However, as Amazon's sales have skyrocketed so too have its shipping costs. Those expenses reached $16.2 billion last year, a 40% increase from the year before and accounted for nearly all of the company's $17.6 billion in fulfillment expenses, its biggest line item after cost of sales, or what Amazon pays for the goods it sells. During the same time, net shipping costs, which subtract revenue from shipping fees along with a portion of Prime membership fees, surged 43% to $7.2 billion, outpacing overall e-commerce sales growth of 24.9% last year. That was the fastest growth in net shipping costs since 2011.

quote:It is nothing less than the most devastating, contemporaneous takedown of a sitting president in modern history.
The James Comey storm, brewing menacingly on the horizon for months, slammed into the White House just after 5 p.m. ET on Thursday, as the first leaks of the fired FBI director's explosive new book started gushing out.
Proving that revenge is a dish best served cold, Comey waited 11 months to exact his retribution for his dismissal by President Donald Trump last May. When it came it was unsparing, richly detailed and mortifying for the President.
He painted Trump as a relentless liar who is obsessively unethical, devoid of humanity and a slave to his ego, who is clueless about his job and unconcerned about a Russian assault on American democracy.
Jabbing the President in a strikingly personal way, Comey noted the size of Trump's hands, said his skin looked orange and described white rings around his eyes from tanning goggles.
But Comey isn't just out to hurt Trump's feelings. He is on a more profound mission: His book is a parable about the threat from a brazen President who demands a warped concept of loyalty and has only disdain for the rule of law.
"Hell hath no fury like an FBI director scorned," former Trump economic adviser Stephen Moore said on CNN.
CNN obtained a copy of the book and corroborated news reports about Comey's highly anticipated recounting of his time in the Trump administration.
In one staggering part of the book, "A Higher Loyalty," Comey said dealing with Trump reminded him of his days prosecuting Mafia kingpins with their "silent circle of assent."
"The boss in complete control. The loyalty oaths. The us-versus-them worldview. The lying about all things, large and small, in service to some code of loyalty that put the organization above morality and above the truth."
"What is happening now is not normal. ... It is not fake news. It is not okay," he writes, sketching a brutal, feudal world that seems incompatible with traditional perceptions of the presidency.
All presidents are vulnerable to tell-alls by disgruntled former insiders that expose the enmities, gaffes and scandals of their West Wings. Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton all experienced indictments by disillusioned staffers.
Yet no commander in chief in modern memory has had to endure the humiliation heaped on Trump by Comey, who argues that the President saw the FBI as a personal investigative service bound to do his bidding.
How will Trump react?
The most immediate question now is how Trump, who typically rages over attacks on his image and lives a creed of swift retaliation, will respond to the former FBI director's portrayal of his "forest fire" of a presidency.
Besieged by scandals, fast-worsening legal entanglements and wrestling with a life and death decision on whether to launch military action in Syria, Trump is humiliated and under indescribable political pressure that may not be conducive to wise decision-making and seems sure to boil over on Twitter.
In a tsunami of bad news for the President just on Thursday, it was reported that the National Enquirer's parent company had paid off a doorman at one of his properties to keep quiet about a rumor that the President had sired an illegitimate child.
CNN has confirmed neither the story nor the rumor, but if true it would fit into a pattern of payoffs to people alleging transgressions in Trump's private life.
In yet another stunner, sources familiar with the matter said recordings that Trump attorney Michael Cohen often made of his telephone conversations likely have been scooped up in the FBI raid Monday on the attorney's apartment, office and hotel room.
CNN's Jim Acosta reported Thursday that the President had only just begun to cool off after the raid, which partly resulted from a referral to New York prosecutors from special counsel Robert Mueller.
But wall-to-wall news coverage of the leaks was likely to send Trump up the wall all over again, since there are few people he disdains more than Comey.
In an NBC interview last May, Trump blasted the former FBI chief as a "showboat" and a "grandstander." As recently as Monday, the President called Comey a liar and said he had been right to sack him. Trump has made no secret of his view of Comey as the epitome of a "deep state" effort to destroy him.
