She was one of two women performing that night, the other being superstar Amy Schumer. I really wanted to like Bridget, because I like supporting female comics in general, but it seems her act was not so much comedy as a musical sexual assault.
If you haven't seen Bridget's act, here's a quick overview (of what in my opinion is a painfully long 15 minutes): Bridget is a classically trained vocalist who sings rock ballads about her reproductive organs. It wasn't all that funny to me--I'm more into cultural criticism a la Aziz and Amy--but it wasn't offensive either. She goes on to flash her boobs. This seemed a bit off but also not quite at the level of sex crime in my opinion (though legally it is a sex crime).
And then things escalate. Bridget goes into the crowd and continues to belt out her songs, while rubbing her breasts in the faces of male audience members. She stands on top of them so their heads are under her dress. She sits on them and strokes them. I would be able to tell you more, but I turned away at this point.
I was horrified and the people in my immediate vicinity seemed to be horrified as well. It was clear that all of Bridget's "comedy" would qualify as sexual assault. And yet this woman had been hired to perform on the same stage as Aziz Ansari and Amy Schumer, two people who through comedy are brilliantly taking down rape culture, racism, sexism and a host of other social issues.
If a male comic whipped out his penis, or rubbed his groin against a female audience member, people would be outraged. Why isn't the reverse true? I searched the internet and all I could find was praise of Bridget's ability to "reclaim her sexuality." Worse, she is a survivor of sexual assault (per her bio) who is now committing it regularly for "comedy." As a survivor myself, I really don't know how she can overcome that cognitive dissonance. It's almost some perverse role play reenacting the past.
I decided to post this thought to Reddit because no one seems to be talking about the problems with Bridget's act. Is there someone behind the scenes arranging consent agreements with the audience or is she really just assaulting men under a flood of stage lights?
