A Hawaiian volcano could be set to erupt after hundreds of earthquakes and the collapse of a crater floor.

Lava may burst through the ground east of Kilauea, the most active of the five volcanoes that form the state’s main island, geologists have warned.

Authorities urged the public to be on alert after scientists noted underground magma flowing beneath a main road near houses in the district of Puna.

More than 250 earthquakes have been detected since a crater floor collapsed at the Pu’u O’o vent in the shield volcano’s eastern rift zone earlier this week.

Most were minor but many were felt by locals, including one with a magnitude of 4.2, which shook the coast on Tuesday morning.

Scientists from the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) warned the seismic activity could lead to a lava breakout, although they could not say where or when.

“Magma has now migrated into a lower part of the east rift zone,” she said, adding there was concern that it was in a rift near Highway 130, a major road on the island.

There are homes in that area of Hawaii's Big Island and the road also leads to a popular access point where people can hike or bike into the lava viewing area.

The Hawaii County Civil Defence Agency issued an alert warning people in the area to monitor the situation and be prepared for the possibility of a new lava flow.

Spokeswoman Kanani Aton said the agency was “planning ahead for a worst-case scenario” by reviewing emergency plans and monitoring the activity.

Ms Babb said the activity has slowed significantly since a spike earlier this week but the threat level has not changed.

However, scientists are not sure if decreased seismic activity is an indication that the event is over or if it has just stalled before picking back up.

“That’s the unknown at this point," Ms Babb said. "Therefore we are still watching, we are watching very closely."

Geologists flew over the area in a helicopter and observed a layer of red ash covering the ground near the Pu’u O’o vent. The ash was spread throughout the area when the crater floor collapsed.

“The good news is that as they flew down the east rift zone they didn’t see any ground cracks or steaming that would suggest that the magma was coming near the surface,” Ms Babb said.

Most of Kilauea’s activity has been not been explosive, but an eruption in 1924 spewed ash and 10-tonne rocks into the sky, killing one man.

In 1983 an eruption of Pu’u Oo resulted in lava fountains soaring over 1,500 feet high. In the decades since, the lava flow has buried dozens of square miles of land and destroyed many homes.

Lower Puna officials in Hawaii are preparing for a possible eruption amid continuous earthquakes along the East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano. The preparations include the identification of shelters, mobilization of police and other security personnel to ensure residents’ safety, and road crews to ensure access to evacuation routes.

"Should an eruption occur, residents along the East Rift Zone may have little warning and should be prepared to evacuate," said Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno, adding that the County will keep the community informed about the situation.

"All agencies have been alerted about the possibility of an eruption," Magno said. "The risk areas and possible hazards are being identified, and shelters have been identified."

Recent observations
Elevated rates of seismicity and deformation at Kīlauea Volcano along a section of the lower East Rift Zone east of the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō vent continue, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported 05:23 UTC on Thursday, May 3, 2018.

This activity is associated with the continued intrusion of magma into the East Rift Zone to locations east of Highway 130 and an outbreak of lava from the lower East Rift Zone remains a possible outcome of the continued unrest, HVO warns. At this time it is not possible to say with certainty if or where such an outbreak may occur, but the area downrift (east) of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō remains the most likely location.

A GPS station located about 1.5 km (1 mile) southwest of Nanawale Estates began moving toward the north on Wednesday morning local time, indicating the magma intrusion is approaching this area of the East Rift Zone. The station has already moved several centimeters.

A tiltmeter at Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō recorded steady, deflationary tilt during the day, with several sharp inflation offsets. These offsets probably recorded the continued episodic collapse of the crater floor. Some of these offsets corresponded to short-lived ashy plumes rising from the crater.

Tiltmeters at the summit began recording an increased deflationary tilt this afternoon. The summit lava lake level has lowered about 20 m (65 feet) since the deflationary tilt began in the early morning on May 1.

New small ground cracks less than a few cm (inches) wide developed yesterday across a couple of roads in and adjacent to Leilani Estates. These cracks reflect the buildup of stress at the surface due to the magma intrusion. No steam or gases were observed escaping from the cracks.

Analysis of webcam images of the 61g lava flow field on May 1 indicates that surface flows within a few kilometers of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō have stopped advancing - the few areas of incandescence visible in the images did not move starting early morning on May 1. The 61g flow is likely no longer being supplied with lava from Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō.

Vulkaanuitbarsting Hawaii: gebied ge�vacueerd
Het gaat om huizen in de wijk Leilani Estates ten oosten van de berg op het grootste eiland van de archipel. Ook zijn tien scheuren ontstaan in het aardoppervlak waardoor lava ontsnapt.

