating black sludge,” Mr. Jackson responded. “I guess I’m going to have to get the cleaning crews to come in more often.”
Washington insiders describe Mr. Wheeler as well positioned to pursue Mr. Trump’s agenda as effectively as Mr. Pruitt, or even more so, by moving more slowly but in ways likelier to withstand legal challenge. “Andrew is one of the most well-known, well-respected policy professionals in Washington on energy and environment — he knows everybody,” said Matthew Dempsey, a former colleague of Mr. Wheeler’s in Mr. Inhofe’s office, who currently works for a lobbying firm representing the oil and gas industry.
“He will be similar to Pruitt in terms of the agenda — he understands the Trump administration and will carry out the agenda,” said Mr. Dempsey. “But he’s been around Washington a long time. He knows how D.C. works and he does things by the book.”
The departure of Mr. Pruitt, a former protégé of Mr. Inhofe’s, and rise of Mr. Wheeler represents the powerful influence of Mr. Inhofe on the Trump administration’s environment policy. Mr. Inhofe had long championed Mr. Pruitt’s political career, and it was speculated that Mr. Pruitt would one day run for Mr. Inhofe’s Senate seat in Oklahoma.
Mr. Wheeler is one of a group of former Inhofe staff members, loosely known as the “Inhofe mafia,” who now work in energy and environment policy positions across the Trump administration and in top Washington lobbying firms.
Mr. Inhofe cheered Mr. Wheeler’s arrival at the E.P.A. earlier this year. “Andy Wheeler is the most competent and qualified person for the job he’s been asked to fulfill,” Mr. Inhofe said.
Mr. Wheeler’s rise also represents a victory of influence for another of his former bosses, the coal magnate and Trump adviser Robert Murray.
A few weeks after Mr. Trump’s inauguration, Mr. Murray, who contributed $300,000 to Mr. Trump’s inauguration fund, presented the president with a wish list of regulations that he wanted to see lifted from the coal industry. In particular, Mr. Murray has pushed Mr. Trump to undo President Barack Obama’s regulations designed to curb planet-warming pollution from coal-fired power plants, a leading cause of global warming. Mr. Trump then assigned Mr. Pruitt to roll back those rules.
Like Mr. Trump, Mr. Inhofe and Mr. Pruitt, Mr. Wheeler has questioned the established science of human-caused climate change. In 2010, Mr. Wheeler criticized the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s leading scientific authority on global warming, writing in a blog post that it has “has functioned more as a political body than a scientific body.”
However, some Democrats have offered at least modest praise of Mr. Wheeler — as he himself noted in another email exchange with Mr. Jackson.
After his November confirmation hearing, Mr. Wheeler emailed Mr. Jackson. “Everyone seemed to think I did a really good job, including Inhofe, Capito and Mr. Murray. Carper and Cardin both said really nice things about me,” he wrote.
He was apparently, referring to Democratic Senators Thomas Carper of Delaware and Ben Cardin of Maryland, both of whom are advocates of strong environmental regulations, and Senator Shelley Moore Capito, the Republican from West Virginia, who is one of Washington’s strongest advocates for the coal industry.
In a statement at Mr. Wheeler’s confirmation hearing, Mr. Carper said, “As a longtime staffer for the senior senator from Oklahoma, Mr. Wheeler was someone with whom we didn’t always agree on each and every policy, but he did prove to be one with whom we were able to work together on policies that we did agree on.” However, Mr. Carper did eventually vote against Mr. Wheeler’s confirmation to his position as deputy.
While it is likely that Mr. Wheeler, as the acting E.P.A. chief, will be effective in implementing Mr. Trump’s deregulatory agenda, one potential obstacle to his being nominated by the president to fill the job permanently is his record of opposing Mr. Trump during the presidential campaign. In a Facebook post on February 29, 2016, Mr. Wheeler penned a strong critique of Mr. Trump that has since been deleted.
“If you are considering voting for Donald Trump please think about the following: 1) no one really knows what his political beliefs are, he has donated to both parties over the years and to people with completely different views. 2) he has demonstrated through the debates and interviews that he doesn’t understand how government works,” he wrote. Mr. Wheeler’s post also suggested that, as a businessman, Mr. Trump “really hasn’t been that successful.”
Neither Mr. Wheeler nor two White House spokesmen responded to requests for comment about the Facebook post.

En soms heeft het gewoon ook geen nut om ergens over te discussieren als je het al niet eens kunt worden over wat wel/ niet betrouwbare bronnen zijn. Of met iemand die beweert dat nieuwsberichten waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van anonieme bronnen geen waarde hebben vanwege het autoriteitsargument.
