Democrats are holding Hillary Clinton’s gains in the suburbs while clawing back her rural losses.

And that’s the basic bind that Donald Trump has put the GOP in. Nothing he has said or done since taking office has put to rest any of the doubts that pushed people away from him had — he still seems impulsive, disrespectful, and extremely casual about the line between his personal finances and the public’s business. But at least some people were convinced to vote for him because he seemed “different” from earlier Republicans on important policy grounds. As president, he’s shown no sign of that heterodox campaign persona, driving Trump-curious Democrats back to the fold.
(...)
Obviously, there’s no guarantee that these patterns will hold up in the midterms. But what we’re seeing so far is a recipe for a strong Democratic wave that’s based fundamentally on a rejection of some of the big dichotomies that rapidly arose in November 2016 — Democrats are showing a real ability to win back a healthy slice of the white working-class voters who swung to Trump without ceding the educated suburban professionals whom he repulsed back to the GOP.
And at the moment, Republicans appear to have no answer to this. They are neither distancing themselves from Trump and his erratic persona nor embracing the occasionally moderate economic policy ideas he ran on two years ago. And no number of electoral losses seems able to deter them from this course.

quote:As the final weeks of the 2016 elections ticked down, voters in swing states like Nevada and North Carolina began seeing eerie promotional travel ads as they scrolled through their Facebook feeds or clicked through Google sites.
In one, a woman with a French accent cheerfully welcomes visitors to the “Islamic State of France,” where “under Sharia law, you can enjoy everything the Islamic State of France has to offer, as long as you follow the rules.”
The video has a Man in the High Tower feel. Iconic French tourist sites are both familiar and transformed — the Eiffel Tower is capped with a star and crescent and the spires of the Notre Dame are replaced with the domed qubba of a mosque.
The Mona Lisa is shown looking, the ad says, “as a woman should,” covered in a burka.
If it wasn’t already clear that the ad was meant to stoke viewers’ fears of imminent Muslim conquest, the video is interspersed with violent imagery. Three missiles are seen flying through the sky as the video opens. Blindfolded men are shown kneeling with guns pointed at their heads, and children are shown training with weapons “to defend the caliphate.”
This is one of three mock travel ads.SPOILEROm spoilers te kunnen lezen moet je zijn ingelogd. Je moet je daarvoor eerst gratis Registreren. quote:The lawyer for film actress Stormy Daniels claimed Wednesday that CBS left a clip of his client describing President Trump's genitalia out of her "60 Minutes" interview last month because "they’re a conservative network."
Daniels's attorney, Michael Avenatti, made the remarks about his client's alleged 2006 affair with Trump in an appearance on "Megyn Kelly Today."
“So you say there’s more to her story than what we’ve already heard, like what?” Kelly said.
“When she sat for that interview, it actually lasted over two hours in length, the actual interview," Avenatti said. "And then the portion that the American public saw was only 14 or 16 minutes of actual interview time on ‘60 Minutes.’”
"But had it been newsworthy, ‘60 Minutes’ would have put it on the air," Kelly said.
“Well, ‘60 Minutes’ and CBS, you know, they’re a conservative network," Avenatti replied. "There’s a lot of information that was said during that interview that did not make it into the final ‘60 Minutes.’”
“Conservative, like highbrow, you mean, you don’t mean politically conservative?” Kelly asked.
“No. I mean that they play it close to the vest," Avenatti said. "For instance, she can describe the president’s genitalia in great detail. That did not make it."
“We don’t need to hear that," Kelly said as she covered her eyes. “My eyes! Don’t need to hear that."
"That did not make it in," Avenatti said.
"And good for them," Kelly responded.
The description Avenatti is referring to did not air on the broadcast version, but some of what he alluded to in the interview with Kelly was not cut from the online version.
The "60 Minutes" interview delivered more than 22 million viewers for CBS, the highest rating for the program in almost a decade.
Earlier this week, David Schwartz, the attorney for Trump attorney Michael Cohen, said Avenatti has excelled at keeping his client in the news via a barrage of broadcast interviews on a daily basis. Schwartz added that the alleged affair itself is entirely "nonsensical."
"I give [Avenatti] credit for one thing ... he's made the best out of this story. This guy is a PR machine. And he's only in it for himself," Schwartz told radio host John Catsimatidis on AM 970 in New York

quote:President Donald Trump floated replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions with Scott Pruitt as recently as this week, even as the scandal-ridden head of the Environmental Protection Agency has faced a growing list of negative headlines, according to people close to the President.
"He was 100% still trying to protect Pruitt because Pruitt is his fill-in for Sessions," one source familiar with Trump's thinking told CNN.
Though the President has, at times, floated several people a day for multiple positions in his administration that are already occupied, the proposition reveals just how frustrated Trump remains with Sessions because of his decision to recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation more than a year ago, while signaling how confident he has remained in Pruitt despite a dizzying number of ethics issues.