Volgens het Amerikaanse seismologische dienst USGS begon de uitbarsting van Kilauea op 30 april. De uitbarsting ging gepaard met verschillende aardbevingen die beperkte schade veroorzaakten aan wegen op het eiland en voor korte stroomstoringen zorgden.

Schildvulkaan
De Amerikaanse staat Hawaii telt meerdere vulkanen en Kilauea is een van de meest actieve vulkanen ter wereld. Het gaat om een zogenoemde schildvulkaan. Als die uitbarst kan het lava niet alleen uit de krater stromen maar ook door ondergrondse scheuren op andere plaatsen aan de oppervlakte komen.

Lavameer
Wat de uitbarstingen van vulkaan Kilauea (Ha�tiaans voor uitspuwen) zo bijzonder maakt, is dat de lava omhoog komt in een gebied veertig kilometer weg van de top van de vulkaan. "De vulkaan heeft behalve een krater ook twee ondergrondse armen. De magmastromen kunnen zich dus ondergronds bewegen", zegt De Zeeuw - van Dalfsen.

"In de vulkaan was een lavameer, opeengehoopt in de vulkaankrater, bijna tot aan de oppervlakte. Dus dat kon je goed zien. Dat lavameer is 290 meter gedaald. Al die lava is ondergronds verdwenen richting het oosten. En dat komt naar boven op een zwakke plek. De vraag was alleen waar."

Volgens de vulkanoloog weten mensen die er wonen wat er kan gebeuren. "Ze weten natuurlijk dat ze op een vulkaan wonen. Letterlijk. En dat wordt al op school uitgelegd. Ook alle maatregelen. Men weet het gewoon en accepteert de uitbarstingen. Maar niemand kijkt graag toe hoe zijn huis afbrandt."

Uit de vulkaan komt behalve lava ook het giftige gas zwaveldioxide, dat een sterke geur van rotte eieren verspreidt. Inwoners zijn ook daarvoor gewaarschuwd. Het is vooral schadelijk voor ouderen, kinderen en mensen met ademhalingsproblemen. Sinds de eerste uitbarstingen ruim een week geleden zijn al 36 huizen en gebouwen vernield en hebben tweeduizend mensen hun huizen verlaten.

Godin Pele
Half april ontdekten vulkanologen dat er steeds nieuwe scheuren in de berg ontstaan, waardoor er uit verschillende kraters lava stroomt die soms negentig meter de lucht in spuit. Geologen rapporteren harde knallen en dreunende geluiden. Ook zijn er regelmatig aardbevingen. "Er ontstaat een klein scheurtje en dat scheurtje breidt zich uit tot een grotere spleet en daar komt de lava door naar boven", zegt De Zeeuw - van Dalfsen.

De Kilauea is over het algemeen niet erg actief, maar spuwt al sinds 1983 lava. Deskundigen vergelijken de huidige situatie met 1955, toen de vulkaan 88 dagen lang lava spuwde en 400 hectare grond met lava bedekte. Volgens een oud volksgeloof zou de godin Pele in de berg wonen.

"Een deel van de bevolking gelooft in Pele - de godin van het vuur - en brengen ook offers om Pele te vragen de uitbarsting te stoppen en hun huis te sparen. Offers als theebladeren, die steken ze in de grond. Er worden geen kinderen geofferd hoor."

Hawaii's Civil Defense Agency announced the latest crack in the ground Sunday evening. It is the 18th fissure to open on the island in the days since the Kilauea volcano erupted on May 3.
Fissure 18 emerged near Halekamahina Loop Road -- where fissure 17 erupted early Sunday, splattering lava tens of feet into the air.

Fissure 17 is several hundred yards long.
Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the volcano erupted, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant.

The volcanic vents, or fissures, have gobbled up dozens of homes and vehicles, with 37 structure so far destroyed.

The Hawaii Civil Defense Agency said in a Sunday message that vacation rentals in Lower Puna were directed to cease operations to relieve the demand for water as well as reduce the area population so emergency responders can focus on residents.

The Hawaii Police Department also enforced the Federal Aviation Administration's temporary flight restriction for Lower Puna. No helicopter or drone activity is allowed without approval.
Another fissure, the 16th, was reported earlier Saturday and "produced a lava flow that traveled about 250 yards before stalling," officials said.

That vent was about a mile east of the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, where officials removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquids due to safety concerns.

In addition to the new fissures, USGS officials said an explosive eruption is possible at Halemaumau crater at the top of the Kilauea volcano. Such an eruption could generate ash plumes over an area 12 miles from the summit crater, the HOV said.