Like the furor over the book "Fire and Fury" by author Michael Wolf, published in January, this Trump headache will not fade soon.
Thursday's revelations were just the start of a week of pain for Trump, as Comey is about to embark on a media blitz, starting with an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "20/20" on Sunday. CNN's Jake Tapper will sit down with the former FBI director next Thursday.
It's not clear even that the Republican National Committee's plan to unleash a counterattack on "Lyin' Comey," exclusively revealed by CNN's Jeff Zeleny on Thursday, will be sufficient to rebut the hard-charging claims in the book.
Still Comey's willingness to write about salacious details of the Steele dossier, including the notorious claim that Trump watched prostitutes urinate in a Moscow hotel room -- accounts that have not been verified -- could bolster GOP arguments that he is going tabloid just to sell books.
Book to have a long half life
The book is sure to have long-term political and legal consequences.
Its publication on Tuesday is certain to thicken the intrigue over Russian election meddling, and the President's apparent lack of interest in making the Kremlin pay a price.
In the book, Comey recalls being struck that neither Trump nor his advisers asked top intelligence officials at a meeting in Trump Tower "about what the future Russian threat might be. Nor did they ask how the United States might prepare itself to meet that threat." Instead, the book says, they focused on "how they could spin what we'd just told them."
Potentially, Comey's assault could play into Trump's thinking as he mulls whether to seek to dismiss Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, perhaps as a precursor to shutting down Mueller himself.
It will certainly offer fodder for Democrats, who will argue in the midterm elections that Trump lacks the morals, intellect or temperament to be President. But there's little chance it will loosen Trump's unshakeable hold on his political support base, which tends to view such media storms as more proof that the establishment is biased against Trump.
Material in the book suggests, however, that Comey, who has already spoken to Mueller's investigators, will be a crucial witness as the special counsel considers whether the President obstructed justice.
In the book, Comey repeats his claim that Trump asked if he could go easy on former national security adviser Michael Flynn, which he revealed in congressional testimony last year. But he stops short of outlining an obstruction case against Trump:
"I have one perspective on the behavior I saw, which while disturbing and violating basic norms of ethical leadership, may fall short of being illegal."
Excerpts from the book also reflect just how deeply Comey's tenure resulted in the FBI being dragged into the center of America's poisonous politics, a process likely to be exacerbated by days of controversy over his book.
Those who find Comey a flawed messenger with a healthy sense of ego and a holier-than-thou belief in his own propriety may also find ammunition for their views in the book.
In one section, he criticizes Obama administration Attorney General Loretta Lynch as having a "tortured, half-out, half-in approach" to the Clinton email investigation, for which he was excoriated by Democrats.
Comey also writes that he was told by Barack Obama after the election that nothing that had happened had caused the then-President to question his integrity.
"Boy, were those words I needed to hear," he writes. "I felt a wave of emotion, almost to the verge of tears."
He wrote that he then told Obama, "I'm just trying to do the right thing."
Comey said Trump expressed a concern that there was even a 1 percent chance that his wife believed the allegation of what had gone on inside the Moscow hotel room in 2013.
“I remember thinking, how could your wife think there's a 1 percent chance you were with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow,” Comey said. “I'm a flawed human being there’s but literally zero chance that my wife would think that was true. So what kind of marriage to what kind of man does your wife think there's only a 99 percent chance you didn't do that.”

quote:Candidate Trump repeatedly praised Comey for his decision to make a public announcement about the investigation. He commended the director for having the “guts” to act as he had and said he had “brought back his reputation” with that single announcement. Shortly after being sworn in, Trump singled out Comey at a White House ceremony and showered him with more praise.
After Comey wrote his Oct. 28 letter to Congress announcing the reopening of the investigation, Sessions joined in the acclaim, at least twice publicly defending the director. In a late October interview on the Fox Business network, Sessions said Comey “had an absolute duty … to come forward with the new information.” Just before the election, he said on Fox News Channel that Comey “did the right thing … He had no choice.”