Dit topic zie ik vooral als gelegenheid om de actuele ontwikkelingen te volgen en daar op in te gaan en niet om discussies te houden over één onderwerp dat veel informatie vereist en pagina's door kunnen gaan. Prima hoor, maar open op zo'n moment een apart topic daarover. Het gekke is dat zodra dat gebeurt, zoals bv gebeurd is met de betrouwbaarheid van media en de waarde van Trump's buitenlandbeleid, dezelfde mensen hun belangstelling verliezen.

This is misleading.
United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have arrested hundreds of MS-13 members in recent months, but the president did not present evidence to show that any particular towns had been ruled by or liberated from the gang.
MS-13, or Mara Salvatrucha, was founded in Los Angeles by Salvadoran refugees fleeing a civil war in the 1980s. It is believed to have more than 10,000 members in the United States, according to the Justice Department — similar to an estimate the F.B.I. made more than a decade ago.
President Trump has used MS-13 to justify hard-line immigration policies.
But the gang he’s trying to root out was born in the United States.
It was unclear which towns Mr. Trump was referring to, and neither the White House nor ICE immediately responded to requests for clarification on Saturday. MS-13 members in the United States are mostly concentrated in or around Los Angeles, Washington and Long Island in New York.
ICE provided data to The New York Times showing that 796 members of MS-13 were arrested in the fiscal year that ended in September, and 405 were arrested in the first quarter of the current fiscal year.
Members of the gang have committed brutal rapes and grisly murders, mostly targeting members of immigrant communities. The Justice Department has made fighting MS-13 a top priority under Mr. Trump, and the White House website refers to gang members as “animals.”
Critics of the administration’s immigration policies say the president uses MS-13 to stoke unfounded fears about immigrants.
Mr. Trump’s defense of ICE was posted after some critics of the administration said the agency should be shut down.
“The Democrats are making a strong push to abolish ICE, one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups of men and women that I have ever seen,” he wrote.
Abolishing ICE has not been embraced as part of the Democratic Party platform. But calls to shut down the agency are coming from progressive Democratic House candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York, Deb Haaland in New Mexico and Matt Haggman in Florida.
In another tweet, Mr. Trump said: “To the great and brave men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit. You are doing a fantastic job of keeping us safe by eradicating the worst criminal elements.”
The tweets were posted on Saturday morning, just as thousands of people across the United States gathered to march in protest over immigration policies that have led to the separation of more than 2,000 children from their parents.
Mr. Trump signed an order meant to end the separations last week, and a federal judge ordered on Tuesday that all separated families should be reunited within 30 days.
The Trump administration has often pointed to a “crisis of illegal immigration” at the United States border. But government data show that monthly crossings along the border with Mexico are much lower than they were years ago, even though there has been a significant increase in border crossings in the past few months when compared with the same period last year.
He asserted that Representative Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, “wants to protect” MS-13 — something she has not said. And he has said that the number of MS-13 members who have been deported is in the “thousands,” which is not possible.

Spokespeople for online reputation management companies in the two countries confirmed that they had been paid to write articles attempting to whitewash Trump’s ties to Felix Sater, a Russian-born businessman who, with former Russian trade minister Tevfik Arif, collaborated with the Trump Organization on numerous real estate deals from New York to the former Soviet Union.
The campaign appears designed to influence Google search results pertaining to Trump’s relationship with Sater, Arif, and the Bayrock Group, a New York real estate firm that collaborated with Trump on a series of real estate deals, and recruited Russian investors for potential Trump deals in Moscow.SPOILERSater—who once had an office at New York’s Trump Tower, Trump Organization business cards, and claims to have worked as a senior adviser to Trump—has recently emerged as a key figure in the federal investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
In the lead-up to the election, Sater worked extensively with Trump attorney Michael Cohen in a failed effort to build a Trump Tower in Moscow with the aid of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which Sater said would help Trump win the presidency. According to statements made by Cohen last year, Trump personally signed-off on the project.
Sater and Cohen also collaborated on a proposal early in the Trump administration to resolve the years-long conflict in Ukraine’s Crimea region, and to lift sanctions imposed against Russia for their military intervention in and annexation of the region. According to a recent BBC report, Sater even helped Cohen facilitate a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko, for which Cohen was secretly paid $400,000. Sater and Cohen both denied that report.
Sater’s relationship with Trump and his family goes back much further. The Russian emigre has explored real estate deals in Moscow since the late '80s. When the Trump Organization took interest, Sater was directly involved in their business efforts in the country, even accompanying Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. on a 2006 visit to Moscow at the request of the elder Trump. The elder Trump now says he doesn’t even remember Sater.
In 2010, a one-time executive at Bayrock brought a lawsuit against the firm. “For most of its existence, [Bayrock] was substantially and covertly mob-owned and operated," the suit alleged. Bayrock and Sater denied the allegations, and the lawsuit—which at one point listed Trump and Ivanka as co-defendants—was settled in February.