No other significant changes have occurred: earthquakes continue and the summit continues to deflate, increasing the risk of explosive eruptions if ground water enters into the drained conduit of where Halema'uma's lava lake used to be.

ava continues to be erupted from the latest fissures that opened up during the past 48 hours, labeled #17 and #18, and there are signs that the eruption is still developing and might continue (and potentially increase) for a while.

HVO confirms fissure 20 opened

Excessive exposure to ash can make driving difficult and can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, so officials have also urged residents to minimize their exposure to it.

This new burst of ash comes hours after the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said a new fissure has opened up on the Big Island, bringing the total number of lava- and gas-spewing cracks to 20 in the wake of the May 3 eruption.

Officials Monday warned of "hazardous emissions of sulfur dioxide" in the Lanipuna Gardens subdivision.

The air quality there has been evaluated as a "condition red," which means the air could pose an immediate danger, the Civil Defense Agency said in a post on Monday. The gases are especially dangerous for the elderly, children, babies and people with respiratory problems, officials said.

Geologists are warning a possible explosion at the summit of Kilauea could be the largest in nearly 100 years, hurling boulders the size of refrigerators. The heavy clouds of smoke coming from the main crater on Wednesday were likely triggered by a rock fall from the crater walls.

As the lava levels inside the volcano drain lower, the danger of an eruption can actually increase. When the molten rock reaches groundwater levels, pressurized steam can cause an explosion, shooting rocks and ash miles away from the crater.

Further down the volcano, the underground lava, oozing through cracks in the neighborhood of Leilani Estates is only about a half-mile away from a geothermal power plant. The plant has been shut down, and workers are trucking away 60,000 gallons of flammable liquids. Hawaii Gov. David Ige issued an emergency proclamation to secure the area.

"If you project the line where the fissures are occurring, the PGV facility is on that line, so we definitely want to be prepared," Ige said.

Volcanoes National Park will be closed Friday because of the threat. Scientists think conditions could be right for a major explosion within a few days. The last time that happened was in 1924 when it blasted rock and ash more than five miles into the air.

The U.S. Geological Survey has raised the alert for Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano from an orange to a red warning.

Ash eruption at the volcano’s summit increased in intensity Tuesday, with an ash cloud spewing as high as 12,000 feet above sea level, according to the USGS.

Ashfall and air pollution associated with a volcanic eruption have been reported as far as 18 miles downwind of Kilauea in Pahala.

A red warning means a “major volcanic eruption is imminent, underway or suspected with hazardous activity both on the ground and in the air,” the USGS said.

"At any time, activity may become more explosive, increasing the intensity of ash production and producing ballistic projectiles near the vent," the agency tweeted.

Ballistic blocks of up to up to 60 cm (2 feet) across "were found in the parking lot a few hundred yards from Halemaumau. These reflect the most energetic explosions yet observed and could reflect the onset of steam-driven explosive activity. Further observations are necessary to asses this interpretation. Additional such explosions are expected and could be more powerful."

points along the northeast end of the active fissure system. HVO/USGS reported that whilst fissures 6, 17 and 19 only showed intermittent spattering, fissure 20 was erupting a short line of low lava fountains feeding a channelized lava flow that reached the coast. By the evening of 21 May there was only a single lava ocean entry left. Over the course of Tuesday 22 May, most eruptive activity in the Lower East Rift Zone shifted to the middle portion of the system of fissures. Lava fountains were being ejected from fissures 6 through to fissure 22 and some weak spattering occurred from fissures 5, 6, 17 and 19. A new area of fountaining started in the afternoon along the fissure line between Kaupili and Mohala Streets near Fissure 23.

Magma is still being supplied to the lower East Rift Zone and elevated earthquake activity continues. However, earthquake locations have not moved farther down-rift in the past couple of days, and there were only a few earthquakes located today in the rift zone.

Explosions continue to occur from Haleama’uam’u crater in Kilauea’s summit caldera. HVO/USGS reported a first small explosion early Monday morning 21 May at 12:55, producing an ash plume that reached about 2135 m (7000 ft) and which was carried by the wind to the southwest. Several smaller explosions took place throughout Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 May, all ejecting ash to under 3050 m (10,000 ft) above sea level. Additional explosions are possible at any time. Seismic activity on Kilauea’s summit which had abruptly decreased after the recent explosive eruptions, is again slowly increasing.

The eruption continues at similar levels as during the past days, with conditions changing faster than it is possible to accurately update.