quote:In one of the juicier scenes, Comey takes readers inside his "loyalty dinner" with Trump, in the White House residence on Jan. 27, 2017, a week after the inauguration:
• "He said lots of people wanted to be director of the FBI, but that he
thought very highly of me. He said he had heard great things about me
and knew the people of the FBI thought very highly of me as well."
• "He said despite that, he would understand if I wanted to 'walk away'
given all I had been through, although then he noted that that would
be bad for me personally because it would look like I had done
something wrong."
• "He finished by saying that he knew he could 'make a change at FBI' if he wanted to, but that he wanted to know what I thought."
• "Now it was pretty clear to me what was happening. The setup of the
dinner, both the physical layout of a private meal and Trump’s
pretense that he had not already asked me to stay on multiple
occasions, convinced me this was an effort to establish a patronage
relationship."
• "Somebody probably had told him, or maybe it just occurred to him at random, that he’d 'given' me the job for 'free' and that he needed to get something in return."
• "This only added to the strangeness of the experience. The president of the United States had invited me to dinner and decided my job security was on the menu."
quote:President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, is trying to prevent the government from using materials the FBI seized in a search of his office and residence this week.
A federal prosecutor's office said a hearing has been scheduled before U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood for Friday morning to address a temporary restraining order related to the judicial warrant that authorized the search.
Federal agents raided Cohen's Manhattan office, home and hotel room Monday, seizing records on a variety of subjects, including payments that were made in 2016 to women who might have damaging information about Trump.
FBI and Justice Department officials in Washington and New York have refused to discuss the case publicly or say what crimes they are investigating, but people familiar with the investigation have told The Associated Press the search warrant used in the raids sought bank records, business records on Cohen's dealing in the taxi industry, Cohen's communications with the Trump campaign and information on payments made to a former Playboy model and a porn actress who say they had affairs with Trump.
Those people spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the confidential details.
It was unclear how much prosecutors might have to reveal about the investigation in open court in the hearing scheduled for Friday.
Cohen has denied wrongdoing. Cohen's lawyer, Stephen Ryan, declined to comment to The Associated Press on Friday morning.
Trump has called the raids a "witch hunt," ''an attack on our country," and a violation of rules that ordinarily make attorney client communications confidential.
Those confidentiality rules can be set aside under certain circumstances if investigators have evidence that a crime has been committed.
Public corruption prosecutors in the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan are trying to determine, according to one person familiar with the investigation, if there was any fraud related to payments to Karen McDougal, a former Playmate, and Stephanie Clifford, who performs under the name Stormy Daniels.
McDougal was paid $150,000 in the summer of 2016 by the parent company of the National Enquirer under an agreement that gave it the exclusive rights to her story, which it never published. Cohen said he paid Daniels $130,000 in exchange for her silence about her claim to have had a one-night-stand with Trump.
The White House has consistently said Trump denies either affair.
As trade tensions with China escalate, President Trump has found new appeal in a regional trade pact he once called a “rape of our country.”
The pact’s members — including some of America’s most stalwart allies — might not make it so easy to come back.
Officials in Japan, Australia and New Zealand reacted coolly on Friday to Mr. Trump’s remarks that he would be interested in joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership after rejecting it so publicly just a year ago. While the United States would significantly bolster the pact if it signed up, its entry would require intense negotiations — and current members will expect significant concessions from the American side.
Comparing the multicountry trade agreement to “a glasswork,” Yoshihide Suga, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, cautioned against any efforts to change it to accommodate Mr. Trump.
“It’s difficult to bring part of the pact and renegotiate it,” he said, calling it a “well-balanced pact” that carefully addressed the needs of the current 11 member nations.
“We’ve got a deal” already, said Steven Ciobo, Australia’s trade minister, who added, “I can’t see that all being thrown open to appease the United States.”