In the meantime, an attorney for the plaintiff in that suit had brought another lawsuit alleging tax fraud by Bayrock. That second suit, which was based on evidence suppressed by the judge during the first, was dismissed last year.
That’s when someone began paying for blog posts about the case.
The Daily Beast previously reported that a Pakistani blogger had been paid to write an article for the Huffington Post’s now-defunct contributor platform hailing the dismissal of the tax fraud case. That blogger, who went by the handle Waqas KH, said his client, whom he declined to name, had provided the text of the piece in full.
HuffPost is a prominent U.S. news source, but on more obscure platforms, used explicitly for search-engine optimization, over 50 other stories have popped up hyping the lawsuit’s dismissal and attempting to insulate Trump from controversy involving Sater and Bayrock. The articles were published over an eight-month period, from September 2017 through June 2018.
“Certainly now that Trump is President of the United States, there is not likely to be any further implications for him in this case,” declared a November article at a since-deleted website billing itself as a forum for a “business development specialist.” The article was written by Abhishek Chatterjee, who owns an Indian SEO business that offers to place articles on a network of 900 websites for $20 apiece.
Chatterjee said he’d received an order to publish the article “via a random email,” and that he doesn't know who placed the order. “We get orders from various clients small companies or big companies across the world,” Chatterjee wrote in an email. “Most of the times we don’t even know why [we are] writing about [our clients] or who asked us to do that.”
A day before Chatterjee’s article posted, another piece popped up on a similarly suspicious website hailing the dismissal of tax fraud charges against Sater, whom it dubbed a “former Trump crony.” That piece was authored by Mahruz Aly, an Indonesian SEO marketer who charges up to $225 to publish stories on a network of more than 2,000 websites.
Aly declined to say who paid him for the Sater piece. Instead, he pitched his business: “If you have article for publishing, I can publish it. But for paid sir.”
GodsSEO, an Indonesian-based company that charges up to $600 to place dummy articles for SEO purposes, was even less informative in its response. “Wazup, kid?” said a contact for the company, who responded to inquiries from the email address donaldtrump@godsseo.com.
Another Indonesian SEO vendor, Ongky Firmansyah, said in an email that he had been paid to randomly insert the names “Tevfik Arif” and “Tevfik Arif Doyen” into articles on his website.
Sater denied any knowledge of the paid SEO campaigns. Arif did not return attempts for comment.
The use of “private blog networks” (PBNs), or dummy websites set up to game search engine results, is a common, if often frowned-upon, internet marketing tactic, according to Brendon McAlpine, a business development manager for Australian online reputation management service Internet Removals.
McAlpine said link schemes like PBNs are frequently used to spread disinformation. “The problem with PBNs is that...anyone can create a website, build content and authority, then take paid promotional content without vetting the accuracy of it,” he explained. “We frequently see PBNs used for the destruction of businesses, individuals, government and celebrity reputations. PBNs are like the economy of influencers, where you can find a blog relevant to your target’s industry/interests and spread damaging content or counter intelligence for a small fee.”
Google’s Webmaster Guidelines explicitly prohibit of use of “large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns” like the one used to publicize Sater. To prevent the use of PBNs and to protect the integrity of its search results, Google has even developed an algorithm to automatically detect and penalize attempts to fraudulently manipulate its search ranking system.
The tactics aren’t limited to websites either. A host of dummy social media accounts—including Twitter and Facebook pages bearing the names Tevfik Arif, Tevfik Arif Doyen, TevfikArif Bayrock, and Тевфик Ариф (Serbian for Tevfik Arif)—have been used since last year to plug the dismissal of the lawsuit against Sater and Bayrock.
“Another victory for our great president Trump reputation,” declared one such account in December. “Fake news loses again.”

The wrestler, Shawn Dailey, said he was groped half a dozen times by Dr. Richard Strauss in the mid-1990s, when Jordan was the assistant wrestling coach. Dailey said he was too embarrassed to report the abuse directly to Jordan at the time, but he said Jordan took part in conversations where Strauss' abuse of many other team members came up.
"I participated with Jimmy and the other wrestlers in locker-room talk about Strauss. We all did," Dailey, 43, told NBC News, referring to Jordan. "It was very common knowledge in the locker room that if you went to Dr. Strauss for anything, you would have to pull your pants down.”
Dailey spoke out two days after NBC News reported that three former wrestlers who were coached by Jordan more than two decades ago accused the GOP congressman of turning a blind eye to Strauss' alleged abuse and then lying about it. Jordan denied knowing anything about the abuse and continues to do so.

In interviews with federal employees, immigration lawyers and shelter operators, those closest to the process raised questions about the initial assertions that federal authorities could account for the locations of both parents and children after they were separated.