Multiple lava flows fed from multiple fissure vents continue to feed several lava flows. The main advance has been from the central-western part of the system towards the north-east, invading additional inhabited and forested areas. The number of destroyed houses has unfortunately been increasing with the hour almost. A tendency of activity moving uprift (NE) is visible overall.
The ocean entry (created by two flows) showed little to no activity yesterday morning, but probably is still active. HVO / USGS reported late last evening (Hawaiian time) that "Fissures 7 and 8 remain the most active eruptive centers of the system", while "Fissure 22 has waned, and Fissure 13 is the dominant source of lava entering the ocean, which is occurring at three minor entry points. Fountaining is occurring at Fissure 8. Fissure 7 activity increased overnight, with lava fountains reaching 150-200 feet high and producing a large spatter rampart over 100 feet tall."

At 19:00 Sunday evening (local time), the large perched lava pond created by lava from fissure #7 apparently breached, creating a fast moving lava flow that ran down Leilani Avenue and Luana Street in Leilani Estates, then continued to move NE, crossing Pohoiki road and invading the western part of the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), where at least one of the drill wells (previously sealed) was covered.

At least two new fissures (#24 and #25) have formed in the area of southern Nohea St in the western-central fissure system, feeding new lava flows that advance mostly to the N and NE, destroying additional portions of the central part of Leilani Estates

In the lower East Rift Zone (LERZ) fissure system, the area of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens was the scene vigorous eruption of lava also throughout Monday 28 May.

Early Monday morning it became clear that the fast-moving flow which broke out the evening before originated from fissure 8 which fed a channelized flow that first moved north along an older flow before turning east and quickly destroying a new residential area. Its initial advance rate of hundreds of meters (yards) per hour had however slowed down to a few meters (yards) an hour by Monday morning and eventually stalled during a short period of inactivity. Late in the afternoon of Monday 28 May, however, vigorous fountaining resumed at fissure 8, producing a fast-moving lava flow that travelled first north and then northeast at a speed of ca 18 meter (20 yards) an hour. Fissure 8’s vigorous fountaining has produced significant amounts of Pele’s hair which are transported downwind, with reports of some strands falling in Pahoa.

Several other fissures which were inactive on Monday morning 28 May reactived again later that day with spattering and lava fountains, the highest of which were observed at fissure 7/21. A resulting lava flow was moving south from fissures 16/18, but the amounts of lava they had erupted was not yet enough to reach the ocean so that only a minor ooze of residual lava was entering the ocean on Monday evening. Ash continued to erupt intermittently from the vent within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, at Kīlauea's summit throughout Monday 28 May. HVO/USGS reports that a brief emission event at about 4:35 AM local time sent ash to about 3050 meter (10,000 feet) above sea level, and a similar event around 6:30 AM sent ash to approximately 3660 meter (12,000 feet) above sea level. Observations from the ground, by UAS, and by satellite during the past week have documented retreat of the summit vent walls due to collapse of the steep conduit and rim.
Earthquakes are currently occurring at high rates in the summit area and a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred at 5:39 PM HST on the Koa'e fault zone south of the caldera. Seismicity continues in the summit region as the area subsides and adjusts to the withdrawal of magma.

Steam explosion spreads ash fallout at Kīlauea summit nearly 40 days after initial eruption

Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano has been erupting since May 3, and according to the county of Hawaii's civil defense agency, another small explosion occurred on Sunday morning.

The steam explosion spewed ash plumes over Ka'u, the southernmost district of the Big Island. The eruption happened 38 days after Kīlauea’s initial explosion which sent lava, ash and toxic gases throughout Hawaii’s largest island.

Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports that the eruption continues in the lower East Rift Zone. Fissure 8 continues to produce a large channelized flow that is entering the ocean at Kapoho Bay and producing a large laze plume.

A 5.3 magnitude volcanic eruption occurred early Monday morning about 3 miles west-southwest of the Kilauea Volcano, according to the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported no tsunami threat following the event.

The earthquake was associated with an ash explosion that happened around 04:43 a.m. local time from the Halema'uma'u crater, the USGS reported.

The USGS also stated that this event's plume was similar to past events that have sent ash clouds up to 10,000 feet in the air and drifted southwest, with possible ash fall at downwind locations.

According to the county of Hawaii civil defense agency, severe conditions may exist such as inability to breathe and choking. The agency said this is a serious situation that affects the entire exposed population.

“I’m talking about 600 families. Don’t forget the farmers, don’t forget the ranchers, don’t forget all the employees for them,” Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim said. Mayor Kim’s home was also destroyed by the volcano.

At least 700 homes have been destroyed by lava since he eruptions began, Kim told Hawaii News Now.

The lava that continues to spew from Kīlauea has reached a new high temperature of 2,140 degrees Fahrenheit.