An early test of the potential for the United States to rejoin could come as soon as next week, when Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister and an ardent champion of the pact, is to meet with Mr. Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.SPOILEROm spoilers te kunnen lezen moet je zijn ingelogd. Mr. Trump faces a growing domestic backlash from corporations, farmers and others over fears that he is igniting a trade war with China, the United States’ largest single trading partner. Mr. Trump has warned that he could levy tariffs on $150 billion in Chinese goods, prompting Beijing to threaten retaliatory measures aimed at American soybeans, airplanes and other products.
Negotiating a new pact could take years. Still, rekindling negotiations could make it hard for China to play off the United States against its allies by promising to shift business from one to another if a trade war breaks out. It could be a way to assuage American farmers and businesses hurt by Chinese tariffs by assuring robust markets for American products in countries that signed onto the deal, like Japan, Australia and South Korea. It would give the pact a great deal more heft and help position it as an economic counterweight to China, which increasingly dominates the Asia-Pacific region.
More broadly, it signals to the region that the United States is not giving up on trade, despite Mr. Trump’s sometimes harsh words. Even as officials in other countries expressed skepticism on Friday, they said they would like to hear what Washington has to offer. “Japan would like to listen to the U.S.’s view,” said Mr. Suga, the Japanese official.
The barriers to a new pact are considerable. Many current members of the pact feel they already gave considerable ground to the United States to strike the original deal, particularly in sensitive areas like protections for pharmaceutical companies.
For its part, the Trump administration worries that the partnership will become a zero-tariff backdoor for Chinese goods into the American market. It worries that companies that have moved much of their supply chains to China could make components there, ship them to a member of the T.P.P. for assembly, then sell them in the United States tariff-free. It wants to toughen requirements for how much of the product is made within the T.P.P. country, which could make the goods less competitive.
Their worries focus largely on Vietnam, a member of the current version of the T.P.P. It has a large population, and a few big American companies, like Intel, have already invested heavily in setting up factories there that make products practically from scratch. But many other companies that are exporting goods from Vietnam rely heavily on imports from China. Vietnam’s huge garment industry, for example, relies greatly on fabric and accessories imported from China, according to garment manufacturing executives.
Vietnamese officials did not respond to requests for comment on Friday. Frederick Burke, managing partner for Vietnam at the American law firm Baker McKenzie, said that the Vietnamese government is “very aware of and focused on the issue of circumvention” in trade.
Renegotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, may not be quick. Mr. Trump’s trade negotiators already have their hands full this spring trying to complete changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement. They need to decide whether to extend temporary exemptions from the president’s new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. Above all, they are locked in a series of increasingly acrimonious trade spats with China.
China is making its own outreach efforts in the meantime. Wang Yi, its foreign minister, will travel to Tokyo on Sunday. China has played up free trade talks with Japan and with South Korea, which is not a member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.Sheila A. Smith, a Japan expert at the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, said the Trump administration may have realized that it does not have the leverage it thought to renegotiate a new trade deal with Japan, and that embracing the regional pact may be the best fallback.twitter:realDonaldTrump twitterde op vrijdag 13-04-2018 om 05:15:16 Would only join TPP if the deal were substantially better than the deal offered to Pres. Obama. We already have BILATERAL deals with six of the eleven nations in TPP, and are working to make a deal with the biggest of those nations, Japan, who has hit us hard on trade for years! reageer retweet
The Trump administration “could walk right back in with the exact same deal from last year that they walked out of, and claim victory,” said Ms. Smith, who noted that the government of Mr. Abe “has been continuously and quietly encouraging the U.S. administration to take another look” at the pact.
One lingering question would be how China would react. The pact’s rules were designed in part to challenge China by encouraging members to loosen state support of their economies and relax trade rules — steps Beijing would have to take if it hoped to someday join the pact and enjoy its lower trade barriers.
China is not likely to be troubled by a United States move to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership as long as the Trump administration is doing so for strictly trade reasons, said He Weiwen, a former Commerce Ministry official and trade specialist who is now a senior fellow at the influential Center for China and Globalization in Beijing.