In fact, the Health and Human Services agency charged with overseeing the care of migrant children, the Office of Refugee Resettlement, established such procedures, which included identification bracelets, the issuance of registration numbers and careful logs to keep the records of parents and children linked.
But those precautions were undermined in some cases by the other federal agency that has initial custody of apprehended migrants in the first 72 hours after they cross the border — Customs and Border Protection. In hundreds of cases, Customs agents deleted the initial records in which parents and children were listed together as a family with a “family identification number,” according to two officials at the Department of Homeland Security, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the process.
As a result, the parents and children appeared in federal computers to have no connection to one another.
“That was the big problem. We weren’t able to see that information,” said one of the officials, who is directly involved in the reunification process.
Officials cautioned that this was not a deliberate attempt to obfuscate, but a belief that it made more sense to track cases separately once a group of migrants was no longer in custody as a family unit, these sources said.
Katie Waldman, a spokeswoman for DHS, disputed the description of events at the border and said that the agency had always provided clear information to HHS linking parents and children to one another.
“Not only is it categorically false that DHS destroyed records, but the opposite is true: DHS personnel has worked hand-in-hand with HHS personnel to share clear data in the most useful formats possible for HHS – which included names, dates of apprehension, and identifying alien numbers for both children and parents who were separated as a result of zero-tolerance,” she said in a statement.
Over the past week, the Health and Human Services Department has been forced to undertake a herculean effort, deploying hundreds of federal workers, to comply with an injunction of a federal judge in San Diego, who ordered that all families separated under the policy must be reunited by July 26. The deadline for children under the age of 5 was set for Tuesday.
“I think it’s mission impossible,” said José Xavier Orochena, a lawyer in New York representing about a dozen parents whose children were taken from them. Mr. Orochena said that he met this week with the president of a shelter in New York where some of the children are being held. Neither one of them could imagine how the vetting that is required to bring families back together could be completed by the court’s deadline.
“Unless they waive all these requirements,” Mr. Orochena said.
Alex Azar, the secretary of Health and Human Services, said on Thursday that the agency was dealing with nearly 3,000 children separated from families, about 100 of them under the age of 5, but would make the reunifications happen in time.
“HHS is executing on our mission even with the constraints handed down by the courts,” he said, calling the judge’s time limits “extreme.”
He echoed President Trump, who has repeatedly placed blame for the separations outside the executive branch — pointing to policies and court decisions from earlier years that prevent migrant families from being held in detention for extended periods of time.
“Any confusion is due to a broken immigration system and court orders. It’s not here,” Mr. Azar said.
The problem that arose with the missing family identification numbers became apparent as soon as children were shipped away to shelters, agency employees said. Many were dropped off thousands of miles away from their parents and some were too young or scared to speak.
That left hundreds of federal employees, including Mr. Azar himself, to manually review the documents of each individual child over the weekend to look for any references to separation, including anything the child may have told agency employees or shelter workers.
But young children are often unreliable narrators, Mr. Azar said on Thursday, and there has been some confusion. For example, he said, some children might have told shelter workers they had traveled with a parent at some point, but they may not have actually crossed the border together. In those cases, while parent and child may indeed be in separate custody, they are not part of the group forcibly separated by immigration authorities, and thus are not subject to the court-ordered deadline for reunification.
The secretary added that steps could not be skipped in order to meet the court’s deadline, pointing to some parents who had already been weeded out of eligibility for sponsorship of children in the vetting process, which turned up histories of child cruelty and rape, he said.
The announcement Thursday that DNA testing would be used to help confirm family units drew some opposition from immigrant advocates, who said that the records could be used to track undocumented immigrants indefinitely.
Administration officials previously had said about 2,300 children had been separated from their parents. But over the weekend, the agency came up with its final accounting that showed nearly 3,000 in total.
Many questions remained unanswered Thursday about how the process of reunifications would unfold.
The rough plan is for a patchwork series of moves of both parents and children, according to the two immigration officials who described the process. Some of the parents under the plan are to be consolidated in those immigration jails that have extra room and children would be routed to meet them. Other parents, such as those of children who are under 5, have already been moved to the immigration jails nearest to the shelters where their children are being held.
But no pathway was in place as of Thursday for what will happen after the reunifications, for families released from immigration custody on bond or other conditions. Some parents and children will presumably have been moved several states away from their extended families or support networks, the officials said. They may not have the money for transportation back to their families, or even food.
But Mr. Azar insisted Thursday that his agency would meet the court’s deadline. A follow up to the email asking for volunteers to help with the reunification effort began, “Wow!”
Thanks to their efforts, “the mission will be accomplished,” it said. “And everyone should feel satisfied that we are doing our part to reunify the children with their families.”