"This is the hottest lava we've seen during this eruption," Wendy Stovall, a scientist with USGS, on Hawaii News Now said.

"Lava can't get hotter than where we are," Stovall said.

Kilauea’s eruption in the lower East Rift Zone continues without showing any signs of weakening. The current activity has been sustained for 38 days now, 2 days longer than the last fissure eruption that occurred in this area in 1960. However, compared to the rapid change of activity locations and advancing lava flow fronts, the eruption seems to have geographically settled for the past week.

Fissure 8 remains the centre of activity with a line of closely spaced vents that continue to erupt lava. The height of the produced lava fountains thereby fluctuates between 35 – 55 meter (115 - 180 feet), just above or below the rim of the large spatter cone (pu’u) that they build up along the downwind side of the vents. Lava fountaining from fissure 8 continues to feed a fast-moving channelized lava flow trending north and then east to the ocean entry at Kapoho Bay. Hawai’i Volcano Observatory scientists estimate the lava output to reach up to approximately 100 cubic meters per second!

The width of the active part of this long lava channel varies along its length, ranging from about 90 to 275 meter (100 to 300 yards) wide, splitting from 1 channel into a braided lava river that comes back together before turning eastward to Kapoho. Despite the fact that this channel is full of lava, only minor overflows of the channel levees occurred along the length of the lava flow which so far were short-lived and hence did not pose an immediate threat to areas not previously covered by lava.
Comparison of previous lava flow maps and thermal maps with the current ones show that the wide lava channel flowing over what used to be Kapoho concentrates into a narrow funnel from where there is now only 1 main ocean entry. The lava that has filled Kapoho Bay in the past week built a new lava delta which is now about 1 square kilometre (250 acres) in size.

The interaction of molten lava flowing into cool seawater causes pulsating "littoral explosions" that throw spatter (fragments of molten lava) and pieces of solidified glassy lava high into the air. HVO/USGS warns that these ocean entry littoral explosions can create hazardous conditions both on land and at sea, because the lava fragments can be thrown far inland, as well as seaward. Volcanic gas emissions from the fissure eruption remain very high, a recent measure indicated them to be nearly twice the value of the past two weeks.

The only other activity in the Lower East Rift Zone fissure system was glow, degassing and weak spattering noted for the last several days at Fissures 16 & 18. This activity is however not creating any lava flows.

This gradual build up continued on June 15, 2018, and resulted in over 180 seismic events between 6 am and noon, 8 of which were stronger than magnitude-3.0. Finally an explosive event occurred at 11:56 AM that produced an ash and gas plume to nearly 3050 m (10,000 ft). Seismicity dropped abruptly after the explosive event but then slowly started to build up again over the next hours. By the early morning of June 16, 2018, about 35 earthquakes were recorded each hour and this seismicity culminated at 10:22 AM in a subsurface explosion with energy equivalent to a magnitude-5.3 earthquake which produced a weak gas and ash emission plume that rose from Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Once the plume had cleared up, the Kilauea caldera webcam showed fresh collapse of Halemaʻumaʻu crater rim. Throughout the weekend, Kilauea’s lower East Rift Zone eruption persisted to vigorously effusive large amounts of lava from fissure 8 which travelled along the well established 13 km (8 mile) channel to the broad ocean entry at Kapoho

Fissure 8 continues to produce lava fountains with a pulsating height varying from 30 to 60 m (100 – 200 ft). This ongoing spattering of lava has built up an impressive cinder cone that partially encircles the fissure 8 vent and is now 51 m (170 ft) at its highest point. Lower fountains are thereby hidden from view within this cinder cone, but taller fountains are still adding fragments of lava (spatter) that continue to build the cone higher.

From the fissure 8 vent, lava flows freely over small cascades (rapids) into a well-established perched channel that travels for about 13 km (8 mi) to the ocean entry at Kapoho. Near the vent, lava is traveling about 24 km per hour (15 mi per hour) but it slows down to about 2 km per hour (1.5 mi per hour) near the ocean entry at Kapoho. Occasionally, minor amounts of lava briefly spill over the channel levees but overall the flow field seems stable with little change to its size and shape for the past few days.

There has only been a small amount of expansion of lava onto new areas at the southern boundary of the flow near the coast and south of Vacationland. As of 15 June, the total lava flow area of this eruption is 23,9 square km (9,2 square miles) and the new lava delta constructed in the ocean covers 1,3 square km (320 acres).

Apart from the vigorous lava fountaining at fissure 8, there is still lava oozing from fissures 16 and 18 which create small lava flows, some mild spattering intermittenly observed from fissures 6 and 15 and increased steaming from fissure 9.