But the Chinese government is likely to be dismayed if the United States is reconsidering it as part of any revival of the Obama administration’s geopolitical pivot to Asia, or as part of any attempt to isolate China, Mr. He cautioned.
“That’s what we should be careful about,” he said.
Some current members of the pact greeted Mr. Trump’s comments on Thursday warmly. A spokeswoman for Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry said it welcomed the American interest. “The TPP was designed to be an inclusive agreement, which is open to like-minded countries willing and able to meet its high standards,” the spokeswoman said.
Still, even American allies suggest a long road ahead if Mr. Trump moves forward.
“If the United States genuinely did wish to re-enter, that would trigger another process of engagement and negotiation,” Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, said on television, adding that she still planned to go forward with the deal as-is. “It’s not just a matter of slotting into an existing deal.”

Even kijken hoe dit uitpakt.

That President Donald Trump has been running his own parallel communications shop inside the White House probably won't come as much of a surprise. A source told CBS News on Thursday that Mr. Trump called on Wednesday and asked the source to go on television -- to call for Mr. Trump to fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
Meanwhile, on Thursday afternoon, the president tweeted a message that took a more subdued tone than that of his cable news spinning allies: "I have agreed with the historically cooperative, disciplined approach that we have engaged in with Robert Mueller (Unlike the Clintons!). I have full confidence in Ty Cobb, my Special Counsel, and have been fully advised throughout each phase of this process."
The president has been known to spend what's marked on his schedule as his "executive time" watching Fox News, tweeting, and calling friends and outsiders for advice, independent of his White House communications team — and often against the advice of senior White House advisers.
Axios reported earlier in March that White House chief of staff John Kelly told reporters in an off the record briefing that Mr. Trump was likely leaking internal personnel drama to people outside of the White House, who in turn leak to reporters.
Earlier this week, after the homes and office of his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, were raided by the Justice Department, the president went on a tear to reporters during a meeting with senior military leadership, calling the situation "a total witch hunt," "a disgrace," and "an attack on our country."
When asked why he hadn't yet fired Mueller, the president responded that he'd "see what happens."

President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer negotiated a deal in late 2017 to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model who said she was impregnated by a top Republican fundraiser, according to people familiar with the matter.
Michael Cohen, whose office, home and hotel room were raided by federal agents this week, arranged the payments to the woman on behalf of Elliott Broidy, a deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee with ties to Mr. Trump, the people familiar with the matter said. Mr. Broidy, a Los Angeles-based venture capitalist, works on the Republican committee with Mr. Cohen, who is also a national deputy finance chairman.
The deal, which hasn’t previously been reported, prohibits the Los Angeles woman from disclosing her alleged relationship with Mr. Broidy in exchange for $1.6 million to be paid to her over two years in quarterly installments, these people said. The first payment was due Dec. 1, according to one of the people.
“I acknowledge I had a consensual relationship with a Playboy Playmate,” Mr. Broidy said in a statement provided by a spokesman. “At the end of our relationship, this woman shared with me that she was pregnant. She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this difficult period.”

Mr. Cohen didn’t respond to requests for comment. A spokesman for the woman’s lawyer, Keith Davidson, said he couldn’t confirm or deny the existence of the agreement.SPOILEROm spoilers te kunnen lezen moet je zijn ingelogd. In 2015, Trump listed 19 companies that were paying him to produce or distribute Trump-branded consumer goods.
In recent weeks, only two said they are still selling Trump-branded goods. One is a Panamanian company selling Trump bed linens and home goods. The other is a Turkish company selling Trump furniture.
Of the rest, some Trump partners quit in reaction to campaign-trail rhetoric on immigrants and Muslims. Others said their licensing agreements had expired. Others said nothing beyond confirming that they’d stopped working with Trump. Their last Trump goods are now being sold off, often at a discount: One cologne is marked down from $42 to $9.99 for an ounce.
