Josef Leberer: Kimi Räikkönen "just does what he wants"
http://www.motorsport-tot(...)r-will-16030401.htmlJosef, can you still remember your first encounter with the young Kimi Räikkönen?
This must have been in Mugello or Fiorano if my memory serves me right. He was a blond youngling from the North, in his nature very quiet.
He probably didn’t talk much already back then..
Not at all. He was a very quiet guy, especially outside the car. Most young drivers are accompanied at the first test by a few people who support them, but Kimi came alone. Well then we test Formula 1, was his attitude.
The engineers always plan a certain program for such tests, Kimi could fulfill that very fast. They gave him then also very quickly a few tasks and listened to him because his feedback was precise and he had an immensely good feeling for the car and for changes. He also asked the right questions. This is a first indication that someone is a very good driver.
And that after just 23 races he had done before.
Absolutely, that is remarkable. Many have said, after 23 races in a Formula car, that is virtually impossible. One can compare it a bit as if a footballer goes directly from the 6thdivision to Bundesliga. These are jumps that you normally can’t do. The requirements are completely different there.
Kimi got his FIA super license only because of an exception which didn’t proceed without criticism.
The criticism of many experts was big. A lot have expressed safety concerns because in their point of view, Kimi could never be so far. Early December he was to complete the super license test, 300 kilometers under the supervision of the FIA. He then got the Super License but at first only for four races on probation. The situation, this pressure, it was not easy. With the first point in his first race he has managed to get many concerns out of the way."
How would you describe Kimi's preparation for the first race?
First you have to know: When it comes to stamina, body awareness, speed, coordination, capacity of reaction, apprehension and peace of mind, Kimi was back then already relatively good. But at the first test we could see already that in fast corners or during braking he was reaching his limits at distance. How could it be any different after a couple of 30-minute races he had driven up till then?
We had too little time so we had to take an extreme workout regime, almost a crash course. So for example, we built a simulator that was as close as possible to Formula 1 car in terms of loads.
Former McLaren team doctor Aki Hintsa once said about Kimi that his spatial perception is absolutely unique. Is that right?
Yes. No matter what he does he has an incredible body control. I have noticed immediately during mountain biking through the forest.
Was Kimi cooperative with the amount of exercises?
Actually yes. But on the fourth, fifth day, when we were planning a hike, he groaned: 'Josef, I think it's too much.' Then he didn’t speak with me anymore for a few hours. A little later we were up at the summit: 'Wow, it's beautiful here!'. And he wanted to know if you can go snowboarding as well as there. This has broken the ice and from then on we got along quite well.
Did you talk more then, also private matters?
After our long day on the mountain he has thawed. In the evening we were also swimming, afterwards we went to a small bar. I have praised him because it was a really tough day and then I said: 'I’m drinking a small beer now.'
Out of politeness I asked: 'Do you like one too?' The young athletes normally don't drink anything and I was convinced that he wouldn’t drink either but he only asked: 'Can I really?' Then we touched glasses. From then on we had an extremely good relationship.
And then you worked out even more?"
We started at 7:00 in the morning with at least 45 minutes swimming. At 8:30 we had breakfast. Afterwards we were with the mountain bike or on foot in the mountains. Sometimes we were up to the ankles in mud and sludge. Many others would have moaned and turned around.
When we arrived at the top we went down the slope on the snow on the stomach headlong! Totally crazy, but that's part of it. He enjoyed it. And then it was easy to motivate him. I have told him again and again: 'You have the chance to make history.'
Let’s do a jump to his first Formula 1 season...
With Kimi you could immediately see his coolness and his authenticity when he was in the car. Although Kimi wasn’t a fan of testing, he was an instinct racer like there are only very few. I have seen many drivers, that sit for hours in meetings with the engineers - but ultimately it just depends to deliver the performance at point X. And that Kimi was able.
Interesting at that time was also that Kimi was the main reason for the separation between Sauber and Red Bull, after all Red Bull was then majority owner of the team and wanted Enrique Bernoldi in the car. How do you remember this conflict?
Kimi was the decision of Peter Sauber. But Helmut Marko wanted his driver and Red Bull was our most important partner.
Sauber certainly didn’t take it easy but it is true, that this was one reason that the relationship parted. Sauber always appreciated Mateschitz but in the case he had the feeling that Marko wanted to take too much influence. If you look at what Bernoldi has made of his career, it was the right decision. And Kimi is cut from a different cloth. Kimi has scored a point in his first race but he wasn’t happy with it at all. This makes the difference.
At the second race there was a bizarre story, you have told me once...
Kimi was just incredibly cool and relaxed. I remember the story of the Grand Prix of Malaysia. Petronas was then our main sponsor, a very important race. It was his second race of the four races on probation, so an immense pressure. It is Sunday at noon before the race, he is lying on the massage table. And the guy is so cool that he just falls asleep!
I have let him sleep. At 13:05 the engineers are getting nervous and ask where he is so I wake him and tell him: 'By the way, you are going to drive soon the second Formula 1 race of your life. Get up!' He stretches and says: 'Ah, Josef, let me still sleep for a few minutes, please.' Inconceivably!
What else distinguishes him from other drivers, why is he a champion?
At 250 in a corner he is able to drive for several seconds wheel to wheel, centimeters next to someone else without making a mistake or getting nervous. He always keeps his cool and is a gentleman in a fight. He would also never play games. Kimi doesn’t care about all that.
You have already worked with Ayrton Senna, with Alain Prost, with Sebastian Vettel Where there are differences between them and Kimi and where are parallels?
It is difficult for me to answer that. Basically you can’t compare these types. What connects them is an emotional intelligence to know exactly what is good for them and what is not.
But Senna is Senna, Prost is Prost, Hakkinen is Hakkinen. Vettel and Kubica also them were real racers. They are egoists but if there is a gentlemen's agreement they are nevertheless the people you are able to rely on one hundred percent. They are as hard as bones on track but they make no nonsense.
For us journalists Kimi is not always easy. On one hand fans love him, on the other hand interviews with him are often quite taciturn.
Kimi just does what he wants. He has always remained true to himself and people sense that. Such an image you can’t build artificially, you have to live it. He really is like that. I think that’s also why he will take his place in history.
I know many journalists who are disappointed in him. Kimi is certainly not easy and he is often criticized because of it. Even from sponsors. But that is an issue for the teams that employ him. Kimi is a phenomenon. He is popular, although he doesn’t do anything for it. Others however, make an effort in terms of media but are still not so popular.
When were you last in contact with Kimi?
That was in the winter. And before that at the Russia Grand Prix we were talking only about our children. Very happy I was about his invitation to his private world championship party in 2007.
So there are still private connections?
Yes, we are writing text messages from time to time.
If you happen to meet him in 20 years in Tokyo at a crossing, you would probably go eat together, right?
Yes, that won’t likely change. Many underestimate Kimi humanly. But he has a very good feeling and a very good memory.