Magma continues to be supplied to the Lower East Rift Zone but seismicity remains relatively low in the area with numerous small magnitude earthquakes and low amplitude background tremor. Higher amplitude tremor is occasionally being recorded on seismic stations close to the ocean entry. (HVO/USGS)

A tiny 'island of lava' forms near Hawaii's Kilauea volcano

A small "island of lava" has popped up near Kilauea in Hawaii, as U.S. authorities continue to monitor activity at the volcano.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a field crew noticed lava oozing from this island was similar to lava near Hawaii's coastline.

The island is estimated to sit a few meters offshores, and is as wide as 30 feet in diameter.

USGS believes the island most likely formed from lava flow at fissure eight — one of 24 fissures spotted at the volcano. It might have also formed as a submarine tumulus, created when the upward pressure of slow-moving molten lava swells or pushes the overlying crust upward.

Lava from Kilauea has been spewing for more than a month, forcing evacuations. Last month, USGS said the lava was transforming into a fast-flowing river capable of covering roughly 200 yards per hour.

“If the ongoing eruption maintains its current style of activity at a high eruption rate, then it may take months to a year or two to wind down,” said the report designed to help authorities on the Big Island deal with potential risks from the volcano.

Lava is bursting from same area about 25 miles (40 km) down Kilauea’s eastern side as it did in eruptions of 1840, 1955 and 1960, the report said. The longest of those eruptions was in 1955. It lasted 88 days, separated by pauses in activity.

The current eruption could become the longest in the volcano’s recorded history, it added.

Geologists believe previous eruptions may have stopped as underground lava pressure dropped due to multiple fissures opening up in this Lower East Rift Zone, the report said.

The current eruption has coalesced around a single fissure, allowing lava pressure to remain high.

A 1,300-foot-wide (400-meter) lava river now flows to the ocean from this “source cone” through an elevated channel about 52 to 72 feet (16 to 22 meters) above ground.

“The main hazard from the source cone and the channel system is a failure of the cone or channel walls, or blockage of the channel where it divides in narrower braids. Either could divert most, if not all, of the lava to a new course depending on where the breach occurs,” the report said.

The report said it only considered risks from a change in lava flow direction to communities to the north of the channel as residents there have not been evacuated, whereas residents to the south have already left their homes.

After more than three months, the volcanic eruption on Hawaii's Big Island appears to be slowing.

Geologists at the Hawaiian Volcanic Observatory say the flow of lava from a crack in the earth at the foot of the Kilauea volcano has greatly diminished in recent days. It was lava from that vent, Fissure 8, that ran toward the coast in a molten river, inundating two seaside communities and reshaping the island's southeast coast.

That doesn't mean the event is over. Tina Neal, the scientist in charge of the observatory, noted that eruptions like this typically wax and wane.

"It could be weeks or months before we feel comfortable calling the eruption and the summit collapse over," she said in a press release.

Still, any reprieve is welcome news to the residents of the Big Island's Puna District, who have been living in a state of uncertainty since the eruption began on May 3.

During the eruption, lava flows stopped and started from dozens of fissures, destroying homes and rendering roads impassable. Lava bombs rained on residents and injured nearly two dozen people on a tourist boat. Eruptions from Halemaumau crater, the volcano's summit, rattled the earth and forced the closure of much of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The park's closure and fear of the eruption sent ripples through the Big Island's tourism-dependent economy.

For much of the past two months, attention has focused on Fissure 8, which spewed and gushed lava while others quieted. Lava from the fissure formed a channel that carried it toward the island's southeast coast, where it has been entering the ocean, sending spectacular plumes of steam and laze — a mix of hydrochloric acid and steam with fine glass particles — into the air.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says that activity and lava output from Fissure 8 lessened in recent days and remains low.

The slowdown couldn't have come at a better time. State officials and residents are now preparing for the effects of Hurricane Hector, which is expected to pass south of the Big Island on Wednesday. The storm has weakened but is still forecast to potentially bring big swell, high winds and rain.

The USGS has recently put out their daily report monitoring the volcano, and have noted smoke emerging from one of the previously active fissures.

Fissure 8, which was explosive during Kilauea’s last eruption, has been spotted fuming over the last few days.

The report has not mentioned the composition of the fumes, but lava activity from within the fissures is likely what caused it.

The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has been erupting almost continuously for the last 35 years. But that streak may be coming to an end.

A lead scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory told CNN in an exclusive interview that the volcano hasn't produced lava in three months. It had one of its bigger eruptions in May of this year, forcing evacuations and covering 14 miles of the Big Island in lava.

The USGS scientist told CNN the recent pause could be caused by a number of things, including a lack of magma from this year's eruption or, simply, that there just isn't enough pressure to push what magma there is to the surface.

This pause may mark the end of Kilauea's current erupting activity. That just means that when it does erupt again, it will mark a new eruptive event. And scientists don't know how, when or where exactly it could happen.

In a post on the USGS website, one scientist listed the many things a new eruptive event could bring — explosive eruptions, a new lava lake or even a decreased supply of magma so the "quiet" continues for years.

But nothing is certain, and the Kilauea volcano could just continue eruptions like the one earlier this year.

End Of An Era At Pu’u O’o

One of the most frequent questions asked of USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists the last several months has been, “Is the Lower East Rift eruption over?” But the same question could – and should – be asked of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption.

On January 3rd, 2018, we marked the 35th anniversary of Puʻu ʻŌʻō. For the past three and a half decades, lava has erupted almost continuously from the middle East Rift Zone (ERZ). Minor pauses in surface activity mostly occurred between the fountaining episodes in 1983 – 1986, and subsequently during a few episodes marked by subsidiary fissures, intrusions, or partial crater floor collapses.

Given the longevity of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption, we’d grown accustomed to the luxury of having nearly-uninterrupted access to lava. The lure of reliable lava viewing beckoned to millions of tourists around the globe. But, I say “nearly-uninterrupted” because there have been over one hundred brief pauses in surface activity throughout the 35-year-long event, most lasting hours to a couple days. The six longest pauses during the Puʻu ʻŌʻō activity were each 1 to 2-months-long, and all occurred between fountaining episodes in the first two years.

Specifically, long pauses between fountains occurred spanning episodes 3 and 4 (65 days), episodes 32 and 33 (52 days), episodes 12 and 13 (50 days), episodes 39 and 40 (49 days), episodes 25 and 26 (43 days), and episodes 31 and 32 (38 days).

After the fountaining episodes, there were several Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption pauses lasting between one week and one month.

Specifically, there was a 10 day pause in February of 1992 after the Kupaianaha vent shut down, ending episodes 48. A year later there was an eight day pause in February of 1993 after an uprift intrusion cause Puʻu ʻŌʻō’s crater floor to collapse. A nine day pause in February of 1996 occurred after an observed surge in effusion rate.

The longest eruption hiatus after the fountaining phase lasted 24 days following the episode 54 fissure in Nāpau Crater in February of 1997. In September 1999, there was an 11-day pause during episode 55 after a partial collapse of the Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater floor.

Most recently, there were two pauses in 2011: an 18-day-long pause after the March Kamoamoa fissure, and a six day long pause after the episode 60 west flank break out in August.

However, on April 30th, 2018 – everything changed. The catastrophic collapse of Puʻu ʻŌʻō has left the iconic eruption site and surrounding lava flow fields devoid of lava through the rest of 2018. December 30th marked the seven month anniversary of no surface activity at Puʻu ʻŌʻō and is effectively a concluding milestone for this long-lived event.

As a refresher from our previous article, the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program (GVP) classifies the end of continuous volcanic activity based on an absence of eruptive activity over a 90 day (three month) period.

Statistically, after a 210 day (7 month) gap in activity, it is extremely unlikely that lava will resume activity within Puʻu ʻŌʻō. Based on historical knowledge of rift zone eruptions, pauses lasting more than 3½ months have ended their respective eruption.

Given the GVP criterion, no signs of imminent unrest, and that December 30th, 2018 marks 7 months of no lava, then the Puʻu ʻŌʻō eruption could be considered over. The 36th anniversary of continuous eruption, on January 3, 2019, will not come to pass.

This does not mean Kīlauea Volcano is dead. New eruptions have previously begun elsewhere on Kīlauea after months to decades of quiet. Magma is being supplied to the volcano, and deformation data shows evidence for movement of molten rock through the magmatic system, refilling the middle ERZ. It’s important to note that Kīlauea is still an active volcano that will erupt in the future, and associated hazards have not changed. When a new eruption does occur, ground cracking, gas emissions, seismicity, and deformation can increase rapidly.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continues to closely monitor Kīlauea Volcano through ground-based observations, helicopter overflights, and geophysical instrument networks. Significant changes will be noted in HVO’s weekly updates

Kilauea volcano erupts in Hawaii - alert level raised

Jan 5 (Reuters) - The Kilauea  volcano in Hawaii began erupting on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Service's volcanic activity notice said, after detecting a glow in the summit producing smog that is confined within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The  volcano alert level was raised to 'Red' after an evaluation of the eruption and associated hazards, the notice said.

USGS said the volcanic gas, which consists of sulphur dioxide and other gases, could produce a visible haze of volcanic smog, known as 'vog', which has been observed in the downwind of Kilauea.

Vog has the potential to generate airborne health hazards for residents and visitors, causing breathing difficulties and also damaging agricultural crops.

Known to be the younger and more active neighbor of Mauna Loa, which erupted in November for the first time since 1984, the Kilauea volcano has been erupting since 2021.

However, Mauna Loa's eruption has had no impact and remains quiet, USGS said.

HVO officials said small flurries of earthquakes are occurring irregularly but have increased over the past week. More than 100 earthquakes were recorded on Saturday, including a magnitude-3.7 event that was felt in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and surrounding communities.

Most of these earthquakes have been smaller than magnitude-2 and not reported felt.

HVO officials said rates of ground movement are also elevated at the summit, and overall inflation is higher than conditions preceding the Jan. 5 summit eruption.

"An eruption at Kilauea's summit does not appear to be imminent, although heightened unrest suggests that an eruption at Kilaueaʻs summit might be possible with little or no warning," the report said.

No active lava has been observed at Kilauea since March 7.

Increased earthquake activity and signs of magma movement beneath Kīlauea’s summit, detected on January 31, 2024, have prompted the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to elevate the volcano’s alert level from ADVISORY/YELLOW to WATCH/ORANGE. With over 500 earthquakes recorded since midnight and ground deformation indicating pressurized magma chambers, the risk of an eruption remains high.

In the early morning hours (HST, GMT+10) of January 31, 2024, Kīlauea Volcano exhibited increased seismic activity and inflationary ground deformation, signaling the movement of magma in the subsurface. This prompted the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) to raise the volcano’s Alert Level and Aviation Color Code from ADVISORY/YELLOW to WATCH/ORANGE, indicating a heightened possibility of eruption.

The HVO’s latest update, published at 03:55 UTC on February 1, reports that activity beneath Kīlauea’s summit remains “heightened and dynamic.” The increase in seismicity and deformation, initially observed in the south caldera region, has fluctuated throughout the day but continues to signal a pressurized volcanic system. The seismic events, varying between 25 – 40 earthquakes per hour at depths of 1.5 – 3 km (approximately 1 – 2 miles), have formed clusters that migrated across the summit area, indicating shifting magma beneath the surface.

Since January 31, over 500 earthquakes have been located in this region, with magnitudes ranging up to 3.4, contributing to more than 1 400 earthquakes detected since January 27. Despite the increased seismicity, no events have caused damage, though several were felt by nearby communities and triggered rockfalls within the Halemaʻumaʻu crater.

Ground deformation measurements, particularly from tiltmeters at Sand Hill and Uēkahuna bluff, have shown variable directions and rates of tilt, typical of underground movements that could precede an eruption. Approximately 20 microradians of tilt change have been recorded, with step-wise changes often triggered by the seismic activity shaking the instruments.

Current patterns of deformation and seismicity suggest ongoing magma movement beneath the surface, extending from the region south of Halemaʻumaʻu to the area southwest of Kīlauea’s caldera. While activity remains concentrated in the summit region, with no unusual activity detected in the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone, the HVO warns that periods of increased earthquake activity and deformation rates are likely to continue.

Wind conditions, currently weak and from the south, could carry volcanic gases into areas of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and surrounding communities if an eruption occurs.

The HVO is closely monitoring the situation, including seismic activity, ground deformation, gas emissions, and webcam imagery, to detect any signs that might precede an eruption, such as accelerated seismic rates or changes in earthquake depths.

Officials at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park are working in tandem with HVO staff to ensure public safety, staying vigilant for any signs of a new lava outbreak or dike propagation that could indicate an imminent eruption.

Kīlauea, located on the eastern flank of the massive Mauna Loa shield volcano on the island of Hawaii, has a rich history recorded in Polynesian legends and documented eruptions since 1820. These eruptions include frequent summit and flank lava flows, interspersed with periods of long-term lava lake activity at the Halemaumau crater within the summit caldera, up until 1924.

The caldera, which measures approximately 3 x 5 km (about 1.86 x 3.11 miles), was formed in several stages around 1 500 years ago and again during the 18th century. Eruptions have also originated from the extensive East and Southwest rift zones, which stretch to the ocean in both directions.

Around 90% of the volcano’s surface is comprised of lava flows that are less than approximately 1 100 years old, with 70% of its surface being younger than 600 years.

A prolonged eruption from the East rift zone, spanning from 1983 to 2018, produced lava flows that covered more than 100 km� (about 38.6 square miles), destroyed hundreds of homes, and contributed to the formation of new coastline. Kīlauea is located within the Hawaiian Islands, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
